Have I irrationally fallen in love with this property?

If I were free to move, I would view this house tomorrow. Bearing in mind

  1. I'd be happy to move to Beckenham
  2. I like a modern house, I will never live in another Victorian terrace
  3. We want to downsize
  4. We would have money to spend on certain improvements

I'm feeling a bit frustrated that we can't go for it, so please point out the downsides so I don't feel so bad!

Yes, it's not beautiful from the outside granted Grin

And imo would need a huge amount of money spending on it

PinkPonyClubDancer · 02/11/2025 20:10

I quite like the retro interior, but I would never pick a terraced house by choice.

DustyMaiden · 02/11/2025 20:13

It has potential internally but I’d want more for that price. Hate the outside.

cherrypiesally · 02/11/2025 20:14

House aside look around at the location; that section of main road through Beckenham is a bottle neck if you are driving anywhere.
It is also on the cusp of Lewisham borough; where the secondary schools are interesting,( I say this as someone who taught there for many years). Just bear that in mind if you have kids .
However Beckenham is lovely and it is a good price for the number of bedrooms but you will pay a lot to modernise it to your taste.

You have to pay £150 a month to a residents’ association who manage all the communal stuff

Great if they are nice and sensible people. Nightmare if they are a bunch of controlling busybodies.

PrincessofWells · 02/11/2025 20:16

It has charm, I really like it.

Calliopespa · 02/11/2025 20:20

Couldn't you just buy any modern-ish house and cut a hole in the ceiling/floor?

Newsenmum · 02/11/2025 20:22

It looks a bit awkward inside and not actually very liveable with good storage space.

Yes, it's not beautiful from the outside granted Grin

Or the inside. 700 grand? Good god. Literally never in a million years.

Hellohelga · 02/11/2025 20:23

It’s not my cup of tea and very £

MiddlingMarch · 02/11/2025 20:23

The upstairs landing makes me think of one of the offices in Mad Men. You might be compelled to act out dramatic advertising related scenes.

All the bright rooms would show the dust easily.

(I love it. I used to be a dyed in the wool fan of old properties but more recently have a soft spot for 1960s and 1970s style houses)

Newsenmum · 02/11/2025 20:24

Itll get horribly hot in summer and you’ll kill yourself on those stairs.

It's my dream! I'd put parquet flooring through the entire of the downstairs, and fill the house with mid century modern furniture.
That feature in the living room is unique.
And those massive windows!

Oooh no! You're doing it wrong. I happen to have lots of mid century furniture, several beautiful teak pieces especially my dining table. You should be putting me off!

It’s a terrace, the outside is ugly and reminds me of social housing not a £700k house and the kitchen and bathrooms all need replacing

Pollypocket81 · 02/11/2025 20:27

Mould issues in bathroom and would need wallpaper/paint refreshing where damaged in bedroom. Maybe some issues with the guttering on the corner?
Front two bedrooms have street light outside (could use blackout curtains) and all the garages which could be quite noisy at times.
The Beck is behind the property which may be attractive but puts it at flooding risk, at least from an insurance point of view. https://check-for-flooding.service.gov.uk/target-area/064FWF43Becknham?v=map-live&lyr=mv,ts,tw,ta&fid=flood.064FWF43Becknham&ext=-0.037668,51.408961,-0.02672,51.413308

Overdonecabbage · 02/11/2025 20:28

I take it that garden isn’t an important criteria for you op?

CloudedBlue · 02/11/2025 20:29

It has. 70’s charm but for about £140,000 at the most, realistically £70,000…..I’d never pay £700,000 for it.
It’s 70’s style, with a council house style garage !

Blingismything · 02/11/2025 20:31

I love it. However it has a flat roof and a monthly service charge.

TattooStan · 02/11/2025 20:31

Sorry I just can't trash talk it! I can see Orla Kiehly print soft furnishings, G-plan and Ercol furniture, and Bauhaus art!

Whatsmyusername94 · 02/11/2025 20:32

Really like the inside which I didn’t think I would looking at the pic of the outside. It has potential

CrowsInMyGarden · 02/11/2025 20:32

Do you have children? The upstairs bannisters look like ladders. Mine would have been up and over them and jumping through the hole onto the downstairs sofa.. If it is an actual hole in the ceiling. I have conjunctivitis and can’t see clearly

MidnightMusing5 · 02/11/2025 20:33

It’s not April .. 🤔

Turnerskies · 02/11/2025 20:34

I don't understand why so many posters think this house is awful. It's not brilliant but not bad at all. When I last moved I originally planned to move to Beckenham and would have viewed this. £700k is a good price for 4 bedrooms.
