Have I irrationally fallen in love with this property?

If I were free to move, I would view this house tomorrow. Bearing in mind

  1. I'd be happy to move to Beckenham
  2. I like a modern house, I will never live in another Victorian terrace
  3. We want to downsize
  4. We would have money to spend on certain improvements

I'm feeling a bit frustrated that we can't go for it, so please point out the downsides so I don't feel so bad!

That could be an amazing house but it needs dressings, renovating and furnishing in the style of the era it was built in
Ive been in a similar house it was done up in late 60’s 70’s style browns and oranges it was amazing with original g plan furniture

Dollymylove · 02/11/2025 20:35

Nice enough but im a bit confused about the configuration. What's that funny hole in the ceiling?
Going off topic a little, a friend of mine had put in an offer for a similar looking house, but a 3 storey with a large rear garden, in Newcastle, for half the price 😉

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/11/2025 20:37

I like it but if never have another terrace where you have next doors stairs against the living room. I called my last neighbour Stompy.

It has. 70’s charm but for about £140,000 at the most, realistically £70,000…..I’d never pay £700,000 for it.
It’s 70’s style, with a council house style garage !

You do understand about house prices varying across the country. Do you?

Needs ALL the grass replacing

What? It just needs a bit of attention.

Lovely house built around a cruise ship atrium.

MagpiesAreBastards · 02/11/2025 20:40

I rather like it. And I am very much not a fan of 1970s style architecture. Victorian is far more my thing. I love the light and sense of space.

boxofbuttons · 02/11/2025 20:42

Love this era of house and it could be so gorgeous if decorated and furnished well (the kitchen, while clearly fairly new and fine, doesn't suit it at all....imagine something like these pictures that's a bit more inspired by the period of the house??? Would be beautiful).

Absolutely love the split level and hallway upstairs but I think it does make the downstairs layout a bit odd? But I know what you mean, it's a cool house.

It’s a terrace, the outside is ugly and reminds me of social housing not a £700k house and the kitchen and bathrooms all need replacing

Why do the kitchen and bathrooms "need" replacing?

Pl242 · 02/11/2025 20:43

In trying to put you off, and I have no idea if you’ll get this reference or not, it looks like the house the family from waffle the wonder dog live in.

Calliopespa · 02/11/2025 20:44

Newsenmum · 02/11/2025 20:22

It looks a bit awkward inside and not actually very liveable with good storage space.

I have a hunch the downstairs ceilings are very low, which is why they have sacrificed storage etc for an open hole.

Corgi2023 · 02/11/2025 20:48

I really like it. Bit pricey for me but if I was in that part of the country and wanted a new house I'd definitely look at it.

Those photos make me feel uncomfortable! I know it's sort of back as a style, but growing up in the 80's all those 70's browns... oranges, mushy pea greens and lots of formica-ish surfaces were what everyone was fleeing!

BaronessBomburst · 02/11/2025 20:50

I quite like it.
But the walls will be paper thin and you'll be woken every morning by the neighbour's alarm clock.

I could be wrong but with the layout of the bathrooms and stairs, it looks a lot to me as though it was two back-to-backs originally and since combined into one

Doggymummar · 02/11/2025 20:50

Bland as fuck

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/11/2025 20:50

Thanks everyone! Major off-puts so far is the view of the garages from the front, the flat roof and the service charge. This is all making me feel a lot better Flowers.

I grew up in this area. This bit by the high street is not that great. Parking and traffic is terrible round there. Noise and drunk people from the high street always hanging around.
Mid terrace properties of that build type are noisy and have thin walls.
Garden looks small and for bromley/beckenham its absolutely tiny. Gardens in the area are usually massive.
You cant do much work on it, extend or go up in the loft as its a mid terrace with not room and land.
School catchments for there is not great.
I would be looking at west wickham, hayes eden park.
I personally would not want to live in that part of beckenham.

Many, many 70s houses are terrible quality with tiny rooms. Not a good decade for house building, on the whole!

Nope, looks like I'm wrong about that. Google maps shows huge ponding on the flat roofs though, leaks waiting to happen

BluTangClan · 02/11/2025 20:58

I live in a similar style house at the moment (but smaller) and love that style of property. I love the stairs and bannisters, and it's crying out for someone to sympathetically furnish it and update the kitchen and bathroom.
The bathroom vents onto the landing.

Seems overpriced for what it actually is. I'm not familiar with prices in the area, but live not too far away in the Sutton area. But I like it. I think it's a Marmite house.

Flat rooves can be a pain, it looks like they've been renewed recently all at the same time. This looks like a monopitch roof (slopes to the back of the property.
I'd be interested to see how that was arranged/financed.
Residents associations seem to be more trouble than they're worth too.

MintDog · 02/11/2025 20:58

Yes?

Where I live, that would be considered social housing and not in a very nice area at alll. For £700k you can buy a beautiful 5-6 bedroom house, detached, overlooking sheep!

Oh I agree - I live in a terrible quality 70s house myself 😅I do occasionally yearn for a solid hundred year old house. But some of the mid-century-ish features (massive windows, open staircases, split levels, wood cladding) etc I'm very fond of. I look at this house all the time (obviously built a bit earlier, but one of the first of this style built - it clearly took a while for the style to filter down to normal-person-houses!)
