Hello, welcome to thread five!! Smile

I'm Mouse and I'm 10 whole days sober which is bloody amazing given that I would normally consume nearly 90 units per week! And that's without 'special occasions'!! Shock

So, if I can do it, you can do it! The support here is awesome, no matter where you are in your quest to quit. No judging, no cliquey groups.

We are just real, honest people. All helping each other to give up the booze. Come meet the other Brave Babes........................

And for those who would like to read the adventures so far, here are the links from the first four threads!

Hi Trinity, I have read your thread but I am totally rubbish and not very experienced with that type of thing! I wish you all the best with it x

TrinityRhino · 17/08/2010 16:14

thanks moomin Smile

desiretochange · 17/08/2010 16:24

Not your fault Moonin, am way too prickly for my own good, need to work on my self-esteem:(

jesuswhatnext · 17/08/2010 16:25

trinity - sounds a lovley idea! i am a whizz at organising parties! (she says modestly!)

i think in the circs, provide the food, soft drinks (make up some non-alkie punch in a pretty jug and add ice and fruit) (you can hire glasses from most supermarkets) and some bubbly to toast neil with! (dosnet have to be expensive champagne, cava can be just as nice!)
invites - word of mouth is fine, just say that maybe guests could bring a bottle or a couple of fireworks (ime this works really well and you end up with a pretty good display!)
dont be too ambitious with the food, you want to mingle, not spend all your time cooking! stick to the usual burgers and sausages but make soem lovley colourful salads, coleslaw and potato salad, (i have a tasty recipie for that if you want it!) always scatter a bit of chopped parsley over the salads, makes it look nice, use pretty bowls and serving dishes (i bet you can borrow some from friends if you dont have enough of your own!)

i find paste tables very good to use as serving tables, put white sheets on them so they reach the floor, then add colour with either proper cloths or paper ones, how about a few helium ballons, they will look quite pretty and then maybe the girls could release tehm at the end of the evening and send them up to daddy!

i hope that is of some help, dont mean to be patronising! Blush, apologys if it is1

RedMoomin · 17/08/2010 16:29

No worries desire. Glad we sorted that out before I left for the day Smile

Hopefully you will find that as you work on staying sober other things in life will start to improve - such as your self-esteem and self-worth. For me personally my self-esteem and self-worth have been horribly damaged by my drinking and all the shit that came with it. I am hoping it will improve!

Honestly you are doing really well! I hope that you will start to feel a little bit better soon x

RedMoomin · 17/08/2010 16:31

JWN - I am taking notes for the day when I actually have a garden to have a BBQ! You made it sounds really quite easy!

jesuswhatnext · 17/08/2010 16:31

awww moomin, im sending you a hug!, you are a fantastic person, dont let anyone tell you any differant!, you have been here for me so amny times in teh last few weeks!!!

jesuswhatnext · 17/08/2010 16:34

tbh, moomin, i do find entertaining very easy, i like cooking which helps, but i am naturally quite gregarious and have always enjoyed putting a party together! - i have 10 coming for dinner on sunday!, it will be a very casual meal, catering for adults, teenager and toddlers!, i love it! Grin

RedMoomin · 17/08/2010 16:34

Thank you JWN, I have a nice big smile on my face now! I think that the person that has done the most damage to self worth/ esteem/ respect etc etc is me! So I am working on trying to be kind to myself!

Big hug sent straight back to you - hope you are getting through the day OK now!

RedMoomin · 17/08/2010 16:36

JWN - bowing down in admiration of your entertaining prowess. And also your joie de vivre - bit of a change to 11 weeks ago isn't it? Smile

jesuswhatnext · 17/08/2010 16:37

RedMoomin · 17/08/2010 16:38

RedMoomin · 17/08/2010 16:51

Nearly home time!

I hope that everyone has a lovely evening and I will 'see' you all tomorrow. Thanks as always for everyone on here and for all your posts.

