Hello everyone, a thread newbie here!

I am currently buying my first home following divorce. I’ve had an offer accepted on a perfect little house for me and my two little boys, and am in the process of sorting all the house buying admin out. It’s very overwhelming - my husband handled all of our previous house buying so this is the first time I’m going it alone!

I pray that everything goes smoothly. It’s lovely reading everyone’s stories on here 😊

Hi all,
the main issue that was raised in my home buyers survey was moss on the roof. I have just had a quote from a roofer, who said they won’t need scaffolding and will manually clear the moss (no jet wash) and give the roof a treatment.

he has quoted £1500, which I think sounds reasonable? Still waiting for the EA’s roofer to quote for comparison, he said scaffolding would be needed. So going to compare the 2

Finally have another viewing booked this week (after 1 viewing and 1 no show in 5 weeks so far) fingers crossed with spring and easter hols coming things will pick up now. Similar to you shewasjustawishx my ex dealt with everything last time (17 years ago) so it's my first experience alone but I can't offer on anywhere until I sell as I need the house equity as a large deposit. I work full time but low wage so i wont get a very big mortgage. I hope I don't lose the house I like before I find a buyer.

Anyone else walk in to their new purchase today and think WTF have I done? SO much work!
I had fun and games actually getting in. The estate agent gave me the wrong key (who’s key I’m not sure) cue a very out of breath EA running up my road with the actual key at ten to 5…

I know... I still haven't done a thing, and already feeling very tired! We'll get some help though, as I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have made it alone. I wish I could fast forward to the moment the house will start looking homey!

gottagetthruthis25 · 31/03/2025 22:29

sitting in my new home and feeling utterly grateful for a new start with me and the kids. A mad day but thoroughly thoroughly worth it! Thanks so much for the advice everyone xx

MalcolmMoo · 31/03/2025 22:52

Just discovered this thread! We exchanged and completed today! Honestly most stressful day of my life.

We had offer accepted on ours 13th January, then offer accepted on our purchase 15th January so I can’t quite believe we made the deadline!

We had first time buyers with over £6k to save in stamp duty!!

We had to move ourselves as couldn’t find removals companies in good time, still so much unpacking to do! But so relieved to finally be in!

kirinm · 01/04/2025 09:04

Well we’ve had our mortgage valuation done and they haven’t down valued it so that’s positive. I think we are still waiting to find out if they’ll actually lend because of the two kitchens . It’s been a while since we last bought something so does anyone know if the valuation being okay = they will lend or is that two different stages?

Yes!

The house we have bought it smaller than our old house (we plan to extend) now wondering where on earth we are going to put all our stuff. The trees shaded half the garden so will need topping. It was neither as clean or well decorated as we thought it would be!

BUT the kids loved the garden, the view is amazing, it's location could not be better for us. So we have some hard work to make it our dream home but very happy with the gorgeous views and wild garden to play in.

Feelingstrange2 · 01/04/2025 12:09

I don't think any homes are as well decorated when their furniture is taken out.

Our first home in 1991 had a navy blue carpet. They took their suite of furniture and it was very dark where the sofa and chairs had been and a lighter blue where they hadn't and presumably the sun had bleached it!

All the walls had knocks and bumps on them too. Some possibly from removing furniture on completion day.

We popped up to see DS and took the carpet cleaner which was useful. The house was superficially clean but dirty deep down, so we helped him with the kitchen too.

They'd promised to fix something and hadn't! Naughty. They'd left a little cash and an apology for it. They'd given him the wrong gas supplier name! So in the chaos of untangling that out now. Otherwise all is good and he's delighted.

He's got the week off and has opened the house up and is happily bringing stuff over from.the flat, cleaning, sorting and waiting on deliveries of a bed for himself, broadband hub and a washing machine!

That's what the kids will remember.

We moved in 1979 (Dad still owns it) to a flat estate from a hilly terrace and my parents had bought us an old chopper bike. Me, my brother, and friends helping us move, had a fabulous time riding up and down the estate on it the day we.moved in!

