Steve Allen leaves LBC 'with immediate effect'

Blimey. 44 years at LBC, I thought he was immovable. I'd love to know what happened to cause this without even a wave of farewell. He'd have made a right meal of it on his programme if it had happened to someone else.

My guilty pleasure..listening to old Steve Allen broadcasts where he boasts about his long contract & how he'd NEVER leave LBC! 🤣🤣🤣

daisychain01 · 10/04/2024 18:34

I don't miss Steve Allen one bit. I wrote to LBC on several occasions telling them to get him off, he's a misogynist, ablist, bigot. I can't believe he lasted so long. One boring, ill-informed rant for 4 hours a day, no thank you,

In my opinion, Ian Payne has come into his own, in the slot that SA used to occupy - his genuine kindness comes through, he's balanced in his views and a real professional. Even though his specialist subject is sport, he makes sure his topics are varied and interesting and it's nice to have actual conversations with real people. He doesn't always know everything but that's quite endearing because he admits that he learns a lot from the people who ring in.

newnamethanks · 10/04/2024 19:13

I agree. I find Ian Payne quite soothing and a delightful change from the venomous bigotry of SA savaging away of a morning. I hope his hanging baskets thrive though and continue to delight the people of Twickenham.

Ian Payne can be quite an arguementative little so-and-so with his callers but at least he has people phoning in.
SA would only have texts and was very belittling if the texters grasp of grammar wasn't up to his standards.
Steve Allen really was a nasty spiteful little man .
I listened from 06.00 to 06.15 then I go for a shower , then in the car until Nick Ferrari took over ( but mainly because LBC does good travel updates )

BalloonInvestigator · 10/04/2024 21:42

Anyone know what he's doing now, maybe just retired, but I think he'll miss broadcasting.

userno777 · 10/04/2024 23:01

Oh I loved Steve Allen. I loved his humour and his chat.

For once, I don't believe it's due to trolls, I'm certainly not one! It's quite interesting a year on for us radio buffs to discuss but you don't need to if it isn't your thing.

doubleshotcappuccino · 11/04/2024 04:29

Instead of using time for the under slept and over medicated to share views that would be cut off during the day LBC are missing a trick to use these slots to raise their game. Olly Duggan has been fantastic in his early trial slots. I can't listen as it jars me so put Andrew Marr, James O or Carol Vorders on catch up ..

Hi , I actually miss Steve and never found him a bigot at all...he never took life too seriously and let's not forget all the work he did for charity.. He has many loyal fans and as luxh as some of you may not like him.there are others including le who miss his banter. I let Steve at his Magic Circle Christmaz Cracker show and he admitted he has been put on "gardening leave by LBC. I think we will see or hear him back on a radio station soon.

How Steve burp Allen survived as long as he did is incomprehensible. He would NEVER be entertained by a reputable radio station let alone TV. See him on YouTube when he was on 5 Live. He looks out of his depth & contributes nothing. Listen to his last show on LBC to dispel any ideas he was dropped for being controversial. No, he was dropped for being boring, repeating 40yo stories . He should've been dropped decades ago.

Zyq · 11/04/2024 08:20

When in bitching mode he was constantly saying he was "sick to death" of something. He used that phrase so often, I used to wonder whether he'd ever actually thought about what it meant. I gave up on listening to him years before he got booted.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 11/04/2024 16:11

I often listend to Steve before i got out of bed - I often thought, how does he get away with it - he was terribly funny and IMO said what needed to be said😂

Where is now??

You can still sign the campaign to get him back https://www.change.org/p/bring-steve-allen-back-to-lbc

You're on to a loser by trying to turn Steve Allen into a victim of political correctness. He had a good run, getting well paid for talking about his boring life & repeating the same old stories from 40 years ago. His last show was an absolute car crash. Someone at Global must've suddenly woken up, listened to him & removed him PDQ!

Chriscross34 · 11/04/2024 19:39

Love Steve and he will ne back soon.. absolutely fantastic guy absolutely very popular amongst lots of people

mrchas · 12/04/2024 09:01

Anyone who thinks that ANY radio station will re-hire Allen is way off beam....he should been removed many years ago.

DysonBison · 12/04/2024 11:58

Steve Allen always struck me as a man broadcasting while in the grip of really powerful indigestion. One who didn't care for women very much, either.

Chriscross34 · 12/04/2024 12:41

I'm think he's really entertaining.. I loved listening to him.on LBC...still never mind..

LOL! Was it indigestion or his bile bubbling to the surface? As for him being a misogynist, I'd add misanthropist to his long list of flaws.

Probably all the food he ate , he was always blethering on about it , then in the next breath blethering on about his diabetes.

One of his "hilarious" podcasts was when he'd been out and ordered himself a huge takeaway , but flumped onto the sofa , fell asleep in front of the TV and managed to upend the container onto his lap.

Hmm My first thought wasn't hilarious , I was waiting for a punchline or something funny not some daft prick who orders too much food , his greedy eyes being even bigger than his greedy belly ,then wears it .

Good bloody riddance to this desperately unfunny old queen!

user1471867483 · 26/08/2025 10:03

I still miss Steve. Ian's boring.

newnamethanks · 26/08/2025 10:41

Steve was past his best. Anecdotes about berating the poor staff of M&S and obsessively feeding the LBC staff were more boring than Ian could ever be. Who needs a bucket of vitriol thrown at them each morning? I like Ian, a gentle introduction to the day before I have to turn Ferrari off.
