Does this flooring look ridiculous?

Had new chevron flooring laid today and it doesn’t look right to me. I think the chevrons don’t marry up and it just looks a bit odd. Is it because of the size of the room?

Any advice would be appreciated

Theres lots of different ways of laying herringbone/zigzag patterns but it has to be consistent, some are designed to be staggered

I would like it throughout the house, but only in traditional wood.

Narwhalsh · 29/01/2025 20:12

They’ve laid a couple of the planks the incorrect way. Is this issue the whole way through the area or just this bit?

VelvetThrows · 29/01/2025 20:53

Right, if it's laminate flooring, it should only click or fit together one way. There's usually a tongue-and-groove shaped piece on each side.

So some pieces will be printed left-to-right, and some right-to-left.

Why has your flooring fitter not sorted or noticed this?

Did you know this OP?

Did the fitter not have even numbers of each type?

Were instructions included in the going packs?

Were you there when it was done?

Thank you, that’s helpful. I was at home however I was dealing with the baby all day and expected that he would know what he was doing with regards to fitting it!

Person A fit the flooring (he is a joiner who is doing lots of work for us) and I bought the flooring (25 square metres) from his friend, person B who owns a flooring shop.

Is it the case that to cover a room requiring 25 square metres of flooring, I should have bought way more flooring than I did? In order that there were enough pieces printed right and left for my requirements? (No one told me this but a friend has suggested that might be the case)

@VelvetThrows yes instructions were included

No I think the picks should have equal numbers of each.

The fitter should have checked first and not laid the floor if there was any doubt. You should have about 10% waste at the most in any case.

Laminate can usually be taken up again and relaid off done carefully.

I'd be asking the fitter to take up what had been done, flag if there is an issue with the product (I doubt it), and reinstall it properly. This should be at his own expense and he should also replace any pieces that are damaged in the process or unusable due to already having been cut the wrong way.

Byjimminy · 29/01/2025 21:08

It's very odd. Each "row" except for the middle one, has got a change of direction in it. So that's either something printed in the pattern of the full laminate roll (which I hate to say, but a real CF supplier might argue that's what you chose - but it doesn't explain the middle row, which you could argue back!) or it's pieced together from lots of off cuts? Really sorry OP, it must be unsettling, especially as they are doing other work in your house.

Franjipanl8r · 29/01/2025 21:13

did they install it with their eyes closed?

Byjimminy · 29/01/2025 21:13

Duh, I'm thinking of vinyl roll!! With laminate there is no excuse unless they are square laminate tiles and they've just randomly mis-matched direction.

Ohnobackagain · 29/01/2025 21:31

@Chevr as others have said, it changes direction in a few random places. Other than that it would have been ok when the rest was done I think

DisforDarkChocolate · 29/01/2025 21:33

That made my eyes hurt!

Definitely laid wrong.

Lovemycat2023 · 29/01/2025 21:38

you said it was a joiner who laid it, is that usual? we have only ever had flooring done by guys who only do flooring. Isn’t a joiner a carpenter?

rwalker · 29/01/2025 21:41

The ones on the left upside down

MadeForThis · 29/01/2025 22:02

It needs to be done again. Properly.

Onlyvisiting · 29/01/2025 22:04

That's all wrong, they've swapped direction half way down some of the rows so you go from a chevron to a long diagonal line.

mdinbc · 29/01/2025 22:10

Also, the centre of the design should run down the centre of the hallway. So measure and mark it. This is a disaster!

KittenPause · 29/01/2025 22:14

It's shockingly bad

Wait, there were people involved? I assumed you'd hired a drunk dog.

Likewhatever · 29/01/2025 22:24

Don’t let them fob you off or get you to spend more money, They have laid them incorrectly. If there are pieces which are unusable because they’ve been cut that’s at their expense, not yours.

It’s a really shocking job. Take a lot of photos before they arrive, from every angle.

MaggieFS · 29/01/2025 22:28

I was wondering how on Earth someone managed to do that, but actually if it's tiles I get it. It's still obvious and shouldn't have happened but at first I thought OP meant someone had cut laminate planks!!

Delphiniumandlupins · 29/01/2025 22:36

InfoSecInTheCity · 29/01/2025 18:08

Just realised why I was confused. Why have they changed direction in the blue circled bit?

This. They've laid upside-down in a couple of places. If you look at a strip, top to bottom of your picture, all the 'planks' should be sloping the same way.

yeriknow · 29/01/2025 22:37

It's definitely been laid wrong, but if it's laminate it shouldn't be a bit job for them to take it up and re do it correctly?

Also I think the colour and design is fine for the space.

fivechairs · 29/01/2025 22:43

The highlighted laminate rectangles have been laid the wrong way.

I can't believe a professional joiner has done this. Terrible OP. He needs to make sure it's not going to cost you to replace what he's messed up.

Charlize43 · 29/01/2025 22:44

Oh this type of wood flooring (herringbone) is going to age so quickly. It would have been better to go for something more classic and less faddish.