Hoolahoophop · 01/04/2025 12:23

@Feelingstrange2 that's lovely, I remember the feeling when I bought my first house. My parents helping me with some bits then cheerfully painting the whole house a sunny yellow and building flat pack furniture with the windows open. I felt like I was living in a Katie Fforde novel and would meeting my great love at any moment 😂I loved being a home owner and even better that it was just me!

This time I have to consider everyone else! Its harder, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

magicmermaid · 01/04/2025 15:00

Does anyone have any advice when 1 solicitor in the chain is just absolutely shocking, I don't know what else we can do! Whole chain is ready to go but top of chain solicitor is just ignoring all chasing from vendor and our solicitor chasing. Call up and they say not available and no one else can assist. They need to finish final few enquiries and and then we can just go ahead and exchange. Enquiries were sent on January! Vendor has also put a huge complaint in regarding how awful they have been but still just nothing !! 😭

WimbyAce · 01/04/2025 15:15

Luckily our house is pretty uptogether and was clean. I'm not actually sure I'd have coped otherwise. I have been ill since Sat night. Have made it to my parents today to wfh. There has been a mess up with the internet, octopus was not a smooth transition either. I am just exhausted with it all. House is lovely and the garden is beautiful and warm so I know I will be fine in time, just at the moment I have crashed. Has been hugely draining mentally and physically and my body feels broken at the moment so think I just need to give myself a break!

Youabsoluteblinder · 01/04/2025 15:17

Well we completed yesterday afternoon and moved my parents last night. Removals have just left after unpacking everything. It's been so emotionally draining that I had to leave early plus I still need to pack for our holiday tomorrow.

My DH and I were thinking of moving but this experience has put me right off!

Agreed, never again, I can't do it to myself!

Enjoy your holiday!

Doornon · 02/04/2025 12:08

I am never moving again either. It’s been awful! We got a message saying oh it’s all been cleaned, by who, 3 blind mice?

The shower was so so dirty, I am traumatised by all the pubic hair! 😂

I sat on the carpet today and noticed there is foundation all over the floor so another thing to clean up.

the move was so much hard work we are broken (self moved) but this morning it looked slightly more manageable and the sun was shining so I felt happier

Oh noooooo, poor you Doornon, that’s so grim!

Feelingstrange2 · 02/04/2025 13:37

Oohhhh @doornon That's nasty!

HavenSprings · 02/04/2025 14:11

We should open another thread called 'all the things we found in our new homes left by uncivilised former owners' 😆I am dreading what's to come.

Anyway, I'm officially moving (and cleaning!) over the weekend, so it's time for me to graduate from this thread. Thank you to everyone who answered my (sometimes stupid) questions, who supported me and who managed to complete around the same time as me or is still working towards this goal. To you I wish you the best of luck! I'm sure I'll still be around. Thank you all xx

Billybobidy · 02/04/2025 14:17

Congrats to all who have moved this week! I hope to following in your footsteps in the coming months.
we received our mortgage offer today so that’s a step in the right direction 🤞🏻

Limeandsober · 02/04/2025 15:12

I’m so tired 😴. No time off work until next week when the big move over will happen so I’m trying to decorate after work.

I am living/sleeping in a tip while I slowly transfer things across.

magic wand anyone?? I just want to get it done, get into bed and sleep!

I found a bottle of piss under the sink. Seller did not move in a very good mood I’m gathering from the state of the place.

You’re joking?! I thought Doornon’s pube discovery was bad enough. Good lord!

2025willbemytime · 02/04/2025 17:43

That's disgusting. What is wrong with people? I'm so worried I won't be able to get my house clean enough for four kids that I've told my ex h he has to come and help. Believe me, I never want to see him for a second so this is a big deal.

Hoping to hear but the end of the week that the new build at the top of the chain has been signed off. If it hasn't then I'm walking away.

Doornon · 02/04/2025 19:11

Jesus a bottle of piss. Who does that?
