Steve Allen leaves LBC 'with immediate effect'

Blimey. 44 years at LBC, I thought he was immovable. I'd love to know what happened to cause this without even a wave of farewell. He'd have made a right meal of it on his programme if it had happened to someone else.

I have taken LBC off my preset button now, and replaced it with Magic

Love Magic! And Absolute 80s and Heart

Ive got all the DAB music stations on my car radio, plus LBC and R4.

I'm a radio tart, no loyalty to any one station Grin

I am always relieved when his timeslot is covered by someone else , I notice if there;s a big news story they get Nick Ferrari (a Prope Journalist) to cover it as TBH , SA cannot handle news

He drivels on about himself, the food he shovels down , goadily prattling on about eating whole packs of pigs in blankets
that dogs in Battersea just need "someone to love them" - Qualiied dog behaviourist there steve ? No didn't think so .
Once said if you're tired pull onto the hard shoulder Shock
The comments about Tilly Ramsey were cruel and he's got into trouble about Meghan Markle comments
And something about Maplins and a bag that was so petty I lost the will to live

I don't think there was any reason he refused to call Sam Smith by the chosen gender , just spite .
He keeps called Anton deBec "Anthony Beak" ( 'cos he thinks its funny) Hmm

And for such a fucking pedant , when he says 8485 *oh ( as in letter O not zero ) and draws out the ohh^ .

I know I could switch him off but I only suffer him for 15-30 minutes , now , no more . !

I don’t know the context as don’t or didn’t listen to Steve (only came on this thread as seen the reports of him leaving and remember the Tilly Ramsey thing) but Anthony Beak is Anton’s real name

SA will never apologise and who knows why he's been sacked. LBC weren't prepared for him to leave, poor Nick Abbott's been dragooned in to do 10-1 freeing Ian Payne for SA slot. All a bit last minute. He must be completely traumatised. Maybe he said 'I'm not apologising, sack me then' and to his surprise LBC said nobody's irreplaceable including you. Bye.

I can imagine that being the conversation - SA did come across as thinking he was bomb-proof.

what he failed to appreciate was that Global Radio has a brand and a reputation to uphold and quite frankly he was bringing them right down into the gutter. It was almost a Ratner moment - one false move and his whole career was trashed, but he was already on a knife-edge.

It will be interesting if he has gone for misgedering Sam Smith after everything he has saod about Katie Price, Gemma Collins, Kerry Katona, Tilly Ramsey and other women over the years.

Very interesting.

Just going to say the same. Shows what disregard there is in society for women.

He was offensive about anyone, from Prince Harry, to Anton du Beke, and look at how toxic he was about Matt Goss and David and Brooklyn Beckham (he used to mimic how DB spoke and how useless BB was, horrendous insults.)

I don't think he only targeted women, he wasn't that selective.

PetitPorpoise · 01/03/2023 17:44

@daisychain01 i'm hardly an avid listener but used to have him on after Chris Evans left Radio 2. It struck me as quite noticeable that he would be going through the paper and would have something catty to say about every single story about a famous woman he came across. Like a default negative setting.

With men it seemed to be a bit more mixed as to the comments he would make about them and whatever reason they were in the paper.

newnamethanks · 02/03/2023 13:12

Weird life innit? Insult as many women as you like with no repercussions but insult a man who is no longer a man and the roof falls in.

So many posters who don't like Steve Allen but still listen to him. Interesting

I won't lie, he did offend me at one point and I stopped listening. Basically lost interest for a few years.

But he's very entertaining and funny, love to have some chit chat and gossip in the background. Can be quite rude, but oh well. And bigoted is thrown around so often it's pathetic. For example, his dislike of Meghan was so ridiculous, but it's not bigoted FFS - as a stunning mixed woman myself, he just doesn't like her, nothing more.

He's very marmite. If you don't like, don't listen. Still, I'm amazed that this is what took him out and not everything else.

Like many others, I won't be listening to LBC anymore. Besides nick abbot, there presenters are all a bunch of drearies. I have drying paint I need to keep an eye on

purser25 · 02/03/2023 19:42

Didn’t like the way he used to suggest people need to take their tablets inferring there was something mentally wrong with them. Even though this was done in jest for someone with mental health issues it might be very traumatic.

Of all the DJs who didn't look how I pictured them, Steve Allen tops the list by a looooong way.

Yes.

I listened to him for over 40 years.

Hated him for what he said about Tilly but he was from a time when you could talk about peoples appearances. But no excuse.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 02/03/2023 20:25

He was also obsessed with money. He must have millions tucked away but still wanted every thing for free.

He did apologize to Gordon Ramsay I read somewhere although he should have apologized to poor Tilly.

GobbieMaggie · 02/03/2023 20:37

I loved Steve Allen, he was a breath of fresh air on my way into work. That he spoke his mind and burst all the pretensions of ridiculous celebrities was wonderful. And all he said about Tilly Ramsey was she was a tubby little thing who couldn't dance, which was true. Absolutely no reason to listen to LBC now, apart from Nick Ferrari on a day off but switch over the minute that wanker O'brien starts on one.

daisychain01 · 03/03/2023 04:54

And all he said about Tilly Ramsey was she was a tubby little thing who couldn't dance

"All he said" is very dismissive. He called her a "chubby little thing"

Fat shaming
Patronising
Misogynistic

And apologised for insulting a woman, to a third party man her father (like she's her father's property), is not the same as a sincere apology to the woman you've insulted.

When I was 19 years old that sort of comment would have stayed with me a long time. Body image at the age of 19 is everything.

Nimbostratus100 · 03/03/2023 04:57

I really miss him at this time of day - LBC is completely rubbish now

BatshitCrazyWoman · 03/03/2023 06:30

I've just left my house to go to work, and at last I can listen to LBC before I leave 😁 so glad SA has gone 🎊

Exactly. Really like IP, prefer him in the 10 pm slot but happy SA has gone.

VanillaSox · 03/03/2023 07:04

hypocritical gobshite James O'Brien ranting
yes!!!! 😁 sanctimonious pr*ck

Ladybug14 · 03/03/2023 07:07

If you don't like James OB.... why? Confused

FitAt50 · 03/03/2023 07:09

Thank God. His show was just him bitching about people. Boasting about celebs in 'the business' that he knew, Biggins, Dale Winton, Cilla etc. Repeating everything twice and constantly giving out his email address.

Smileyoriley · 03/03/2023 08:49

I loved listening to Steve Allen, although he sometimes made me switch off in anger at his comments. I'm sure we would have disagreed over politics but I'm on board with him on the current transgender debacle and find it incredible that this rather than other issues appear to have led to his demise.

daisychain01 · 03/03/2023 12:29

It was probably on the cards anyway, his position was becoming increasingly untenable and what SA said towards the end just hastened his own demise.

It's like the dreadful long serving pita in every company who constantly offended everyone, isnt that brilliant at their job, and somehow manages to survive like a cockroach but nobody quite has the guts to make that final decision. They end up digging their own grave and suddenly - bang -they're gone in a moment.

BalloonInvestigator · 03/03/2023 17:31

Wonder what he'll do now, can't see him being happy completely out of showbiz in one form or another.

purser25 · 03/03/2023 18:38

I do wonder if he had some autistic traits with the lack of empathy and not realising he was being offensive etc etc. However don’t they say that most people are somewhere on the spectrum to different extents. He drove me made but I do miss the travel he spoke in the morning it did help you doze of again!
