And there’s some rubbish about an ex-stripper policeman?

I'm sure it was for Kate's benefit. Roy did a brilliant job as well.

Abra1de · 10/08/2018 12:33

Brian is 70. This is not entirely out of the usual pattern of downsizing. They could buy a smaller character/period property and do it up/convert it and still have change.

I’ve lived in my house all my married life—23 years, and would be sad but still able to throw myself into a new property if I had my husband with me and friends close by.

DadDadDad · 10/08/2018 14:19

I agree that Roy was brilliant - he knew exactly what Kate was after and played it completely deadpan: "no, I can't think of anyone who could help..."

MrsArthurShappey · 10/08/2018 15:37

It's storylines like this that make the non-swearing unrealistic. Everyone (possibly even JD) would be saying FFS Kate what did you think would happen?

Also, if Kate thought they were bluffing, where did she expect the money to come from? But then she doesn't ever really worry about that does she?

Bekabeech · 10/08/2018 16:23

I don't think Kate has grown up enough to see Money as a finite resource. She believes in her father's bottomless wallet.
I think JD was hamming it up talking about the 3 bed newbuilds, I'm sure Susan was talking about the executive homes (at least 4 bed in my experience) when she gave Jenny the brochures.

R4 · 10/08/2018 17:07

It's storylines like this that make the non-swearing unrealistic.

Speak for yourself. I manage not to swear 99.9% of the time and I've never sworn at a family member despite severe provocation from DS.
I deplore the current trend for swearing on TV. DH was watching a ridiculous programme the other day where they kept on heavily dropping in the F word (but only the F word). It sounded like an excitable 12 y.o. had written the script, using the only swear word he knew.

MissVanjie · 10/08/2018 17:11

“But is Jenny really facing a house move with such equanimity”

Jenny is absolutely nails. Sorry but she is. She came from relatively humble beginnings in the pub didn’t she, was a single mother along the way and has handled Brian’s shenanigans for years. She has had a lot of practice at holding her head high and ignoring the gossip. She often gets a lot of ‘silly fussy daft woman’ storylines like the interminable kitchen refit, but underneath she’s a total bad bitch and i am absolutely loving her atm. I think she’s like the sensible sister in sense and sensibility and lillian’s the one that did all the running off swooning over cads and such.

dimples76 · 10/08/2018 17:19

That conversation between Jenny and Kate was one of the best I've heard in ages. I also loved Roy's response.

Gruach · 10/08/2018 17:22

Oh Lord - now I want ‘totalbadbitch’ as my new MN name!

Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeese ...

Abra1de · 10/08/2018 17:23

One of the best episodes for ages!

Both scenes with Kate were wonderful. Oh the dawning of harsh reality.

Do all the cottages go in the sale, too? What happens to Alice?

Abra1de · 10/08/2018 17:24

My son, non listener, asked me how old Kate was. When I told him he said he assumed she must be about 18 😀

MissVanjie · 10/08/2018 17:27

Gruach

Grin

I bet that was Jenny’s username on the shortlived village discussion board that Kenton got caught trolling on

MikeUniformMike · 10/08/2018 18:59

Poor Kate. Homeless.
I like Shula.

IAmTheWifeOfMaoTseTung · 10/08/2018 19:20

Oh Lizzy! Unreasonable biassed Ambridge parent of the week in a week that includes Robin Fairbrother.

D0do · 10/08/2018 19:25

I didn't think she was that unreasonable. Lily outright lied to her about not knowing what Freddie was up to. So did Freddie. She must be wondering where she's gone wrong. Facing the business going down the pan - not been a good week at LL.

IAmTheWifeOfMaoTseTung · 10/08/2018 19:32

As far as I can gather Lily did everything she could to stop Freddie short of shopping him to Mum. Where’s her brownies and new phone? Something tells me that Freddie’s replacement isn’t a twenty quid Nokia either.

BertrandRussell · 10/08/2018 19:40

Lily only didn't tell Lizzie because Freddie said he would tell her about Russ. He effectively blackmailed her.

TigerTeatimes · 10/08/2018 20:03

Surely Robin could easily coordinate selling the wedding party a substantial amount of booze? It's a profit hit but it doesn't need to be too tricky.

Seriously, how Elizabeth convinced herself that Lily didn't know is beyond my comprehension. They're twins. She was happy in denial and has been ridiculously unfair on Lily. It's hard though Lily acts so mature and is ready to be relied upon that it's probably easy to forget that she's a kid too, and that's okay until the day it isn't.

witchmountain · 10/08/2018 20:05

Well she opted not to tell Elizabeth to avoid getting herself or Russ into trouble and to avoid having to deal with the reaction to their relationship. I’m not sure she gave it that much thought - if she had she might have realised that Freddie didn’t have much to gain from telling Elizabeth about Russ. It wouldn’t have done much to deflect from the amount of trouble he was in and if anything Lily might have got an easier ride because what they are doing isn’t illegal (since she was 18 when it started I think) and doesn’t put the family business at risk, or physically injure anyone.

In fact Lowfield suggests the blackmail started the other way around back in May - Lily said that if Freddie told about Russ, she’d tell about the drugs, at which point the dealing hadn’t escalated so far www.lowfield.co.uk/archers/weekly.phtml?20180513...

birdsdestiny · 10/08/2018 20:24

Its illegal for Russ, as far as I am aware.

witchmountain · 10/08/2018 20:25

Despite Freddie’s awful whingeing tonight I feel sorry for him as he comes to terms with how stupid he’s been.

Also feel sorry for Lily. She’s going to look back in the future and realise how little she understood about her relationship with Russ.

witchmountain · 10/08/2018 20:26

I think because she’s 18 it’s legal - he’s in a position of trust so the age of consent is 18 rather than 16?

BertrandRussell · 10/08/2018 20:28

Is it going to come out that Russ k ew about Freddie dealing?

witchmountain · 10/08/2018 20:28

Probably against the terms of his employment though!

witchmountain · 10/08/2018 20:28

I do hope so Bertrand
