I do not have tattoos so I look edgey. I have them because I want them.
They don't appeal to me because of the bad reaction, they appeal because in the hands of a good artist they are beautiful.

deepinthewoods · 20/05/2014 06:45

But they are there primarily for others to see though.

I have never seen a beautiful tattoo.

FindoGask · 20/05/2014 06:57

deepinthewoods - have you read the thread? If you really are genuinely interested in finding out why people have tattoos, there are a lot of reasons given here already.

deepinthewoods · 20/05/2014 07:01

Yes I have read the thread. I still don't get the need for people to cover their bodies with permanent graffitti.

FindoGask · 20/05/2014 07:05

ah, OK. So you're not really interested then - you're just wanting to say your piece. Which is fine, and all, but not really worth my time and energy.

Mckayz · 20/05/2014 07:05

No they are not for other people to see, they are because I want them. You obviously have never really looked at tattoos if you haven't seen a beautiful one. I've seen loads.

DownstairsMixUp · 20/05/2014 07:46

It's not your business to "get it" so that's fine. If you haven't seen beautiful tattoos, which is essentially just good art on someone's skin then you must just be very unfortunate. Also you clearly didn't RTFT as many have tattoos in areas that can't be seen or spend a good portion of time covered up. People get them because they like them, why is that hard to understand? I'm sure at the moment your sporting an outfit or a hairstyle that somebody out there thinks is vile and quite frankly as long as you like it, it's none of their business on why you choose to look that way.

livingzuid · 20/05/2014 08:13

I don't think general public opinion is against tattoos. I think most of the public don't care. Still, you get your Daily Mail types (who actually today published a surprisingly nice piece on the British girl who tattooed Rihanna) but fortunately most of the population has better things to do with their time then cluck over someone inking themselves.

2rebecca · 20/05/2014 08:31

I think one or two tattoos can look attractive. A body covered in them or different tattoos done at different times can just clash and look a mess. Some people don't know when to stop with tattoos and seem to get hooked on planning and having tattoos done as a sort of hobby. If its on your back and you can't actually see it why bother? You're not exactly doing it for yourself if you can't see it.
He's the main person who sees it so his opinion should be important to you.

FindoGask · 20/05/2014 08:52

"Some people don't know when to stop with tattoos and seem to get hooked on planning and having tattoos done as a sort of hobby."

lol! You say that like... like it's a bad thing.

Mckayz · 20/05/2014 09:06

Of course a tattoo on your back is for you! It's not going to be for anyone else.

livingzuid · 20/05/2014 09:37

If its on your back and you can't actually see it why bother? You're not exactly doing it for yourself if you can't see it.

ummm I had both mine done on my back when I was single. If it wasn't for me then who was it for? I'm not sure you've read the thread properly as there are many people explaining their motivations and which answers that question.

As for the 'hobby' comment Confused fair enough you don't think lots look good but I can assure you that it is much more than a hobby.

MultipleMama · 20/05/2014 09:39

We've heard it all before and our answers will continue to be the same! Grin.

There is nothing wrong with getting tattoos as a hobby as long as the person has at least thought about it. My favourite part of my "hobby" is designing it :)

Have you seen Zombie boy's tattoos? Despite being a little "OTT" the detail and design is exquisite and beautifully designed. I saw an old photo of him before he had an tattoos and he looks so much more attractive. I met him once, lovely man, quite smart too :)

I do not get tattoos for anyone but me, however, ask my DH and DC which they like better and if they'd like to see something included. My son wanted spiders so on my back there's a spinder dangling from a rib with a web :)

MultipleMama · 20/05/2014 09:41

he looks so much more attractive with tattoos - that's what I meant to say!

livingzuid · 20/05/2014 09:43

goosey my apologies I did not mean to make out that your life was terrible - not at all. I am sure you're perfectly happy! It is just I have been there trying to please everyone around me, fit in with different social circles and employers etc. It really was exhausting and I found it almost impossible. Worrying what others think of you all the time is really tough. I understand why you're questioning your DH's decision if it is so contrary to all you have both been building.

I honestly believe though that people in general are not that judgemental. Definitely they exist but then like attracts like. I have faith that most are genuinely nice individuals and since turning my back on the destructive lifestyle I had before, have found things so much easeir. So long as you are a good citizen and respectful to those around you, most people will not project a load of prejudice onto you, including tattooing.

deepinthewoods · 20/05/2014 09:45

"There is nothing wrong with getting tattoos as a hobby as long as the person has at least thought about it."

That's very judgemental. What about people who ink themselves willy nilly or with little thought? Are those people's rights not valid too?

As much as I dislike tattoos I support the right to have them done whether you have "at least thought about it" or not.

Are your tattoos more valid because you " at least thought about it"?

I didn't realised there was a heirarchy amongst tatooed people.

livingzuid · 20/05/2014 09:59

deepinthewoods of course there is no hierarchy. There are many cases of people who have gone to disreputable tattoo artists to have work done with very bad consequences. Done incorrectly it can range from looking completely crap to downright dangerous.

A woman here bought a Groupon to have a tattoo done and ended up with this. You can either google translate the article or the picture says it all.

www.ad.nl/ad/nl/1038/Rotterdam/article/detail/3297629/2012/08/07/Debora-27-wanhopig-na-mislukte-Groupon-tatoeage.dhtml

Which is why research is so important.

livingzuid · 20/05/2014 10:04

And this Wikipedia article outlines some of the dangers of going to a backroom parlour or not using proper equipment.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tattoo_medical_issues

People are putting themselves at serious risk if they don't check out what they want done and who is going to do it before embarking on a tattoo.

What about people who ink themselves willy nilly or with little thought? Are those people's rights not valid too?

It's always within their rights to do so. I think multiplemama would prefer that people didn't end up with Hepatitis, AIDS or some other horrendous condition before getting their tattoo done though.

MultipleMama · 20/05/2014 10:10

deep - Now you're just picking at things. That is not what I meant at all and you know it. And I'm sorry but people in glass houses... as they say.

What about people who ink themselves willy nilly or with little thought? Are those people's rights not valid too?

You just contradicted yourself; "little" so at least some thought gone into it. As for those who are willy nilly they choose a design so therefore they have thought about it.

And for the record, I wasn't being judgemental. I did not insult anyone nor did I hint I was. No one has a right to think they're better than someone else.

MultipleMama · 20/05/2014 11:16

The point I was trying to make, livingzuid, explained/linked it better.

And I know all about bad tattoos & backstreet palors, my BiL has to pay the price his whole life because of it. I'd rather people did their research before getting tattoos - even as a hobby, and even if their wasn't much tho

MultipleMama · 20/05/2014 11:17

Thought behind the tattoo itself*

Damn phone posted before I finished. I blame the kids jumping on me... Grin

RandomInternetStranger · 20/05/2014 18:51

My favourite tattoos are the ones where I've just walked in spur of the moment and done it, or where I've gone with someone else and got the bug while I've been there. Or when I've just walked in and asked the guy to freehand something there and then. The ones I planned the most carefully and thought about the longest are my least favourite. Grin

MultipleMama · 20/05/2014 18:56

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 20/05/2014 21:06

This is just going round in circles! Grin

So heres a pretty picture to distract you. My next two are being done in the next sort of month or so (two snakes on left wrist, cherry blossom on right arm)
But this will be the big one after that...

Not to my taste I'm afraid. badly drawn and the face has no character. I wouldn't want it on my wall and certainly not imprinted in my skin. Orange, red and yellow will fade quckly leaving behind the blues giving a crusty old sailor look in a few years time.
