Wishful thinking. I think she's in it for the long haul Sad

OP posts:

All these random single old women and random single young men knocking around Ambridge. Maybe the first booking for the new village hall will be a Cougars Night?

Gruach · 23/09/2015 14:31

The widows are hardly random though. Three of them are part of the major landowning families in Ambridge. They must be expected to get old. Grin

I never say anything good about SOC - but I actually find the focus on elderly people rather satisfying, at least in its intentions. The execution (burnt biscuits) is sometimes rather off but I do like it when they take action or exercise their financial or emotional power.

2rebecca · 23/09/2015 14:58

They're all a bit doddery and frightened of the dark and incapable of living alone in their own homes though. Not a very feminist view of ageing. Ambridge needs a sheltered housing complex.

ppeatfruit · 23/09/2015 15:13

I agree with Gruach So some old people are frightened of the dark, only Chris actually, old age comes to us all you know 2rebecca Chris was a bit of a goer in the 6os.

ppeatfruit · 23/09/2015 15:14

And god save us from effing cougars Grin purleeese don't put that idea in the SWs heads Grin

2rebecca · 23/09/2015 16:25

Jill was frightened of staying on her own as well once Phil died. It seems to be a TA theme that all elderly women have to be unable to cope when their husbands die.

2rebecca · 23/09/2015 16:26

Apart from the ones that killed them!

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/09/2015 16:40

Lilian did a bit of cougaring pre-Tiger though. Think it was after her facelift.

Didn't Kirsty or Brenda (forget which) nick one of Lil's young men (or vice versa)?

Joskar · 23/09/2015 17:08

Title: But by the Grace goes Jill (to Lower Loxley)

TopazRocks · 23/09/2015 17:26

Wasn't it Blessed James who was nicked temporarily by Brenda? Though I can't for the life of me recall who she nicked him from. Lil wasn't pleased though - probably though laTucker was a tad common for her son. And that seemed to be reflected later in the working relaionship of Lil and Bren. Mind you, they were both quite tacky - caught DTD in the bed of Hayley and Roy. B and J I mean. I've always thought of Halyley like my SIL Smile- I'd imagine if she found anyone in her bed, she'd have to buy a new one before she ahd another night's sleep. And disinfect eh room proably. Of course things ahve moved on since for poor Hayley.

I am enjoying TA in a half-hearted way. I liked Hester's revelation - a good use of dosh IMO having Hester voiced. Smile

Obvs Toby trouble will flout the 'exclusive' agreement. There has to be a reason for this strange detail, as others have said. He will of course go behind hsi brother's back and annoy him. Kind of find that whole story a bit yawn-worthy. But always something annoying in TA.

I liked Saturday's play too. It liked Godfrey's line about why did Grace's actor need equal pay when she hada husband with a good job. In Birmaingham no less.Kind of sums up how awful it was for women back then.

TopazRocks · 23/09/2015 17:29

Sorry my spell check has gone off. No idea why. It just randomly pisses me off I fear.

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/09/2015 17:45

Not just Blessed James, before him Brenda nicked Lil's toyboy Scott

www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thearchers/entries/723be6b7-4d33-3d36-ab92-affb9dba39f6 Grin

Still haven,t managed to find time to listen to Saturday,s play

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/09/2015 17:47

I do know the difference between commas and apostrophes Blush

The sodding ipad doesn,t though

TopazRocks · 23/09/2015 17:59

YES, Scott. I do remember now. That was what upset Lil most of course. Brenda was a bit of a taker in her yoof.

selsigfach · 23/09/2015 20:23

So Helen is happy for Our Henry to be adopted by Knob now? Idiot.

Gruach · 23/09/2015 20:32

Not at all. She was hoping her DM would give her a reason why it shouldn't happen.

EBearhug · 23/09/2015 20:49

Yes, I think she was quite relieved to find it could be a long and involved process, with lots of background checks - all those past things she's suddenly wondering about and what the truth really is.

Welshwabbit · 23/09/2015 21:29

The Jenny/John Tregorran murder plot is ridiculous, but I LOVED the whole discussion of the Cards on the Table plot and sub-plot. Accurate in every detail!

CuttedUpPear · 23/09/2015 22:26

Aw thanks ppeatfruit.

LillianGish · 23/09/2015 22:48

I got the feeling Helen was looking forward to all the adoption investigations as much as we are.

InimitableJeeves · 23/09/2015 23:26

Pat gushing about how wonderful it would be for them to be a real family unit obviously upset Helen. I suspect she was reflecting how, in a real family unit, husbands don't rape their wives.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 24/09/2015 01:40

I agree. She is hoping it takes so long it never happens. However, given that she now seems very certain she doesn't want him for H's dad and she doesn't want any date nights, what exactly is she waiting for??

They don't have kids. She has a place to go. She has a job. She doesn't love him. She can just walk out.

Usually it is money, or kids, nowhere to go or doubt/hope/ love that keep women in these sitiations i.e. they doubt their own version of events. But Helen seems very certain. And she doesn't seem infatuated with him anymore. So why stay? Other than a plot device.

The sws need to give us something to explain why she isn't walking now.

He's a wrong un and she knows it.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 24/09/2015 01:40

But was the quesiness pregnancy?

Gruach · 24/09/2015 07:26

Dunno about the queasiness. But she almost certainly does still love him - or at least the idea of him (and them); you can't just switch off the emotion because you discover the person to be the devil incarnate.

Why doesn't she walk out? Hmm ... She can't quite believe things aren't as she imagined they would be. And she can't trust her own judgement because she's gouged out most of her brain and handed it to him on a plate over the past couple of years. Pride. Shame. Fear. No stomach for a fight.

It's so dreadful; she thought she'd found a Daddy for Henry and would never have wanted to deprive the child of that - but now she's realised that Rob is intent on taking Henry over ...

She so needs Kirstie ...

BYOSnowman · 24/09/2015 07:56

She can't leave due to shame. Leaving the marriage so soon, having spent so long building him up to everyone. She's ashamed and embarrassed (unjustified obviously). She doesn't think people will believe her. Pat reinforces that with her positivity about him (personality transplant for pat though!).