Bye!

desiretochange · 17/08/2010 17:02

Enjoy your evening Moomin:)

venusandmars · 17/08/2010 17:23

Hello everyone (missed moomin for the evening) and welcome to saffysmum.

Sorry you were having a crap afternoon JWN. Isn't it strange how those feelings just creep up on you when you are not expecting them. I hope you have been using your own mantra and just telling it to Fuck the Fuck right off. Hope you have a good evening. Any meetings planned?

I find it all too easy to compare myself with others, sometimes others who are sober longer than I am, sometimes others who can drink a glass and then leave it, sometimes with people who are lost everything through drink. None of it makes me feel any better about myself, not even comparing myself with people who are worse off. But I do like the things on here where we share the things that we enjoy about not drinking. JWN you are such a star at that.

venusandmars · 17/08/2010 17:34

Trinity I posted on your other thread, and just wanted to say that as well as making arrangements for food etc, make sure you plan some time for yourself. Let those around you who love you and who loved Neil, help you out. Ask for their help, ask people to give you space if you need it, ask them to hug you if you need it.

I really hope everything is as you would want it to celebrate Neil's life. As you said in a post yesterday, you had the love of a very good man for 10 years. Vx

Saffysmum · 17/08/2010 17:41

So you wonderful babes, what do you drink when you're not drinking then? I'm sat here with a glass of Tesco fizzy hint of peach water, and it's ok, but that's about it. Any tips? (Trying not to notice that it's fast approaching the time of day when I uncork the Cava..) Thanks for the welcome Venus.

venusandmars · 17/08/2010 17:53

Saffysmum, I like things that are not too sweet, so lime and soda, or grapefrui juice and tonic. I like lots of the herbal teas (always have) so any of those with a chocolate biscuit suits me during the evening.

Many of us like a N&T which is a nothing and tonic. My particular N&T is a no-gin and tonic. Must be in a lovely glass, with cold, fizzy tonic, ice cubes and a slice of lemon or limeometimes I don't know why I ever bothered with the gin, and I'd certainly choose a really well made N&T over a horrid warm G&T made with cheap gin, flat tonic and no ice. Yuk.

venusandmars · 17/08/2010 17:57

Oh and I also like sparkling apple and ginger, and elderflower and lemon.

Just keep experimenting till you find the range of things that suit you, and enjoy trying out new things. Whatever you spend is likely to be cheaper than wine. Some on here are big coke drinkers. Don't worry about the sugar or caffeine etc. None of it will do you as much harm as alcohol at the moment.

MIFLAW · 17/08/2010 17:57

Saffy

What do YOU drink when you're not drinking? Presumably you're not on a 24-hr ethanol drip.

Otherwise, assuming you mean, "can any drinks kill the craving in the early days?" then I would recommend "full-fat" Coke, anything sugary, anything chocolatey, anything milk-based, or anything mint-flavoured.

It is quite hard to "fancy" an alcoholic drink on top of any of those.

MIFLAW · 17/08/2010 18:00

But then, I don't believe in "pretend" alcoholic drinks - I never drink non-alcoholic beer for example, as I am too afraid that I will then think "what's the point?" and have a real one. Kidding other people ("this dry ginger is actually a scotch and soda") is one thing but I am very wary of kidding myself.

But that's only for me - some people on here swear by their N&T.

It really doesn't matter what you drink as long as it contains no alcohol.

Saffysmum · 17/08/2010 18:11

Thanks - I drink a lot of tea during the day, just fancy something nice in the evening. I actually love Becks Alcohol Free lager, as it doesn't taste that different from the real thing, but like MIFLAW I don't want to drink it in case I think I might as well have a real one - bit too tempting at the mo. Hate herbal teas and milky drinks - but coke's ok. Will get some nice soft drinks in. Have just worked out that my bottle a night habit was costing £35 a week! So have decided to order a couple of books a week from Amazon, as I'm a complete bookworm, and save the rest for Christmas! Thanks!
