I was thinking the same thing icimoi

I agree with PPs who say Piggoi has no particular reason to be lonely. So maybe she is depressed? Might be quite an interesting storyline; a person from a generation that doesn't find it at all easy to admit to any kind of mental illness, exhibiting absolutely classic DSM diagnostic criteria for depression and flatly refusing to seek any kind of medical help.
Or she could just be reviewing her life and realising that it doesn't amount to the proverbial hill of beans, despite the fact that she managed to snare a rich widower who was, for no good reason anyone else could see, completely besotted by her.

stilllearnin · 05/07/2014 18:15

Hmm...yes there are people who only see the meals on wheels driver but is that a cliche? Seeing a friend every day is not a substitute for mattering to someone. It's not an obvious loneliness but I think it's spot on. My gran was really active - out to a planned activity every day, but complained of being lonely. It has given me some food for thought. My mum used to get cross that she complained about it - but I can see that was her not being able to help enough. Now back to the extra curriculum nookey!!

PetulaGordino · 05/07/2014 18:17

Interesting bluestocking. My Grannie was diagnosed with depression when she was in the very early stages of depressi

PetulaGordino · 05/07/2014 18:21

FFS

GM was diagnosed with depression in the very early stages of dementia. It was as she was beginning to realise what she could no longer manage. It was separate from but connected to the dementia.

I don't think they will do another dementia storyline, but interesting to see where they go with this

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 05/07/2014 18:23

Agree that it's not about being able to get out and about or having people who pop in.

It's the loneliness of eating meals alone, watching tv on your own before bed with no one to talk to etc

As its the loneliness of losing your life partner and suddenly not having that person who really knows you

PetulaGordino · 05/07/2014 18:35

Yes I can see that. Especially if you feel like those who are coming round or helping (like J and L) are squeezing you into a busy schedule and you might be a burden

GypsyFloss · 05/07/2014 21:01

Thanks for the warning Zero Grin

stilllearnin · 05/07/2014 22:49

zero they are playing with us Smile

Peggoi's story is another juxtasposition thingy.
Tom has gone. Tony's reaction is to moan about extra physical labour; Peggoi's reaction is to grieve for her loss of purpose (being the mentor / silent partner / brains-behind-the-business[in her dreamsHmm]).
All the time we thought that Tom was sponging off his gran, it seems that the reality was that his gran enjoyed being exploited needed and involved.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 06/07/2014 19:16

The Archers is on in the kitchen atm (I wasn't deliberately listening, honest) & I could have sworn Ian just said 'Madam didn't come to the wedding' Grin

(Listening to flouncy Adam that sounded exactly right!)

New thread soon?
Do we have a title?

What about "ROB THE KNOB IS STILL MARRIED, YOU KNOW, SWs!" Hmmm?

toldmywrath · 06/07/2014 22:35

Hurrah I've caught up with the thread & film. What a cultured lot we have on here! Was it R4 who mooted "rob exeunt pursued by bear" and Petula used the term passim (I love a bit of Latin, me)
Someone else using Keats & Shakespeare references & juxtapositions here there & everywhere (or passim!)
Thank you for your comments one & all. Biscuit

OddFodd · 06/07/2014 22:41

Listening again to the omnibus I was struck by how utterly crass it was of Piggoi to be moaning to Christine whose son barely gets a mention and who has been widowed for years. No grandchildren, no children visiting her and taking her out on a daily basis.

I might be a little more sympathetic if I liked her I suppose!

So glad the kitchen is finished. I hope the gloating doesn't last as long as the 'comedy' storyline

stilllearnin · 06/07/2014 22:55

had to stop halfway through tonight as a neighbour arrived (!!!) But what on earth was the point of the kitchen story line? unless Brine is to suffer a kitchen related injury from the dodgy workmanship a la Casualty? I'm not really getting Ian and Adam at the minute - is there a problem?

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 06/07/2014 23:35

tmw has reminded me of something. I wonder if the SWs did in fact christen Ursula after (in both senses) Nicholas Lezard's Shakesperian romp / Archers review (and our subsequent thread title.)

Definitely agree that Bluestocking's pseudo-Betjeman is pure poetry!

polyhymnia · 07/07/2014 10:21

Would be 'exit Rob ...' of course, not 'exeunt' as he's singular ( though not, as pointed out, single).

R4 · 07/07/2014 10:53

I would like to point out that I posted 'exit' [polishes pedant badge] but spent so long getting my Latin conjugation right that I then posted 'followed' instead of 'pursued' [glad I've had a chance to post that erratum, it's been bugging me Blush]

agree bb re pat and knowing what BL is up to - surely that's what the notice of planning application is for anyway?!

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 07/07/2014 14:17

I hunk Justin is the rejected love child of a senior archer who is trying to wreak revenge on the village that slighted him.

Icimoi · 07/07/2014 14:25

I see all that, but if the SWs were going to do that storyline they should have done it some time ago, when Jack went into The Laurels. It's difficult to swallow the sudden decline when her situation hasn't changed.

Part of me wonders if it's tied in to Tony and Pat telling her, rightly, that she wasn't included in the family meeting about the future of the farm and realising that, after her spectacular misjudgement re Tom, she's no longer regarded as the wise old sage of the family.

Selks · 07/07/2014 14:46

I've not listened for the last three weeks due to holidays etc...have I missed anything crucial?

I've gathered that the kitchen is now finally in. Anything else? Ta.

Icimoi · 07/07/2014 18:24

Piggoi's cat died, she's now feeling very lonely. Christine back on the scene visiting her amongst other things.

Knob pushed Hell into employing an assistant. As a result she took an afternoon off and was in when Knob's mother phoned trying to get hold of him and knew nothing whatever about Hell or the engagement. Knob talked his way out of it with Hell, as per.

David had bonfire where he burned a guy looking suspiciously like Justin, Charlie complained, David told him to eff off.

Jennydahling wrote and article campaigning against the road, Charlie tried to tell her off about that, she told him to eff off.

Fallon went out with PC Plot, pushed into it by Alice. But then she took massive offence because she thought he'd blown her out, only for it to turn out that he was (natch) looking for a missing child, so now things are progressing.

Tony talked Neil into helping out with the pigs, Sooosan said he should only do it if he was officially in charge, Neil didn't insist on it, Neil's in the doghouse.

I've missed a couple last week, someone else can probably fill you in.
