Looking for suggestions to rename our house. Current name is causing a lot of confusing hence the change.

characteristics of the house;

  • built in the 1800s
  • very traditional exterior
  • Set in the countryside
  • house surrounded by gardens full of flowers and trees
  • gardens include an orchard and small lake

any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much to those who have provided useful suggestions - we have shortlisted 3 of them and are going to sleep on it.

A few people suggesting how pretentious it is to have a house name over a number, I would love nothing more than to not have to think about this and have a house number so the Christmas presents we have ordered and post can actually be delivered to us rather than me having to drive round looking for them. However as many rural villages experience it’s very common for the lanes to not be numbered. Thank you to those who have also pointed that out. Every home in our village has a name and none of them have been numbered. I am sure that if we even tried to request this from the local council the 3 other houses on our lane would not be happy.

mumsnet can be so supportive and useful, it’s just such a shame that a select few people are just on here to try and suggest the worst in people at every opportunity.

thank you again for those who helped, we don’t really mind what the house is called at all and just want it to be fitting to the rest of the village and it’s surroundings so you’ve really helped!

Yes the villages with names not numbers are confusing. My friend used to live in one and when we visited for the first time we couldn’t actually find their house for ages as it was a
long road of named houses. At least if you are looking for 56 you have a bit of a guide as there’s 38 and 42 so we are heading in the right direction.

Chocolate Box House
Picturesque House

There is a house near me in Spanish style called, in wrought iron letters, Quitapenis. I'm absolutely not joking.

Are you new(ish) to the house? Please bear in mind that a name change could be a whole lot more hassle than a few misdelivered parcels. Your house has been standing there for 200 years and everyone in the locality knows it as the name it is. Royal Mail and all the delivery firms access your house by its existing name and it could be a big upheaval to change. You could talk to the business with the similar name and make a plan for misdelivered parcels.

We considered a house name change for about 5 minutes when we moved into our house with a rather generic farm house name since half of the village houses use the same name in slightly different ways eg house, cottage, croft, steading, school house, numbered houses etc but, upon reflection, felt it was a slightly arsey thing to do to a traditional farm house in a traditional village and in breeze the newbies and give their, new to them, 200 year old house a new name. It confuses local history too.

Just my little penny's worth to add to the mix, no judgement if you decide to do it. Good luck choosing something.

Happy days when our road was finally numbered. Though a lot still know it by its name, numbering is so much easier. You can tell who doesn’t live in a village on this thread.

I like Elm House but love pp suggestion of Paradise House.

Hector's house..70s kids will know the programme.

Name changes have to be legally registered with local council I think. To make sure emergency services etc have you in some kind of official record. This ensures less duplication.

People never like change so there will be moaning locally whatever you do, so may as well just go for it OP. You can pick a new name if you want one.

I don't understand all the snide comments. Boasting? Histrionic?

Thought this was a property discussion forum. It's an interesting topic and OP gave a list of things to factor in. Should she have said "I need a name for my house but I don't want to tell you anything about it." ?

Some rude and unhelpful posters on here.

I agree, very rude, juvenile and bitter.

OP's question is actually quite interesting.

CurrentHun · 11/12/2024 07:32

Anyone can add a name to their numbered address if you’re reading about this and feel you’re missing out. I like the individuality of naming a flat or house. it’s a few quid to the council and job done. You can still use the numbers but an extra name too is a nice thing I think.

The reasons behind names can be interesting and are not always happy which is why it’s not a given I would go back to an old name unless I loved it. I’ve seen houses named by owners after war related places for example. So that experience clearly meant a great deal to them, but I might want to lay that kind of thing to rest as a new resident.

Kazzybingbong · 11/12/2024 08:58

Saltburn is a lovely name for it.

TroysMammy · 11/12/2024 09:04

Oakhurst?

Personally if I needed a name for a house it would either be Stuffem Hall or Fork Hall 😃.

It’s an apple orchard so not sure if it’s too generic?

there is a lot of elm trees, eucalyptus trees and oak trees.

thank you for your suggestions!

Koala cottage?

The lake house

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 11/12/2024 21:40

I'd love to change the name of my house (also in a village where no one has house numbers), but DH is very resistant.
I like romantic names, but it would need to be short as new house name signs are quite pricey!

Tretigerlily

Tre being settlement in Cornish, so combine with your surname. Like ours is! We'll, first owners surname, not ours.

I've always liked An Skyber, but I think that's best for barn conversions

I love this thread.

I'd like something spooky

Dark Waters (well most lakes are green at some point)
Hanging Tree's (any of your trees got low branches over the house)

Our house could be Riverdell as we have a river at the end of the garden and are on the slope of the hill amongst the trees. But that's a bit fairy. So would more likely go for Smugglers Rest as the house is down a small river off the main coast, is hidden and perfect for Bandits! In reality we are 32b as we are plonked at the end of 32s garden sold when they ran out of money.

TeaAndStrumpets · 12/12/2024 10:06

@Hoolahoophop wow you have a lot of options there! I do love a smuggler theme.
