I don't think Ian's lack of reaction is that out of character. Thinking it about it from his point of view his best friend has chosen a man who has been openly horrible to him, hit him and deliberately caused trouble for him. He probably feels that Helen should have stuck up for him and been a true friend and she hasn't.

He may well feel he doesn't know Helen at all any more.

Of course we know much of it is due to Rob's manipulation and control but some of these things occurred much earlier when Helen still thought he was utterly wonderful. It was only after he raped her for the first time that she stopped whittering nonsense about dowries and how wonderful it was being Rob's wife.

Cripes. Not sure about this:

There was the comment somewhere above about the SWs gaslighting the listeners?

No Silent Witness but suspiciously silent friends. Are the SWs gaslighting us?

The Archers: shining a torch or gaslighting the listeners?

Or:

Let's all hide in the shepherd's hut until SOC's story goes away. ...

(But may I re-offer Confinement for the thread after next or whenever it becomes relevant?)

How long until Lynda's Shepherd Hut goes up like the hen house? #AmbridgeArsonist

I bet when it does the chimney will get the blame. It's had far too much air time not to be at the centre of a major storyline.

Perhaps you could incorporate Lynda's Flue in the next thread title Pseudo? Wink

Gruach · 18/04/2016 13:53

20 more years? Mr O'Connor, with these storylines you are really punishing us ...

stealthsquiggle · 18/04/2016 14:23

Gah. My intermittent listening tendencies have caught up with me.

What did Jazzer say to Tom? Please?

AugustaFinkNottle · 18/04/2016 14:34

Didn't Adam say that Ian was concerned about Helen? Not that he seems to have done anything constructive about it.

I see what you mean, Imbroglio. I don't think I'll be buying any of those "Badly done" shirts.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/04/2016 14:34

He didn't say anything to Tom directly. He was talking to Neil and Tom came up and overheard. It was something like 'Helen should have fiddled with his brakes or put poison in his food. Mind, she's never been one to do things the direct way. Any normal woman who wanted a baby would have gone out and found a one night stand, but not Helen...' [Kerpaow!] (That's Tom reacting.)

Star Star Star That's what Jazzer saw next.

I was delighted. I quite like Jazzer, but he was way out of order. there.

Re abusive men the Archer women have been involved with, this is more or less a cut and paste job from a post of mine in December:

Shula had a thing with Simon Pemberton for a while, but he hit her, so she ended it. Simon's father Guy was married to Shula's best friend Caroline (Simon was about their age, so that was rather tense). Later Simon got involved with Debbie and hit her too, which Shula felt very bad about, because she felt she should have warned Debbie. She supported Debbie when she went to the police. He was prosecuted but got off with a suspended sentence or a small fine. Guy was disgusted by his son's behaviour, IIRC. Shortly after that he had a heart attack and that left Caroline a widow. Simon sold off the Estate to Borchester Land and has never come back to Ambridge.

Shula then had a fling with Doc Locke in spite of the fact that he was living with Usha and she was going out with Alistair. All very torrid!

Elizabeth went out with Nigel in a fairly casual way but then got involved with Cameron Fraser, who had previously gone out with Caroline. Cameron was a chancer whose business ventures went badly wrong, losing a lot of people a lot of money (including Caroline and Marjorie Antrobus). He prepared to flee the country. Elizabeth wanted to go with him - moral compass completely broken, apparently - and he said OK, but abandoned her at a motorway service station. She was pregnant and decided to have a termination. She got together with Nigel after that and of course eventually married him.

Debbie had an on off thing for years with her university lecher lecturer Simon Gerrard, eventually marrying him, but that ended in divorce. She was also involved with Simon Pemberton (see above) and (I think) Richard Locke, when he was keen on The Sealed Knot and before he got together with Usha.

That's probably all about as clear as muc! Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/04/2016 14:42

... or even mud. Blush

stealthsquiggle · 18/04/2016 14:46

Thanks, Gasp0de. Out of order, yes - but at least suggesting that Jazzer believes that Helen would have been justified in doing Rob in? Tom would be better off sacking his grandmother..

Thanks, Bore and Gasp0de. I could remember Cameron F as a uni friend used to listen and we were flat sharing through all the Lizzie abortion stuff, but it was the Simon(s) I was a bit hazy on.

Love it Pseudo, love it, especially with the undertones of mental health issues subtly referring back to Helen.

TeatimeForTheSoul · 18/04/2016 16:11

De-lurking to say, brilliant title Pseudo Grin

R4 · 18/04/2016 16:14

You are so good at thread titles pseudo!

I agree with MOUMOO's analysis of Ian. Helen has been a rubbish friend to him and has enthusiastically thrown her lot in with a homophobe. Why should Ian be loyal or forgiving (beyond being polite at family-wide gatherings)? He's probably quite pleased that there is a distance between them and he doesn't have to do any explaining or justifying of her behaviour.

AugustaFinkNottle · 18/04/2016 16:16

Excellent title, and a nice focus on a much more TA-type storyline.

Abraid2 · 18/04/2016 16:47

Even so, Ian always seems a very loyal sort, standing by people, like Adam, who was all but unfaithful to him.

He's got to be worried about Helen, piecing things together, remembering the race where ROb was so aggressive towards him physically.
