Have I irrationally fallen in love with this property?

If I were free to move, I would view this house tomorrow. Bearing in mind

  1. I'd be happy to move to Beckenham
  2. I like a modern house, I will never live in another Victorian terrace
  3. We want to downsize
  4. We would have money to spend on certain improvements

I'm feeling a bit frustrated that we can't go for it, so please point out the downsides so I don't feel so bad!

I can't help you here because I also like it. I grew up in a smaller version of this. Those stairs and bannister are so cool! I used to sit on one stair with my legs hanging down and do my homework on the step above. As did my brother. Like built in desks!!! It needs colour and personalising but that is just paint/ wallpaper.

AHHH this is setting off my mum-panic-alarm. What if you fell backward! I hope it wasn't at the top!

Kendodd · 02/11/2025 19:51

I quite like it.

Well it was the 70s. We kinda just got on with it. I never fell off!!!

Pandorea · 02/11/2025 19:51

It’s lovely! I like that era as well.

Yes, different days I suppose!

Needs ALL the grass replacing

Well, contrary to previous posters, I think I could really love that house. 1970s vibe. I could really enjoy renovating and furnishing that.

If it speaks to you why not view it ?

I agree, it would be lovely with parquet floor, a less horrible bathroom and a lower key kitchen plus lots of Ercol furniture.
It reminds me of the house my godmother had in the actual 70s

Sandcaaarstle · 02/11/2025 19:54

Wow! It’s so ugly on the outside I was assuming it’s got some hidden wonder on the inside!

It does not.

Zov · 02/11/2025 19:56

Not for me. No kerb appeal at all, grossly overpriced, all the heat will go from the bottom to the top through that huge hole, and it's pretty much all open plan. Too much white, awful massive glass French Windows.

No, no, and NO. Awful. 😖

(Sorry.) Blush

Rexinasaurus · 02/11/2025 19:56

Uhmmm miles away from London and 700,000. Last similar property sold for 245,000.. maybe offer 240,000

HedgehogCrisps · 02/11/2025 19:58

Looks like a solicitors office with all that wood.

deeahgwitch · 02/11/2025 19:58

I hate it. Sorry OP

AgnesX · 02/11/2025 19:59

The plumbing is bizarre. You'd have to build in new bathroom and toilet costs into your budget.

And it's a terrace, even if it's at the end of the row.

coronafiona · 02/11/2025 20:01

The pipes in the bathrooms would be annoying and dusty

ArtesianWater · 02/11/2025 20:03

Gosh, I hate it. Each to their own I suppose!

KnickerlessParsons · 02/11/2025 20:03

Never again would I buy a house where the stairs go upstairs from a room instead of the hall.
All the heat goes upstairs, and if you have children it’s impossible to get them to sleep because all the noise goes upstairs too.

ResusciAnnie · 02/11/2025 20:03

Its certainly not modern looking 🤔

Its a terrace

You will probably be able to hear the neighbours way better than you can in your Victorian house

I do like the proportions in that kind of home though.

What does this mean?

Last recent sale on the road was over £700,000. I had a quick look and I think they opened up the kitchen into the dining room, but I like that little utility area in the featured house.

Would expect it to be freezing in winter and absolutely greenhouse-esque boiling in summer. Not appealing at all!

Yeah, no, should have pointed out that we don't have children.

I've lived in three Victorian terraces since 1996 @HS20000. The narrow, deep layout is annoying. The kitchen leads on to the garden, rather than the living room. The living room looks out onto the street which is crammed with parked cars and most houses don't even have a front garden any more so your view from the living room is usually your car parked on the drive.

I’m with you on that. I thought a Victorian terrace was everything I dreamed of, until I lived in one!

Ihavepaidalotforthisstory · 02/11/2025 20:07

There is nothing I like about it but you love it and if you buy it that's all that matters.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/11/2025 20:07

It is modern for London @ResusciAnnie. Most new builds are flats or 3 storey town houses.

1970s is considered modern in housing anyway.

TattooStan · 02/11/2025 20:08

It's my dream! I'd put parquet flooring through the entire of the downstairs, and fill the house with mid century modern furniture.
That feature in the living room is unique.
And those massive windows!

And you don’t enjoy having a private garden?
Happy to overlook a row of garages at the back?
