Have I irrationally fallen in love with this property?

If I were free to move, I would view this house tomorrow. Bearing in mind

  1. I'd be happy to move to Beckenham
  2. I like a modern house, I will never live in another Victorian terrace
  3. We want to downsize
  4. We would have money to spend on certain improvements

I'm feeling a bit frustrated that we can't go for it, so please point out the downsides so I don't feel so bad!

That will have no insulation, it looks a cheap build from the 60s/70s. I thought you were showing us a modern architectural masterpiece. It’s not attractive from the exterior. And I bet the noise travels through the walls.

I like it. The wood features and the window proportions.

I agree. If you like mid century design, it’s very appealing

Gymbunny2025 · 02/11/2025 21:04

Oh yes what a beaut. My dream is to move to a 1960s house by the sea in retirement and sympathetically renovate. Not sure I’d manage in a terrace though. Too scared of noise!

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 02/11/2025 21:04

I also like it. Has a scandi vibe

Here's a link to another house in the street, with photos. They've knocked the dining room and sitting room through. I'm not keen.
There's photos of a third house on Zoopla too but I don't have a log in.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/11/2025 19:43

Yes, it's not beautiful from the outside granted Grin

Or the inside 🫣

BluTangClan · 02/11/2025 21:09

Actually, I'm wrong. As a PP said, there is ponding, so they're not mono-pitched, and can't see how they drain (they do look in decent condition though). But I'm not keen on flat rooves after having issues with our current one.

We're moving soon, to a 1930's house with a proper pitched roof (fingers crossed).

Daisrose · 02/11/2025 21:18

Funnily enough I've seen this house in the flesh!

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/11/2025 21:25

Overdonecabbage · 02/11/2025 20:59

Surely you saw all this before we pointed it out??

No I didn't, so thanks for your several posts on my thread!

Not the previous commenter, but.... 5-bed farmhouse in Ribchester (nice bit of the Ribble Valley!) for £675k here. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/160299140#/?channel=RES_BUY

I don’t like the OP’s listing
But man alive I would choose the OP’s dream home over a farmhouse in the ass end of nowhere

The knock-through works well I think.

The hole is mighty weird when you see that upstairs hallway like a gangplank. Think what a nice spacious upstairs landing with storage you could have had. Instead you'd feel like you were walking the plank every time you went to bed.

PrincessOfPreschool · 02/11/2025 21:31

I love the stairs and windows but 700 is a bit steep (and I live on the edge of London). It would also take some doing up to remove the beige/white feel bit the bones of it are gorgeous.

BoarBrush · 02/11/2025 21:35

Your op reads like AI shite with the bulletpoints. It's ugly as fuck. I also live in a ugly as fuck ex council grey box. I LOVE it.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 02/11/2025 21:40

I absolutely love it. I'm very over conventional houses and love the unusual holey room and the landing. And the room looking out to the garden is fab too.

I'd definitely go for it if I was in the area.

PrincessOfPreschool · 02/11/2025 21:41

Calliopespa · 02/11/2025 20:49

Those photos make me feel uncomfortable! I know it's sort of back as a style, but growing up in the 80's all those 70's browns... oranges, mushy pea greens and lots of formica-ish surfaces were what everyone was fleeing!

I grew up in the 80s too and I absolutely love 60s/ 70s style. I have an ercol sofa and 3 chairs!

I can't help it! It makes me squeamish. I see Austin on his shagpile carpet with his ruffle shirt!

Bluevelvetsofa · 02/11/2025 21:44

Lack of kerb appeal.
Needs new bathrooms
Lack of outside space
Droopy tattered curtains are off putting.
Funny half door at the top of the stairs.

But I like the space, the wood, rather than wood painted white on the stairs and I think it could be made to look lovely.

Daisrose · 02/11/2025 21:49

@LindorDoubleChoc @Calliopespa I loved the listing too and saw it (before it was reduced) because I was obsessed with this house which was absolutely fabulous irl and went way over the asking

https://themodernhouse.com/sales-list/the-heights/

I don't want to bash on a live listing too much but from what I remember there were a few quirks eg I think the garden was leasehold via the council and there were some restrictions like fencing, parking and whether you can rent it out in the future. I could be misremembering though! Plus it needs a lot more work than it first appears...

Karistyleaftea · 02/11/2025 21:56

I quite like it as I love 60's / mid century houses .
This one is a bit enclosed though.
I once saw a mid century listing (somewhere around Chichester area I think) and it had a swimming pool in the middle of the house . The look was all 60's style wood and not all glass and chrome.
But £700 K!!! You should have a look at what you can get in Northumberland for that.

OneTrackMindToday · 02/11/2025 21:57

boxofbuttons · 02/11/2025 21:00

Oh I agree - I live in a terrible quality 70s house myself 😅I do occasionally yearn for a solid hundred year old house. But some of the mid-century-ish features (massive windows, open staircases, split levels, wood cladding) etc I'm very fond of. I look at this house all the time (obviously built a bit earlier, but one of the first of this style built - it clearly took a while for the style to filter down to normal-person-houses!)

The garden is beautiful, but the house looks like my old primary school. We have very different tastes 😁

halfandhalfchipsandrice · 02/11/2025 22:05

Dollymylove · 02/11/2025 20:35

Nice enough but im a bit confused about the configuration. What's that funny hole in the ceiling?
Going off topic a little, a friend of mine had put in an offer for a similar looking house, but a 3 storey with a large rear garden, in Newcastle, for half the price 😉

Very useful information re cost.

halfandhalfchipsandrice · 02/11/2025 22:08

I think it has loads of potential OP. I love mid century houses. If you have the budget to renovate I'd be insulating it (for sound and energy efficiency) and removing any asbestos. Lovely square rooms.
