Have I irrationally fallen in love with this property?

If I were free to move, I would view this house tomorrow. Bearing in mind

  1. I'd be happy to move to Beckenham
  2. I like a modern house, I will never live in another Victorian terrace
  3. We want to downsize
  4. We would have money to spend on certain improvements

I'm feeling a bit frustrated that we can't go for it, so please point out the downsides so I don't feel so bad!

I quite like it as I love 60's / mid century houses .
This one is a bit enclosed though.
I once saw a mid century listing (somewhere around Chichester area I think) and it had a swimming pool in the middle of the house . The look was all 60's style wood and not all glass and chrome.
But £700 K!!! You should have a look at what you can get in Northumberland for that.

Did the OP say she wanted to live in Northumberland?? Honestly. I mean maybe we should start looking at Mull or Bradford and see what she can get for £150k there!

GoodVibesOnly21 · 02/11/2025 22:25

It’s really not a house I’d normally like but I actually really like it. Not enough to move out of my Edwardian semi though!

I can't help you here because I also like it. I grew up in a smaller version of this. Those stairs and bannister are so cool! I used to sit on one stair with my legs hanging down and do my homework on the step above. As did my brother. Like built in desks!!! It needs colour and personalising but that is just paint/ wallpaper.

I like it too. My cousins had a house very like this internally.

bozzabollix · 02/11/2025 22:31

I love a mid century house and live in one myself. It’d be fun to renovate sensitively.

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · 02/11/2025 22:34

I love modernist architecture, which I realise is Marmite, so I do “get” it. The only downside for me would be the fact that it’s not detached.

barskits · 02/11/2025 22:43

We live in a house with tiles on the front wall. It is cold. And you can't have cavity wall insulation fitted because of the tiles.

It looks like the street where they filmed Waffle the Dog

I thought that!

Tigerbalmshark · 02/11/2025 23:11

I like it but they are ten a penny in south London. Whole estates of them around Herne Hill/Dulwich. I assume Lambeth council built all their council houses to the same plan in the 60s.

Overdonecabbage · 03/11/2025 07:44

What you could buy with £700k in… Somalia OP!

😆

And they are extremely popular. Don't stay on the market long.

softstone · 03/11/2025 09:21

The service charge would put me off but I think it has huge potential to be really cool and different. I'd love a project like that.

TheAlcott · 03/11/2025 09:35

Love love love a 60s / 70s house. I see the appeal, OP. I could swish down that staircase in a kaftan with a Babycham in hand anyday 😎

But it needs work, it would probably have terrible (ie non-existent) insulation, noise issues and the flat roof would spook me. Not to mention the service charge...

I have no idea why people post details of completely different houses hours away in completely different environments just to make a tedious point about house prices. Plenty of us like mid-century properties and don't want to live in a field, ta very much.

crappycrapcrap · 03/11/2025 09:37

The outside is awful. I was pleasantly surprised by the inside and the garden but it really wouldn’t be my dream house. I don’t know the area but if you have spare money I would look to increase your budget if you can.

housethatbuiltme · 03/11/2025 09:53

My in laws house was built with the full floor to ceiling wall windows like that as was every house on their 1960s estate.

NONE of them still have those windows now.

Everyone has ripped them out and bricked them up into normal sized window because apparently it was like a cross between living in and aquarium (feeling constantly on display) and a sauna/fridge (freakishly unrelentingly hot in summer, basically turns the whole room into a greenhouse/conservatory and cold in winter).

I also imagine they will now a days be a very expensive PITA to replace in those sizes if need too.

Papricat · 03/11/2025 09:59

Absolutely stunning, a real 70s gem.

Well, they aren't though are they? None of them in HH and Dulwich that I know of (and I have seen plenty) have this unique internal layout. And in Herne Hill and Dulwich they are about £300,000 more to buy, but we are wanting to downsize not only in terms of space buy also to pay into our pensions.

For example this one https://www.hamptons.co.uk/properties/20460079/sales/A1NQ500000K4HR1IAB#/

£300,000 more and not even in Dulwich or HH. If you can find something similar to my op house for a similar price but in a London postcode within 3 miles of Dulwich, I would love to see it!

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 03/11/2025 10:21

Someone needs to get in there and rehang some of these curtains. Attention to detail !

No, I can't! Sad. Our house isn't ready to go on the market. I don't know why I keep posting about it Sad. I think more on the thread have liked it rather than loathed it?

columnatedruinsdomino · 03/11/2025 10:30

I nearly bought a similar house and was pondering an offer when I realised rubbish and wet washing etc had to be traipsed through the living room of out of the front door because there was no outside access from the kitchen. Also muddy shoes could only come in the front

lilybit2025 · 03/11/2025 10:37

My goodness. That house is awful. Sorry OP!

You’ve established that view over garages, paltry exposed patch of of lawn at the front of the property only, service charge.

And you still would want it anyway?

AllJoyAndNoFun · 03/11/2025 10:46

I like it- love the mid century features. I’d want to knock the kitchen into that living room to create a kitchen/ diner but other than that, it’s a good house. Bedrooms are decent for location. Two bathrooms, utility and downstairs loo. Nice little garden.

I say that as someone who lives in a Victorian house ( but like you im not wedded to them- my last house was 1950’s).
