So it’s taken a sad, untimely death to bring me out of retirement. How I have missed you all Flowers
Welcome to thread 86!

francis but I wasn’t on the other Archers thread and rarely am so nothing would have come up on Threads I’m On....

I’m just an Archers listener who also uses MN. I think that might be the case for others who’ve come on to ask for consideration about Giveaway Thread Titles. Also possibly why there’s the discussion about whether it’s ungracious or not.

EBearhug · 24/02/2018 10:03

What’s really disappointing was the lack of the “Archers doom” music at the end of the episode.

I think after John''s death, they didn't have any music at all, and I had thought for a moment that that is what they were going to do last night. But they didn't.

francis I think you’re teasing now, right?

Confused Just in case- it’s not the discussion on the thread, it’s the fact that the title ruins it for non-Archers Thread people as they see the plot development whether they like it or not, because it comes up on the main MN active threads page.
FiveShelties · 24/02/2018 10:09

It is not the discussion, it is the title - honesty I love the discussion.

Well. Considering that I listened o catch up, and started the thread at 21.45 it’s hardly straight after, unlike the whole of the BBC and its social media.
Re. Kenton I was just trying to get a name as quirky as Horatio. But “I sacked her, Kenton” is way way better Lillian!

francis i can’t speak for others but I don’t want or need a separate thread for discussion of the Archers three days later or whatever....

I just want to be able to browse MN active threads without seeing a big giveaway about a radio drama I listen to in the list of active thread titles on the main MN board.

I just don’t see why it’s a big deal to be asked to take into account other Archers fans who might not listen at 7pm when coming up with a thread title...

JessieMcJessie · 24/02/2018 10:22

I now listen to the Archers via Alexa as she can get me the podcast when my hands are busy making the dinner. Last night she said “Here’s the latest episode of the Archers by the way Nic Grundy dies”.

(Not really).

FiveShelties · 24/02/2018 10:23

Well I suppose it shows how passionate Archers fans are even if the last few months have been dire. The thread has never been so busy, so perhaps having a spoiler in the title is the way to go.

serialtester · 24/02/2018 10:25

Out of respect for Nic we should stop bunfighting.

U fly with Nigel and the angles hun. RIP.

Steamcloud · 24/02/2018 10:26

Agree with Plimsolls it's because the thread title appeared in Active threads.

To be clear; I am very grateful for these threads which I dip in and out of from time to time and the lively discussion they contain. It is possible to be grateful and a bit miffed about the spoiler appearing in 'active' threads. I certainly hope that is not ungracious.

(And for the record; I regular take turns in volunteering to lead a very long-running thread in housekeeping, so not all of us are shirkers in that respect!)

swimminginthesea · 24/02/2018 10:27

It doesn't solve the issue if the op of the live-listeners' thread carries on putting spoilers in the titles, does it? They can still show up in most active.

No one's arguing about the discussions themselves, the issue is the titles.

birdsdestiny · 24/02/2018 10:30

Did they not do something weird with the music though? It seemed to go on for ages. I think choosing nic to be deaded was actually quite genius scriptwriting for a change. It will affect many major characters. Will it be the last straw for Jenny, she has just found out that Brian poisoned the land, now he has indirectly killed Nic ( I am sure that is how Will will portray it when he runs into Brian). I have just realised I would quite like Jenny to leave Brian.

R4 · 24/02/2018 10:35

I just want to be able to browse MN active threads without seeing a big giveaway about a radio drama I listen to in the list of active thread titles on the main MN board.

As Pseudo said, this thread wasn't started until 21:49, which is 2½ hours after the programme was broadcast. If you had time to aimlessly mooch about MN on active threads then you had time to CatchUp for 13 minutes.
Priorities, people!

Isadora2007 · 24/02/2018 10:35

Exactly. It’s the title not the content we are upset (and by upset I mean mildly pissed off by- not heartbroken and bereft) by.

I’m glad many people seem to see our point- and yes I would have been very annoyed also by the bbc posting about her death before the episode even aired!

The point is the death was unexpected so how could we avoid something we had no idea had happened? I don’t read the Archers thread if I’m not up to date- but when the title has a major plot detail like naming the character who has died and that thread is active in the MN main page then how could I avoid it???

Just consideration for titles, that’s all we were asking for. And many seem to think it’s fair enough moving forward. Thanks.

Gruach · 24/02/2018 10:39

I have just realised I would quite like Jenny to leave Brian.

Fair enuff- but the only person who would suffer is Ruairi, and he really doesn’t deserve any more disruption in his life.

Vango · 24/02/2018 10:40

Didn’t someone say yesterday that they drove past The Mailbox this week and there’s a massive Sepsis Awareness billboard outside? Eyes on the ground at all times people!

Unhappy timing for a new thread. Point taken. Rarely happens and not deliberate.

R4 · 24/02/2018 10:41

The point is the death was unexpected

No, it wasn't. We all knew she had sepsis, even if Willyum didn't. It was left as fairly serious on Thursday night, death was a definite possibility.

plimsolls · 24/02/2018 10:43

I wish! SmileMy evenings are sitting with falling asleep child/reading before bed/ breastfeeding baby etc. Can’t listen to audio as too disruptive! I get to the Archers as soon as I can reasonably actually listen to something which is the morning after!

LillianGish · 24/02/2018 10:44

Agree that killing Nic was genius scriptwriting - we won’t miss her, but ramifications will be huge.

CaraBosse1 · 24/02/2018 10:47

Just agree not to put spoilers in thread titles. It's not that difficult.

LillianGish · 24/02/2018 10:50

Plimsolls you have just reminded me I used to timetable breastfeeding my babies with listening to The Archers - I used to shut myself in the bedroom and listen uninterrupted. It’s probably the only time I’ve ever listened religiously at 7pm (admittedly that was before catch-up existed and in truth I was listening at 8pm as living in France on Long Wave when 2pm broadcast was very often ditched in favour of the cricket! How much easier life is today).

DadDadDad · 24/02/2018 10:51

Please can we move on from the discussion of the thread title? Clearly, it's caused irritation to some people for understandable reasons, while others see it as fair game. We get a new thread every three to four weeks, so it's going to be rare for a new title to coincide with a "big" event like this.

I presume Pseudo has heard the point and will bear it in mind for the future, although it's entirely up to her whether she does anything different. She's doing this for fun and no-one can tell her what to do.

I suppose you could report to MNHQ and ask their judgement if the title should be amended (as I know they have done for spoiler-y titles in Chat).
