Blimey. 44 years at LBC, I thought he was immovable. I'd love to know what happened to cause this without even a wave of farewell. He'd have made a right meal of it on his programme if it had happened to someone else.

OP posts:

I definitely think there's more to the story.

No way would Global Radio sever / not renew his contract when he used to attract listening figures of 1M + in what was effectively a graveyard slot, not many presenters with families would want to do that year after year.

SquashPenguin · 26/02/2023 07:14

Good I’m glad. He’s vile. Tries to be witty and fails massively.

Renoir56 · 26/02/2023 07:43

I always enjoyed listening to Steve Allen on the odd occasion I had to get up very early. Found his rants quite amusing. It's very sudden that he's left and if he has also cancelled a show, as mentioned above by someone, then perhaps it is a health issue.

I used to listen to LBC a lot but have decided that life is too short to listen to that hypocritical gobshite James O'Brien ranting.

Nimbostratus100 · 26/02/2023 07:52

I miss him very much, his lighthearted nattering in the morning has kept me company many times, no, the replacement is no good at all, he just goes in all heavy and contemplative, and deliberately adversarial, to get a debate going - like all of LBC. Too much like hard work, can't be bothered with it

BalloonInvestigator · 26/02/2023 08:09

I see that Darren Adam has also left

Awww I really liked him!

MegCleary · 26/02/2023 09:09

Oh thank the lord, I am a terrible sleeper and he was so annoying in the mornings. I wonder who they’ll get. I did like Darren Adam and hope he comes back. I miss Ben Kentish at night though, happy for him he’s earlier in the day but Ian Payne is annoying at night. I keep putting on a podcast and falling asleep midway. The radio was always a good friend but Payne angered me going to sleep and bloody Allen enraged me waking up!

purser25 · 26/02/2023 19:08

Steve Allen in many ways was quite an odd man with some compulsive traits. He couldn’t stop buying things, he seemed to find it hard to have empathy for others. However he could talk well for several hours though did repeat himself a lot. I will miss him in the morning as he helped me doze. Constantly talking about his food odd diet even though he was diabetic. He was quite awful about what he said about people but knew how to get away with it. Suspect it is a culmination of a whole series of saying the wrong thing.

Hohofortherobbers · 26/02/2023 21:34

He has a close friendship with Chris Moyles, I wonder whether he'll comment, he's been dropped by a show before hasn't he? Radio 1about 20 yrs ago?

Winterday1991 · 27/02/2023 04:47

So disappointing, Steve is just the best.

Ladybug14 · 27/02/2023 05:21

Will we ever know the real reason he left/was sacked?

I would imagine so. He always made a big deal how he would never leave.

DaisyCornflowerBlue · 27/02/2023 05:40

According to Glinner's Twitter SA was told to refer to SS as They and SA refused.

As a shift worker I'd listen to SA in the early mornings. It's weird him not being there now. He was offensive but for me you can always switch off if you don't like what you're hearing.

I wish they'd dump O'Brien though. I stopped listening to him years ago, the whiny git.

Ladybug14 · 27/02/2023 05:40

He did. And he said recently that he had signed a new contract. It seems strange as he's been so rude and contemptuous over the years, and yet now (it appears) he's been sacked

Bchagall · 27/02/2023 07:28

I made the mistake of switching on at. 6.30 this morning only to hear Ian Payne droning on about immigration. Oh for Steve's chirpy voice talking drivel at that time in the morning! I'll miss him.

Crikeyalmighty · 27/02/2023 07:37

Can't stand the bloke but I agree with what he said. I refuse to pander to this 'they' business ( and I'm a centre left voter) I have no problem if they want to be called 'she' - I'm utterly fed up of this pretentious nonsense from a bunch of self obsessed narcissists- and no I won't be responding to the transgender PR crowds who always dominate these posts-I only wish the same amount of time and effort and PR was given to the disabled or mental health --but guess it doesn't make such good clickbait/copy or pretty pictures.

