Have I irrationally fallen in love with this property?

If I were free to move, I would view this house tomorrow. Bearing in mind

  1. I'd be happy to move to Beckenham
  2. I like a modern house, I will never live in another Victorian terrace
  3. We want to downsize
  4. We would have money to spend on certain improvements

I'm feeling a bit frustrated that we can't go for it, so please point out the downsides so I don't feel so bad!

It looks unattractive to me from the outside
and the inside is utterly forgettable

andanotherproblem · 02/11/2025 19:39

I really don’t see the appeal, could have much nicer for that kind of money

Overdonecabbage · 02/11/2025 19:39

It’s been on the market for 6 weeks
so im not alone in feeling…. Underwhelmed (understatement)

Hatty65 · 02/11/2025 19:40

Goodness. We have very different taste.

I would be unhappy to be offered that as a council house, OP. It's hideous. (And massively expensive compared to where I live)

HS20000 · 02/11/2025 19:41

I think it's a very cool looking house with a lot of potential but renovation are expensive and involve project management faff.

Out of interest what don't you like about Victorian terraces? Just ahead of starting to look at places.

thedevilinablackdress · 02/11/2025 19:43

I like it. The wood features and the window proportions.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/11/2025 19:43

Yes, it's not beautiful from the outside granted Grin

Think of all the heat lost through the hole in the dining room ceiling!

But otherwise I quite like it. It looks low maintenance which I like

Hoolihan · 02/11/2025 19:43

I love it. So cool.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/11/2025 19:43

Yes, it's not beautiful from the outside granted Grin

And internal is forgettable
nothing special about it in the slightest
and clearly it’s not exactly flown off the market

Dearg · 02/11/2025 19:44

Well, contrary to previous posters, I think I could really love that house. 1970s vibe. I could really enjoy renovating and furnishing that.

If it speaks to you why not view it ?

Branleuse · 02/11/2025 19:44

I quite like the 70s retro style inside. It would suit one of those sunken conversation pits.

Overdonecabbage · 02/11/2025 19:45

The view from the kitchen is a row of garages

Overdonecabbage · 02/11/2025 19:46

No garden except very exposed patch of grass at the front of the property

the back directly opposite a row of garages

RandomMess · 02/11/2025 19:46

Oh I can see the potential!

RandomMess · 02/11/2025 19:47

@HS20000Edwardian are delicious but the renovation and heating costs, then they are still cold despite the bills!

BumpyaDaisyevna · 02/11/2025 19:48

I’d post but I’m still reeling from the price 🤣 up here in Cumbria you’d get something amazing for that money.

I lived 10 years in Hackney so I should not be surprised but it still takes my breath away tbh.

in terms of the house and trying to put you off, I thought it’d be freezing in winter and boiling in summer and very noisy.

imisscashmere · 02/11/2025 19:48

Gosh I personally think it’s hideous inside and out and can’t understand the price 😂

Each to their own though isn’t it? Is it a good square footage for the money (for its location)?

AuthoritarianDaughter · 02/11/2025 19:48

I think the open plan downstairs would be cold and noisy. WHat would you use the first room downstairs for- is it a sitting room? Or a hallway?

I actually think the whole house would be noisy.

The two small bedrooms are small.

I can see the appeal, but I don’t think it’s a good purchase (at any price)

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/11/2025 19:48

I've lived in three Victorian terraces since 1996 @HS20000. The narrow, deep layout is annoying. The kitchen leads on to the garden, rather than the living room. The living room looks out onto the street which is crammed with parked cars and most houses don't even have a front garden any more so your view from the living room is usually your car parked on the drive.

I can't help you here because I also like it. I grew up in a smaller version of this. Those stairs and bannister are so cool! I used to sit on one stair with my legs hanging down and do my homework on the step above. As did my brother. Like built in desks!!! It needs colour and personalising but that is just paint/ wallpaper.

I'm not sure forgettable is quite the word: I have not seen many properties of that size waste that much upstairs floor space by having a great big hole in the floor so the noise (and heating) travels straight up. To me that's quite an unusual feature ...

Doggielovecharlotte · 02/11/2025 19:48

They are often turned into flats - so you’d have two sets of neighbours each side

timeforfairylights · 02/11/2025 19:49

I’m not a fan of this era, but there’s a certain pull to it.

Namechangedasouting987 · 02/11/2025 19:49

The hole is odd though.
