So it’s taken a sad, untimely death to bring me out of retirement. How I have missed you all Flowers

DDD I feel your pain! I took myself off into another room while the kids were having dinner in the kitchen. Whatever device I was listening on was about 2 minutes behind the kitchen radio. “Gone where?”, shouted my husband (hilariously...to him) just before the doctor came in to break the news Sad.

William will blame himself - for going out all day and not realising her scratch was infected - and then everyone else. Brian for making him work, Jolene for sacking her so she was sorting bric-a-brac not working in the pub, Joe for not making her clean the cut, Fallon for not noticing her flu like symptoms and sore arm, Ed and Emma for everything. Probably quite a natural reaction actually because it’s hard to believe that someone as young and fit as Nic can die from a little scratch. Eddie and Clarrie will be wonderful - they already have been.

JigglyTuff · 24/02/2018 12:08

There's no danger we'll ever hear from Jake and Mia ever again. Poppy won't speak until she's 18. After all, Ben's been locked in a cupboard for the last 3 years and he's doing his GCSEs!

Re sepsis, did it used to be called septicaemia? Has name been changed to reflect the fact that as a consequence of blood poisoning, which is the literal meaning of septicaemia, all the organs fail?

I gather it is very easy to get it if you neglect basic hygiene over wounds, i.e. not cleaning them thoroughly as soon as possible and not regularly changing the dressing. You need to keep an eye on even very minor cuts, scrapes, grazes, anything where the skin got broken, to check all is healing as it should. If it gets angry and inflamed and especially if a red line starts showing under the skin leading away from the cut/abrasion, you should go to a doctor to see if you need antibiotics.

So, I missed all the episodes over half term.
I heard Thur pm (Brian admitting he knew about the contamination all along)
I heard Fri pm

I have also gathered that:
Susan has been promoted (presumably due to stealing the small pots idea?)
Nic was sacked from The Bull (why?)

Have I missed anything else of extreme importance?

LillianGish · 24/02/2018 12:18

Neil has been offered a job managing the new pig unit by Justin with. £55,000 salary.

As I google understand it: sepsis is the poisoning of the blood, septicaemia is the body's response to sepsis.

ppeatfruit · 24/02/2018 12:20

Yes I thought it was called septicaemia too Gasp I reckoned it was just an easy word for the general population (spell checker refused my attempt at hoi poloi) to remember .

The best antiseptic IME is Tea Tree ess. oil. I cut myself with a rusty saw (trying to remove the base of a christmas tree) and literally poured it immediately into the wound Completely cured in a day!! No problems at all.

birdsdestiny · 24/02/2018 12:21

Dad3 you do realise your ds friends mum was actually thinking, 'oh bugger I will have to be polite and invite him in when really I just want to find out what happens to Nic, never mind I am sure I can listen to it later on'.... Smile

To add insult, when I stepped into the kitchen to meet the mum, her first act was to turn off the radio

birds has just beaten me to it! The poor Mum Grin.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/02/2018 12:25

Other way round, I think, R4. NHS page is good on this (terrifying, but important to know this stuff).

ppeatfruit · 24/02/2018 12:27

Teen Nic had been difficult with Alice in the Bull, she charged her full price for a drink which she had taken it upon herself to water down. (shame Jolene saw her Grin )

Actually I thought that publicans are within their rights to refuse to serve a visibly drunk customer. Jolene could have backed Nic up about that.

Also there was a nasty argument which became a screaming match between her and. Emma.

Francis Flowers

R4 · 24/02/2018 12:31

Oh dear. Nearly right.Blush
Never mind, it fulfilled the NHS / SW remit and made you go and look it up!

Steamcloud · 24/02/2018 12:36

FrancisCrawford sorry you had such a rotten time post hysterectomy. It sounds horrific.

The stirring comment was referring specifically to challenging posters to come up with other thread titles. And the royalty comment was not mine. Many of us have said repeatedly we are grateful for the thread. So a little unfair to conflate those things.

Moving on, I know someone who nearly died from sepsis from a scratch from a rose bush. Ridiculous that something so mundane can be the cause of something so serious.

Vango · 24/02/2018 12:37

Nic had been difficult with Alice in the Bull, she charged her full price for a drink which she had taken it upon herself to water down. (shame Jolene saw her)

It was Kenton who saw her then. And her motivation was only to prevent Alice drinking any more alcohol. She didn’t explain herself to Kenton very well and he was very annoyed at her.

In hindsight it will be because she was carrying the burden of witnessing Alice hitting Matt, so she couldn’t say any more at the time without getting Alice into trouble.

BrainlessDailyMail · 24/02/2018 12:37

I've had a million minor cuts & scratches (that I didn't much look after ) & that didn't fester or make me ill. I fear main effect of this storyline will be to provide unhelpful mega-fodder to the folk with health anxiety.

JigglyTuff · 24/02/2018 12:39

I don't think there was any booze at all in the drink that Nic sold Alice was there? It's one thing to refuse to serve someone; quite another to charge someone a tenner for a double and give them a glass of coke!

Much as I don't like her, I don't think she ran Matt over. But I agree that Alice is the most likely culprit, especially as she was going to drive drive the other day

TopOfTheCliff · 24/02/2018 12:40

I love the thread title FWIW

I was visiting my ancient parents and listening in the kitchen with tears in my eyes. At 7.13pm 83 year old DF comes in and was literally clapping to get my attention like a toddler. Couldn't hear a thing!

R4 · 24/02/2018 12:47

I don't think there was any booze at all in the drink that Nic sold Alice was there? It's one thing to refuse to serve someone; quite another to charge someone a tenner for a double and give them a glass of coke!

It was a cocktail. Nic didn't have the natural authority to Just Say No, so she secretly made it alcohol free. Alice didn't notice the difference in taste between alcoholic and alcohol-free. (Compare and contrast to Pip, whose drink Alice spiked at the new year because she thought Pip was being a killjoy and didn't realise she was preggers.)

DadDadDad · 24/02/2018 12:50

ppeat - I’ve no doubt you can refuse to serve alcohol, but to give someone a different drink to the one they paid for without telling them is not legal.