Nedastry · 27/02/2023 15:39

Steve Allen good riddance pompous man… everything all about him …not forget his obsession …Dale Winton…makes me cringe when he talked about him …he should of been sacked years ago belittling people an getting away with it with his vile comments…🤨😳

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/02/2023 17:17

I am always relieved when his timeslot is covered by someone else , I notice if there;s a big news story they get Nick Ferrari (a Prope Journalist) to cover it as TBH , SA cannot handle news

He drivels on about himself, the food he shovels down , goadily prattling on about eating whole packs of pigs in blankets
that dogs in Battersea just need "someone to love them" - Qualiied dog behaviourist there steve ? No didn't think so .
Once said if you're tired pull onto the hard shoulder Shock
The comments about Tilly Ramsey were cruel and he's got into trouble about Meghan Markle comments
And something about Maplins and a bag that was so petty I lost the will to live

I don't think there was any reason he refused to call Sam Smith by the chosen gender , just spite .
He keeps called Anton deBec "Anthony Beak" ( 'cos he thinks its funny) Hmm

And for such a fucking pedant , when he says 8485 *oh ( as in letter O not zero ) and draws out the ohh^ .

I know I could switch him off but I only suffer him for 15-30 minutes , now , no more . !

Have you considered that so much of what SA talked about on his programme was just rubbish - let's face it, at 4 am who wants deep meaningful analysis Grin - it was quantity not quality, stream of consciously a la "no Hesitation, Repetition or Deviation" (he failed on all counts but anyway). It was highly likely to be rubbish, waffle and space-filling

He was never consistent or coherent in his views (except when it came to showbiz, he does have an encyclopaedic knowledge of that), he sometimes contradicted himself even in the same sentence! That was because of his 'one-in-a-million" broadcasting style that Global allowed him to get away with for a very long time. They turned a blind eye to a lot of what he said because he attracted the audience figures, getting people to tune their radio to LBC and stay there.

The tipping point based on what I've read was

The furore over his mean and tone deaf comments fired at Tilly Ramsay
His refusal to acknowledge Sam Smiths preferred pronouns, and when he was told to retract his mis stating of them, he probably thought bollocks I can't be bothered to toe the line anymore You can teach an old, misogynistic, bigoted dinosaur new tricks,

I never paid the slightest attention to the accuracy of what he said, it was just a load of old waffle. A very Marmite presenter.

daisychain01 · 28/02/2023 12:32

I'm surprised people don't like Ian Payne.

I think he has a really nice soothing voice first thing, he's a bit like Clive Bull, very polite and sounds kind and caring. He certainly doesn't come across as goady. Although his passion is sport, in recent times, I've hardly heard him mention football unless it's a headline story and then it isn't your average Saturday afternoon football chat that he was really good at.

He seems at least switched on to the main news items (never as good as Tom Swarbrick or Theo Usherwood but nobody can beat them, they're the titans of the Political scene). I remember Theo during Brexit / COVID, he was working about 17 hour days for about 2 years and got very ill as a consequence.

Mellymoon · 28/02/2023 16:25

@daisychain01 ian Payne if you actually listen to what he says is pretty ignorant and not all that bright. His views on politics, environmental issues and things are very rigid and often he’s not very nice to callers. Clive bull is a gentleman though

MegCleary · 28/02/2023 18:24

Love Tom swarbrick and Theo usherwood

Nimbostratus100 · 28/02/2023 18:26

I have taken LBC off my preset button now, and replaced it with Magic

Yes, I'm always irritated by Ian Payne who chooses topics for phone ins and then spends the whole time saying 'I know nothing about this topic'. FFS do some bloody research then, man! I bet you get paid a hell of a lot more than I do for...what, exactly?

Chriscross34 · 01/03/2023 02:43

Steve is a fantastic broadcaster. There's no way he'd leave LBC, it's obvto MD and his loyal listeners he was pushed out. It's an absolute disgrace. Please sign the petition to bring him back on Change.org.

Steve Allen leaves LBC 'with immediate effect'
daisychain01 · 01/03/2023 05:09

I don't think it's realistic to "bring Steve Allen back" (2.5K compared to his audience figures of over 1M .... hmm)

(a) he probably won't want to come back

(b) he can't unsay what he said about Tilly and Sam, plus all the other insults he's come out with.

I've been for and against him over the years, but on this one I think the ship has well and truly sailed - whether he jumped or was pushed, he will never retract his fat-shaming and tone-deaf comments so his days on LBC are over.
