Thanks to witchmountain for the last thread and to dadx3 for Godfathering them! Also to any other posters whose ideas I have borrowed for the title.

Not that I like Russ but it always seems the 'baddies' have to fail and get their comeuppance and in some ways Lily would learn more if he was the one who dumps her.

I honestly think that it would be more realistic if he is the one who walks away from her eventually

TheEfficientBaxter · 01/12/2018 11:36

And who is Gwyneth? I missed the finer points of last night's episode because someone rang me!

Who dares to ring anyone when TA is on! Shock

Is there anything stopping Russ from coming down to LL and being useful. Lots of things - not many people know Lily went off to Manchester with the college deputy. She's carefully avoiding mentioning him. Can you imagine all the Christmas visitors to LL - many of whom must have had a connection with Borchester College - tipping up to find the mysteriously (presumably) missing deputy working as a glorified dogsbody? Too many people would know him to pretend he was just some old bloke she met in Manchester.

TheMadGardener · 01/12/2018 11:52

I'd love it if Lily found out that Russ has been having secret trysts with his estranged wife or claims he has to go to her over Christmas because she's having a breakdown.

Loved the sweet tree decorating scene with Rex and Lily. Rex and Johnny are two thoroughly nice chaps who both deserve to find someone nice. Not sure if there's really a long term script plan for Rex/Lily but I wouldn't mind. He's about 11/12 years older than her but my husband's 15 years older than me so that's nothing! Plus after her dalliance with father-figure Russ her mother would probably be relieved!

One thought - does Freddie actually know that Lily is living with Russ? Has anyone told him? She seems quite keen not to discuss it with the wider world.

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/12/2018 12:01

Definitely a case of pride coming before a fall after listening to her boasting about her superior management skills. To be fair she was managing a project not of her choosing which probably had limited chance of success in Ambridge.

Stew apparently comes from old French estuve (heat in steam), which in turn probably comes from a Greek word for smoke, steam. And estufa is the Portuguese for greenhouse, which sounds as if it's come from the same root.

Sorry, been catching up. I know the thread has moved on since then!

LillianGish · 01/12/2018 12:10

As far as I can see, the only thing that made Russ in any way attractive to Lily was the fact that he was the college deputy. In a position of (relative) power and forbidden fruit. Nothing we have seen or heard about Russ makes him sound remotely attractive. As an unproductive "artist" shacked up with his student girlfriend I'd say he has seriously diminished his chances. Any glamour his old job conferred on him is long gone - if Lily's friends at uni know him, they probably think he is a bit of an old saddo.

LassWiADelicateAir · 01/12/2018 12:43

I wonder what Russ does all day?

grumiosmum · 01/12/2018 12:45

Does Russ have any kids?

Have we been told either way?

ppeatfruit · 01/12/2018 12:46

Googling Gwen John?

EBearhug · 01/12/2018 12:51

the only thing that made Russ in any way attractive to Lily was the fact that he was the college deputy. In a position of (relative) power and forbidden fruit.

I don't think that was it. She went to him because his subject is art and she wanted to know more about Gwen John. If his subject was maths, she wouldn't have gone anywhere near him, whether he was deputy head or not.

Russ is massively attracted to the Gwen John and to Russ-the-tormented-artist. He was flattering and attentive to Lily at a time when everyone else was focusing on Freddie or Shula or... anyone but Lily.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 01/12/2018 13:12

I certainly think Russ's appreciation for the Gwen John - and the subtle establishment of a connection with her father - was a factor. Then his appearing to help Freddie, when she was burdened with feelings of responsibility. But now he's not helping her. He's just another burden.

witchmountain · 01/12/2018 13:31

Baxter if you mean my reference to Gwyneth it was in response to chemengers amusing predictions which involved Gwyneth Paltrow.

Also, sorry about my reaction to your post yesterday. There are much kinder ways I could have made my point.

LassWiADelicateAir · 01/12/2018 13:43

Gwen John is hardly an obscure artist known only to the cognoscenti of the art world. The Tate has several pictures on display (and its website has some beautiful drawings of cats which look as if they might have been an influence on Elizabeth Blackadder)

I don't understand the motivation for that plot line other than it being a heavy handed device to set Lily up with Russ.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 01/12/2018 14:07

I was thinking of the auction price, Lass.

MikeUniformMike · 01/12/2018 14:20

Lizzie will marry Robin (yay! More Herc) and Lily will marry Rex in a double wedding. Rosie Ruth Grace will be bridesmaid.

lottiegarbanzo · 01/12/2018 14:20

Oh it's only 'stifling ambition" working on the family farm if you're a female . I forgot.

Pip went or nearly went abroad and to Devon or somewhere didn't she ? Of course it was a plot device, what is TA if not a plot!

I find these remarks antagonistic rather than discursive. I'm all for robust discussion - happy, respectful discussion. I come here for chatty escapism, not to experience being told, in as many words, to STFU.

LassWiADelicateAir · 01/12/2018 14:51

It still makes no sense. The answer could be got from speaking to Christies, Sothebys or Bonhams. In any case Lizzy would have to have an item like this valued and re-valued on a regular basis for insurance purposes.

Actually Lily taking it into college to show to Russ may well have breached insurance conditions if anything had happened to it.

grumiosmum · 01/12/2018 18:24

Gosh there's been a lot of antagonism on here these past few days.

Must be pre-Christmas tension.

SaffyRosie · 01/12/2018 18:26

Does anybody else think that Peggy is the buyer who has put in the offer on Brian and Jennifer's house?

I remember Peggy offered to give them money before but they said no. I don't really understand why they refused as when she (Peggy) pops her clogs Jennifer (Tony and Lillian) will get it anyway. Just seemed to me thatJennifer would be getting her share early, allowing her to stay in the home she loves.

Bittermints · 01/12/2018 18:33

grumiosmum, yes, or maybe just the awful weather/onset of winter.

Poor Lily. I don't take to her but she's heading for a fall. I wonder if that encounter with Rex was the first step in a long, long-running storyline leading to a marriage. As others have said, how ironic if Elizabeth's daughter married Robin's son, given their fling all those years ago! But yes please, bring back Anthony Head asap. Maybe he could re-locate to Ambridge. I'd pay good money to hear Robin with Carol Tregorran, Jim and Lynda Snell.

I'm another Jazzer fan.

LassWiADelicateAir · 01/12/2018 19:24

If Peggy buys it she will have to pay additional dwelling stamp duty. (I'm assuming Peggy owns at least one house. For the sake of argument if the price is £1,000,000 the stamp duty as an only residence is £43,750. With the additional dwelling supplement it would be £73,750.

That is £30,000 essentially for nothing.
