Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you would love to take part in the Mysteries, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/4197199--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-6-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @ButtonSister and @BorsetshireBanality for title suggestions. I went with their idea in the interests of keeping the title fairly short.

@LillianGish and @FoxgloveSummers made cracking but longer suggestions, which (mashed up) will do a great job of kicking off our new thread.

Evictions (Tom and Tash), depictions (Bridge Farm Christmas card), conniptions (entire cast and crew of the Mysteries), convictions (Philip) and addictions (Alice) - what are our predictions for 2022 in Ambridge? All sure to make this the Best Ambridge Christmas Evah!

This thread should take us through to early January unless something very exciting happens (ha ha, fat chance). My predictions: this is a bit left field, but I wonder if Peggy will offer to buy the shop and flat so Tom and Gnasher (great coinage, whose was it?) can stay put. I don't believe Hazel is sincere about wanting to live in/regularly visit Ambridge. She's always been utterly two-faced and rotten to the core, why would she change now?

The Mysteries will, of course be a triumph and briefly borrowing the🔮 (sorry, Bore!) I expect we are going to hear them at some point over the New Year period.

Over to you!

I thought Jill had strong ideological objections to private schools, or was that a case of reinventing the past years later when there was a campaign against Borchester Grammar converting to a comp? She was pro, Kathy Perks (who taught at the Grammar) was against, IIRC.

Conversions abound and it’s not just Harrison - Lily’s kitchens, Hazel’s flat, Jazzer’s finances, Bert’s bungalow...come and discuss The Archers - are you a convert or could you be converted?

She had! I think she got over-ruled because she wanted David and Elizabeth to get some education, and at any of the local schools apart from the Grammar David would have got nowhere, while Elizabeth would have done the square root of bugger all in the way of work; their parents hoped that not being at home might persuade them to work out of sheer boredom.

It has to be admitted that private school did neither David nor Elizabeth the slightest bit of good, so from Jill's point of view the exercise had been just money down the drain.

Not surprising that Russ graciously agreed to Lily doing a course at Felpersham. It keeps them conveniently at Lower Loxley for the foreseeable.

Let's hope she meets someone on the course who helps the scales to fall from her eyes. Maybe a lecturer who can't stop laughing at the notion of an art gallery being a sensible element of estate management.

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Fabulous, Lil’G!

I am glad that SOMEBODY has introduced the idea that Phoebe might be a tad embarrassed about helping to run a campsite since graduating.
I appreciate that they Editors wouldn't have wanted to get political during Brexit etc. (why they decided she should study PPE will remain a mystery, I expect), but it would have been a great opportunity to send her away to do something important, burn out and return to Ambridge for a better lifestyle. Why not make her a journalist or something she could do over Zoom?

WhoppingBigBackside · 19/01/2022 18:13

Some universities offer courses in Estate Management. I think the idea is that you do several modules

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/01/2022 18:22

I may be placing too much reliance on the SWs' phrasing, but Lily said she was going to enrol on a course. That suggested to me it was a foregone conclusion she was going to get on, i.e. if you have enough money you'll be accepted. Most degree courses are a bit pickier than that, and I would expect people to talk about applying for a place rather than going straight to 'I'm going to enrol on this course'.

You used to be able to do Estate Management at Oxford.

A friend of mine did it.

BeardieWeirdie · 19/01/2022 19:07

Oh go Chris! I love it when someone puts an entitled Archer in their place.

WhoppingBigBackside · 19/01/2022 19:20

Relationship advice from Tom?

Didn't one of the Royals do it?

I don't care enough to Google it.

Tom's nether garments are all smouldering: Hazel told him no such thing.

Molecule · 19/01/2022 19:59

David went to Brymore, a state boarding school with a pronounced agricultural bent. I only know this as it was mentioned on one of the early Archers’ threads and I thought it was the perfect school for DS. An eight hour (on a good day) round trip made me think again.

TheHoptimist · 19/01/2022 20:00

So Tom still has the hots for Kirsty.

Yes! Thank you. I had forgotten that it was a state boarding school he went to. So that's three of the four not in private education.
WhoppingBigBackside · 19/01/2022 20:10

Didn't John go to Brymore?

@WhoppingBigBackside

Didn't John go to Brymore?
Yes, he did. Peggy contributed to the fees to send him there.

Um. But it's definitely a state school. Now I am getting confused.
