Looking for suggestions to rename our house. Current name is causing a lot of confusing hence the change.

characteristics of the house;

  • built in the 1800s
  • very traditional exterior
  • Set in the countryside
  • house surrounded by gardens full of flowers and trees
  • gardens include an orchard and small lake

any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Whatever you do, don't do what friends of ours did and combine names. Suekev anyone?

sidsgranny · 06/12/2024 07:42

What is it currently called that's causing confusion?

Orchard House
Rose Cottage
The Willows
Oak Cottage

These are all quite popular house names that might suit?

Tiger Lily lake.
Tiger Lily garden.

Gosh it sounds lovely! What's growing in the orchard? Peartree House? Bramley Lodge? The Apple Orchard?

The Blue Lake House?

Peony Grove? Crocus House? Daffodils?

Is there anything unusual about it? because everything you describe is quite generic to cottages. So orchard cottage seems the obvious choice. Have you looked into its history? Could it be, for example - millers cottage?

It’s very similar to an agricultural business name in the village so post/parcels are making there way there instead.

I tried oak cottage but already taken within two postcodes (which is the stipulated restriction). So feel like most common names will be hard to get.

Thank you so much for the suggestions

Never Rose Cottage. That’s the code name for the mortuary at hospital

HotCrossBunplease · 06/12/2024 07:53

A cottage with a lake? Surely a cottage could have a pond at most?

Lake Cottage seems the obvious choice

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 06/12/2024 07:53

your description of the garden reminds me of the Marvell poem so how about Marvell House or just Marvell?

It’s an apple orchard so not sure if it’s too generic?

there is a lot of elm trees, eucalyptus trees and oak trees.

thank you for your suggestions!

Agree that cottage seems a misnomer if it has a lake. Unless the lake is very rustic & natural, not part of some ornamental frontage. I’m getting visions of Pemberley.

Although we could call it “something cottage” and are happy to it’s definitely a house not a cottage
