It's a day past the due date, isn't it? That's why Helen was whinging on about how long they'd let her go past, as if it's another thing that's just not fair and a special torture inflicted only on women in prison instead of every pregnant woman who has ever gone over her date.

I suspect there was some significance in Helen gasping "It's really happening, isn't it?" As if there's a part of her brain that hasn't ever quite believed she would give birth to SOK.
