Does this flooring look ridiculous?

Had new chevron flooring laid today and it doesn’t look right to me. I think the chevrons don’t marry up and it just looks a bit odd. Is it because of the size of the room?

Any advice would be appreciated

What other work is this bloke doing for you because he seems to be completely incompetent. I’d be a bit worried. Maybe get someone else in. It’s hard to believe that a professional would do this

Thank you for confirming my suspicions! I’m gutted as it cost a lot of money. I hate complaining but will need to bite the bullet and complain tomorrow

Good luck! That' a shockingly bad job.
Looks like it's sections like tiles, as opposed to actual parquet flooring- that is a dizzying job.

Show them this thread if they complain, and go to trading standards if they are difficult.

They are not skilled at flooring by the looks.

It doesn't look like it's been laid in the right pattern, I don't know if this photo of ours helps at all but the chevrons are kind of staggered.

This looks like a well laid floor to me. {Your pics} scribed to the wall well.

askmenow · 30/01/2025 03:10

That's shockingly bad work OP and not to depress you further but for ammunition against the "friend of the fitter", who I believe sold this laminate to you....check out the Trustpilot reviews on this Egger flooring. Very problematic, doesn't click together well etc etc etc...Separates /comes apart...

I'd have him remove the lot and buy an alternative make. I think the "friend" has sold you a pup!!!
Demand he replaces it with better quality given this is a hallway, an area of traffic.
Your ultimate recourse is the small claims court.

This in spades...☝Fitter doesn't know what he's doing!

I sent him a message last night and explained I wasn’t happy. He basically told me the flooring would never marry up and can only be laid one way. I said that it should marry up due to the pattern, each row the lines need to be facing the same way either left or right.

He arrived this morning to do some work and I spoke to him about it. He was defensive saying he’s never known of laminate flooring to have a certain pattern to be laid in (he specialises in garage conversions but as part of that he fits flooring). He said it can only be laid one way. I explained that each pack has X amount of planks where the design is printed to the left and X amount where the design is printed to the right and that he’s just laid it in any old order. He said he’s only laid this style of flooring once before and the customer was happy with it. I told him I wasn’t happy with it and that I can’t unsee it looking stupid.

He said he was never told that it needed to be laid a certain way. I said well whose responsibility was it, because it’s not mine. He asked if I was expecting him to rip it up and relay it and I said yes of course. He said he can’t guarantee it won’t be chipped and I said well you’ll need to order more packs at your own expense!

He seems very unhappy with me but I can hear him removing the flooring as we speak. Here’s hoping it looks better this time

It doesn’t matter what other customers have said. He’s not done a good job for you and needs to rectify it

Good for you being so assertive OP. It's not easy!

He will obviously be kicking himself but the floor looks ridiculous! An untrained eye can see immediately that it’s all wrong.

If he felt he couldn’t get a chevron effect with this style of flooring he should have highlighted this to you, as should the supplier.

Totally their fault - what a botch job!

MaggieFS · 30/01/2025 10:44

Well done OP. Hope it's looking great later!

CellophaneFlower · 30/01/2025 10:55

If it can only be laid one way how come he's laid parts of it correctly? His argument makes no sense. I also don't buy that it's harder to see "when you're on top of it". You're following a pattern as you're going down - he's changed direction mid run, not just started wrongly.

I'd be getting him to rectify this then showing him the door. The fact he thinks this is acceptable would make me wonder about the quality of all his work.

JollyViper · 30/01/2025 11:04

@Chevr I'm sure it will look great when relaid, but do check his work before he leaves! (And update with a photo!)

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 30/01/2025 11:04

Good for you OP, though I'd be slightly worried about the quality of the rest of his work now.

Why does he think he's the expert if he's only ever laid it once? I've laid laminate flooring once and no way do I consider myself an expert.

Wronso · 30/01/2025 11:08

Well done @Chevr . He will be embarrassed and thinking he could have got away with it. Hope it’s looking good soon.

EasterIssland · 30/01/2025 11:30

How much is he charging you to lay? I’m getting hardwood floor and they are charging me £40/m2 to lay it down. Hope he charges you less as he’s def not an specialist

TheWorldisGoingMad · 30/01/2025 11:49

InfoSecInTheCity · 29/01/2025 18:02

I feel like I might be seeing things but haven't they laid the far left run the wrong way up?

And the bottom right.

Normallynumb · 30/01/2025 12:00

Well done for speaking up
Hopefully his defensive reaction was a sign of embarrassment.
You're not happy and he is paid to do the job correctly.

Trallers · 30/01/2025 14:04

What an embarrassing pain for him, no wonder he's annoyed (with himself!). Well done for standing your ground, and for doing it so eloquently and unwaveringly. You left him no choice! You've actually done him a huge favour if he really didn't know how to lay these, as yours is only a small room to have to re-do. Imagine the work he could have on his hands with another customer. Hopefully he'll be gracious when he sees how much better it looks done correctly.

AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen · 30/01/2025 14:13

Looking forward to seeing your newly laid floor OP

Likewhatever · 30/01/2025 14:25

Blimey OP you’re fierce! Please update when it’s done properly.

Chevr · 30/01/2025 14:34

I’m delighted to report that it has been sorted and looks much better (this photo only shows half the room, the other half of the room didn’t look any better!).

He definitely was embarrassed and annoyed with himself, which came across as being arsey with me. He’s acknowledged himself that it now looks much better and that the supplier (his friend) should have told him it was chevron flooring which needed laid a certain way, rather than just cracking on and laying it blindly like he would any other laminate flooring

Sounds like she had to be as the CF really tried talking their way out of not redoing it. Personally, I'd have been embarrassed and wanted to rip it up as soon as possible in case anybody else saw it, but sounds like they don't have any standards 🤷‍♀️

I've just looked at it again and couldn't help but laugh as he said he didn't realise there was a pattern... therefore all the bits he got right were actually just down to luck 🤦‍♀️😂

Likewhatever · 30/01/2025 14:37

So much better OP! And the fitter has also learned a new skill so he owes you one.

Cross posted. Looks great OP. I'm glad it got sorted so quickly for you.

Thanks for the update OP, well done for sticking to your guns to get it sorted.
Looks amazing !
