And there’s some rubbish about an ex-stripper policeman?

She seems quite unpleasant.

On matters literary I began listening to an audiobook of 1984. About 30 seconds in I thought that the narrator sounded exceptionally weary. 2 seconds after this I realised it was, of course, the actor who plays Adam.
To be fair his weary style works pretty well for 1984 but it is disconcerting having Adam read to me!

Robin I suppose could do quite a good audiobook of Lolita. What other books would you like to hear characters read, or not? I could only imagine Jill reading out recipes.

I knew the subject of Lolita would be discussed on here; from what I remember of trying to read it, it's a vile, extremely boring book and is an excuse for peadophilia. The other thing is it masquerades as a 'classic' . Notice a lack of discussion on TA. Lynda usually talks about her books doesn't she?

Leaving it behind in the Cafe? Really?

Oh was it Lolita. I could have sworn Emma said Loliturr.

I wondered that too Gruach Didn't he mention, when he was nearly driving past Pip in early labour panic, that he took the light off his car for her? Or did I imagine it.

I was waiting for his drunken father to get into his cab last night!

Pip would narrate 1930's boarding school books - she always comes across as very Jolly Hockey Sticks to me.

Ppeatfruit lolita isn't really an apologists take on paedophilia but as the thread shows some people seem to have seen it that way. Including horrifically directors and critics who thought it was a love story.
Saying "Interesting book" or "challenging" or even "paedophilic trash" in my opinion are okay reactions. But saying it's your favourite book in passing (eg without a huge explanation of why) is highly dubious (but I'd probably suspect "hasn't read it".

I've been thinking about Fairfather shmoozing the various Archers, manipulating David into saying Toby's a Good Sort Really and attempting to charm Jill - is it all about Rosie being named Archer rather than Fairbrother, do you think? Is he trying to convince them into getting Pip to change her mind?

And my GOD Tony Head is amazing!

LassWiADelicateAir · 03/08/2018 17:26

Goodness knows re the schmoozing- but it is the Brookfield Archers- why would you want to.

I was wondering about the state of Fairbrother père's finances. Why is he staying at the Snells rather than Grey Gables?

Gruach · 03/08/2018 17:29

It was lovely writing - and so unusually well delivered. Mr Head is like Tamsin Greig - they all seem to raise their game in his presence.

I’m assuming it’s all the possible motives combined. First he wasn’t happy about the omission of Fairbrother from Rosie’s name. Then he declared he’d ‘do something’ about the Archers giving Tobes a hard time. And the little faux-guileless complaint about doing things in the wrong order definitely indicates what ADASK suggested. Although really it hardly matters whether Toby and Pip get married or not. Rosie is already a Brookfield heiress.

I loved meanie Jill.

I'm afraid I didn't. I find her mithering about things that happened 60 years ago is ridiculous. As Abr1de said (about someone else!) "She might have a point but she’s sounding quite deranged".
Rosie would probably never have happened if it wasn't for Brookfield's Jill-led neurosis about the Fairbrother family.

An off duty policeman still has power of arrest. The reccomendation would be to call for back up if that is an option if the policeman had been drinking. Harrison probably hadn't had that much to drink.

I'm sure it's for real. Harrison would put himself in an impossible position if he turned a blind eye now.

Good. It was Harrison who found Freddie with drugs before, during Loxfest, wasn't it? So another reason he couldn't ignore this. Freddie needs a short sharp shock, to coin a phrase. What he's been doing is not harmless.
