Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you would love to take part in the Mysteries, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/4197199--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-6-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @ButtonSister and @BorsetshireBanality for title suggestions. I went with their idea in the interests of keeping the title fairly short.

@LillianGish and @FoxgloveSummers made cracking but longer suggestions, which (mashed up) will do a great job of kicking off our new thread.

Evictions (Tom and Tash), depictions (Bridge Farm Christmas card), conniptions (entire cast and crew of the Mysteries), convictions (Philip) and addictions (Alice) - what are our predictions for 2022 in Ambridge? All sure to make this the Best Ambridge Christmas Evah!

This thread should take us through to early January unless something very exciting happens (ha ha, fat chance). My predictions: this is a bit left field, but I wonder if Peggy will offer to buy the shop and flat so Tom and Gnasher (great coinage, whose was it?) can stay put. I don't believe Hazel is sincere about wanting to live in/regularly visit Ambridge. She's always been utterly two-faced and rotten to the core, why would she change now?

The Mysteries will, of course be a triumph and briefly borrowing the🔮 (sorry, Bore!) I expect we are going to hear them at some point over the New Year period.

Over to you!

Some French and Welsh words are similar because they share a latin root. Ffenestr/fenêtre & pont/pont are obvious ones. Window is probably from Old Norse, bridge is probably from Dutch

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/01/2022 11:23

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Both from the Ancient Greek ekklesia, I would imagine, same root as ecclesiastical.

Pinguis is the Latin for sleek and oily, so seems like a good root for penguin.

Should have added that the Rpmans, arch-borrowers/appropriators of all sorts of things, borrowed lots and lots of Greek words, especially (I think) for words to do with Christianity. Ekklesia was latinised to ecclesia and it then passed into other languages.

I see we are less than 100 posts from the end of the thread now. Title ideas? We won't need a new thread for a few more days unless something earth-shattering happens in the next day or two.

Romans. Sigh. I spent years and years of my life studying Latin and Greek and now can't type Roman. Beginning of the end, as I find myself thinking/saying several times a day these days.

I think the Cornish for church is Eglos which is similar. I find the many/most words either Sound or look the same in Cornish and Welsh. They’re so obviously practically the same language! Don’t know much about Breton.

BowerOfBramble · 16/01/2022 12:35

Finding it hard to think of any ongoing plot lines other than pinky and perky and Pat and Ptony having to share a house.

Faceicle · 16/01/2022 12:40

If I remember correctly, when (previous) Tom 1st ditched Kirsty because he wanted to shag the supermarket buyer Pat was really upset about it and mentioned something to (previous) Tony about how Kirsty had looked after them when they were ill? So I can see that Kirsty would feel that she had a close bond with the bridge farm Archers.

WhoppingBigBackside · 16/01/2022 12:50

Not really.
The alphabet is different for a start. Many of the words are similar.

Faceicle · 16/01/2022 12:59

And now I've remembered that Kirsty got dumped by Sam as well. She really is horribly unlucky.

WhoppingBigBackside · 16/01/2022 13:08

Cursedy is beyond unlucky.

You don’t think? Here’s Welsh:

Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda

Here’s Cornish:

Nadelik Lowen ha Bledhen Nowydh Da!

Different letters but sound practically the same.

WhoppingBigBackside · 16/01/2022 17:45

They look similar but I don't know how the Cornish version sounds.

Using your argument, Spanish and Portuguese are the same.
Buon Natale e un Felice Anno Nuovo
Boa Natale e um feliz ano novo

I was talking to someone with Breton parents a few years ago, and he said that his mother-tongue Breton father could hold a conversation with a Welsh-speaking friend. Can't say for sure it's true.

Isn't Tregorran a cornish surname?

WhoppingBigBackside · 16/01/2022 19:18

Adults and teenagers sometimes get baptised in the church I used to go to

I don't suppose the Baptists would turn him away!
Eastie77Returns · 16/01/2022 19:54

This whole Baptism obsession is really strange. I think Harrison sounds a bit manic, as if he is suffering from depression (questioning the meaning of life) or on the verge of a breakdown.

MereDintofPandiculation · 16/01/2022 21:16

Boa Natale e um feliz ano novo. Bom Natal ….

Really enjoying these language posts. Long may they continue!

FlosCampi · 16/01/2022 23:10

If Harrison becomes a fundamentalist Christian that would be quite interesting!

Roysnewshirt · 17/01/2022 07:32

I laughed at how Detective Harrison Burns needed guidance from Miss Fallon Marple to work out where to start in his investigation into when and where he was christened. What a brainwave to suggest he asked his parents. No wonder he has never been promoted to Drugs or Vice or the MIT.

I am a bit askance that we are now facing another religious SL. Haven’t we suffered enough with Shula and her career change? Fortunately that seems to have been quietly dropped for the time being…Harrison’s theological reflections could prove pretty painful listening…

Chemenger · 17/01/2022 07:33

One character droning on about their religious journey is one too many, do we really need Harrison becoming Shula mark 2?

LillianGish · 17/01/2022 08:57

Many people have remarked they find it difficult to distinguish between the voices of Harrison and the vicar - perhaps this was a deliberate foreshadowing.

Claypots · 17/01/2022 09:07

Shockis Harrison a half-wit?!! I laughed when he questioned whether he should have played Jesus or not but really, this man is a police officer, he sounds very dim.

BeardieWeirdie · 17/01/2022 09:14

I will only tolerate this storyline if Shula and Harrison discover Jesus off-air and ride off together into the sunset, never to be heard of again.

BowerOfBramble · 17/01/2022 10:14

Now that WOULD be a story @BeardieWeirdie. Although I'd prefer Fallon to leave him first, I don't want her becoming the next Kirsty.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/01/2022 12:05

I wish it were otherwise, but there's been plenty of evidence in the news in recent times to show that some police officers are indeed very, very dim.

Jim was on very pompous form, wasn't he? Is this a precursor to Jazzer moving in with Tracy?

OP posts:
Madcats · 17/01/2022 14:09

Has Fallon ever had any decent storylines? She was full of ambition a few years ago.

She just seems to complain about things these days.

LiterallyKnowsBest · 17/01/2022 19:09

Oh dear - having to call a nibbling for company … Definitely been there.
