Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you would be delighted to be given a goldfish named after your ex, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/4197199--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-6-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: //www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Apologies for ignoring the various title suggestions on the last thread. However, here they are, plus a couple of other pithy observations, to kickstart the new thread. I think it's fair to say nobody is looking on this as a Golden Era! Goldfish Era, though ...

@Roysnewshirt: Everyone wants more! Chris wants more Amy; Jazzer wants more Tracey; Alice wants more time with Martha and Amy wants more space… Very true. And now we know Kirsty wants more farming expertise in the rewilding project, but not Pip (thank the lord) so does that mean approaching Adam? Currently under-employed.

@LillianGish: I tune in to hear birdsong and bleating in the English countryside not hammy acting and suggestive grunting.

@stilldumdedumming: Archers is good at the dynamics of family, farming, what it means to have your job, your home and your inheritance so closely aligned etc etc not this nonsense!

@DoctorTwo: Like fuck would Pheobe buy her parents a goldfish each. The Ambridge character transplant fairy has been working overtime this past few weeks, it's been absolutely fucking appalling bar a couple of exceptions.

Can't disagree with any of that. I want to hear more about the pigs and any other effects of Brexit. A topical insert about the war in Ukraine must surely be on the way.

Any happy listeners out there? Any disgruntled listeners with even more grumbles? Over to you!

Thanks for the new thread @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g, one of those exceptions was Jim last night regretting his hands off experience as a father. That was nicely done, the scenes with the fish were excruciatingly unfunny, as everything 'comedy' is in the Archers.

Thanks Gasp0de

I'm now awaiting the rewilding of the goldfish s/l

Thanks @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

ZT with longer, highlighted, hair, tallish and slim, is how I imagine Alice. Kate a little shorter than her little sister and slight with a new-agey wardrobe. Adam is auburn haired and tall. Adam would be ideal as agricultural advisor for the rewilding

I find the 'komedy kapers' improve on 2nd listening.

BowerOfBramble · 14/03/2022 12:47

I liked Jim being much nicer than Alice deserved reflective on parenting last night as well. Very sweet actually. And of course he has an addict in his own family so it's close to home.

RIP your daughter's goldfish.

I find the 'komedy kapers' improve on 2nd listening - that might explain it then because as I understand it radio producers/directors have to listen to everytthing three hundred and eleventy million times before the programme is broadcast. By then it must be positively hilarious!

TBF I'm quite enjoying the comic relief being fish rather than That Cat for a change.

Thank you for the new thread.

I think Roy (and the SWs) forgot that he had Phoebe living in his house for a great many months so I am hardly surprised that "Kate" is already trying to escape.

Per google a goldfish can survive for an hour or more out of water. I suppose we should be thankful that each episode of the Archers only lasts 12 minutes.

Just this

The audience really doesn't need this 'comedy' in order to appreciate the drama of Jim's recollections

Thanks for the new thread!

Also mere:

No, St S would set up a village scheme to organise other people taking refugees

This really made me lol. Grin

I too think Phoebe would know about proper tanks for fish.

Kate wears 'clown trousers' according to Ruairi. I know exactly what he meant.

Well I liked the Kate and Roy fish scenes.

It was better than hearing Alice re- write history. And her endless whining.

"And what exactly do you mean by saying you're the stable, consistent parent"?

What do you think Alice?

If she had any decency at all Chris would be in The Nest - not her.

Report
EthelTheAardvark · 14/03/2022 21:46

It's a bit mad for Alice to put herself forward as stable parent, but Chris' assumption that he would always get final say about anything to do with Martha sounded very controlling.

Report
CloseYourEyesAndSee · 14/03/2022 21:51

Didn't Chris choose to leave the nest?

Didn't Chris choose to leave the nest?

He did and he shouldn't have. If Alice actually cared about Alice she'd have agreed to let Chris stay there.

Do people take goldfish they have owned for less than a week to the vet? I think Roy would have a far more practical approach to fish-keeping and would have baulked at the consultation fee.

I would definitely prefer to have an update on Webster instead of all this focus on fish.

Thanks for the new thread. I'd just like to claim a small victory. I usually listen as I make the morning coffee. I managed to time when I boil the kettle and largely obscure the stupid vet business.
And got to listen to the much more nuanced and interesting mediation session!

How I am not looking forward to months of Chris and Alice tearing Martha apart. And however did we guess this would happen???

Agreed, it's not brill.

Tune a radio to another channel?

Perhaps instead of listening, have a kip. Er ...

In my experience goldfish are either dead or alive. I have never taken one to the vet - does that make me a bad person?

A fishy digression: Thirty or so years ago I was the teacher in a school nursery class in London. We had a lot of Vietnamese children in the school, the older ones had escaped in the infamous boats the younger ones were born in the camps in Hong Kong. Anyway, one little tot told me one of the classroom goldfish was ill and I needed blue stuff for the water. I enquired at a pet shop and it was a real thing so I got some and it perked it up completely. The little boy also played chess with his Dad at home. I often wonder what he and some of the others are doing now, they were so clever and motivated.

Alice v Chris - an almighty village row looms. Carter vs Aldridge. I wonder if we might hear from Emma any time soon. She's been MIA for months.

My prediction: Kate Fish will snuff it, Roy will be mortified, Kate will be very triumphant, at some point it will emerge that Kate is actually on Roy #5 as none of them have lasted more than a few days, hilarity all round.

I truly hope alice gets some proper legal advice rather than setting up some massive pointless court battle that would not happen in real life.
A good lawyer would tell alice to agree ti shared care through mediation and not to waste time money and goodwill fighting Chris on this
