Looking for suggestions to rename our house. Current name is causing a lot of confusing hence the change.

characteristics of the house;

  • built in the 1800s
  • very traditional exterior
  • Set in the countryside
  • house surrounded by gardens full of flowers and trees
  • gardens include an orchard and small lake

any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I walked past a Honeypot Cottage yesterday and thought that sounded cute

Never Rose Cottage. That’s the code name for the mortuary at hospital

Also, according to my late father, the area of a WW2 battleship or cruiser which gay naval ratings claimed as their territory. Different times...

Lots of these are really twee, Op. Use the original name.

I'm intrigued as to how you've got elm trees. Not many of them about.

JC03745 · 06/12/2024 15:54

Our lane all have house names- there are no numbers! We didn't choose it to be pretentious as some have said! 🙄

A neighbour changed her house name and had no issues. The post people didn't have issues and it didn't cause dramas! Ideally, keep it short. I wouldn't use 'Eucalyptus House' because you will likely get lots of spelling mistakes.

The Gums
The Oaks
The Elms
Elmtree
Twin Oaks
Cider House
Bramley House
Orchard House
Lakeside
Sage House
Sorrell
The Acorns

What about 'Retreat Cottage' as the area sounds lovely

GetItInYerBag · 06/12/2024 16:03

I'd call my house Waney Elm but that's because I'm a big Keeping Up Appearances Fan 😁

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/12/2024 16:13

If there are eucalyptus trees you could call it
Koala Kottage

Exactly the same in my road. We have a house number, and use it alongside the name, but all the other houses in the road either have just a name or are numbers within terraces. It's horrible for deliveries and quite dangerous for emergency services not to be able to find places quickly. I don't like the name of our house but wouldn't try to change it because the confusion would only get worse.
I wish the council would just renumber the whole road and ask everyone to display their number prominently, alongside their house name if they like to use it.

My road is the same and mine is one that doesn't have a number. Apparently, some of the numbers that do exist are duplicated. I have to provide extra details for every delivery and people still get a bit lost despite the name being on the gatepost and the front of the house.

If asked where a particular house is by name, I have no clue despite having having lived here 10 years as the names are all a bit generic - Elmfield, Glendale, that sort of thing.

The worst thing is that my house name is not generic, not English and is slightly bonkers. I'm sure it was deeply meaningful to the previous occupants but I always end up giving it out with an ironic wince. However, I just don't want to engage in the further complications that would ensue if I tried to change it.

I too wish the council would just do a renumbering - but as there are a number of Hyacinth Bucket types on the road, I imagine there'd be uproar.

When arranging a delivery or inviting a guest, I include a little spiel explaining how to identify the house (' tenth house on the right hand side of the road when coming from the town, slate roof, stone wall with a bird feeder on top, red car in driveway' etc.

Me too. Mine is first on the right, only one of its type on the road and has the only car of its colour on the road on its drive. Yet the number of people who say they'd gone all around the loop at the top of the cul de sac to find it remains astounding!

Not everyone reads my instructions, wrongly believing that the satnav will take them there. But those who do are very grateful, especially couriers who are in a hurry, and supermarket deliveries.

I wish that too. The very first night I spent in this house (we’re in a city, but in a weird area where the land slopes so steeply there are lots of unbuildable-on wooded slopes and houses have huge gardens, and ours, a wreck, is at the end of a long, pitch-lack drive) I had two police cars pull up outside and two officers initially refusing to believe I hadn’t called in an emergency because the operator wasn’t to know the intricacies of terrace numbering… It wasn’t the most restful introduction.

And yes, despite being in the city, I have to give rural-style directions. The postcode takes you up the hill to a museum, and the best-known landmark has closed, I have to say ‘You remember X Pub? Well, it’s closed now, but we’re next door!’

WildFigs · 06/12/2024 16:45

Have a look back through old censuses and anything else you have- you may find it previously had a different name, which can be a good starting point.

Yes I’d go for a historical approach. Also names of previous resident families could be a source of inspiration.

Thank you so much to those who have provided useful suggestions - we have shortlisted 3 of them and are going to sleep on it.

A few people suggesting how pretentious it is to have a house name over a number, I would love nothing more than to not have to think about this and have a house number so the Christmas presents we have ordered and post can actually be delivered to us rather than me having to drive round looking for them. However as many rural villages experience it’s very common for the lanes to not be numbered. Thank you to those who have also pointed that out. Every home in our village has a name and none of them have been numbered. I am sure that if we even tried to request this from the local council the 3 other houses on our lane would not be happy.

mumsnet can be so supportive and useful, it’s just such a shame that a select few people are just on here to try and suggest the worst in people at every opportunity.

thank you again for those who helped, we don’t really mind what the house is called at all and just want it to be fitting to the rest of the village and it’s surroundings so you’ve really helped!

Such a weird attitude re numbers over names. I grew up in a rural village. No houses in probably a 10 mile radius had a number, all names. It's just how it often is in villages.

Please try and pick something which has a historic tie to the area rather than a bland / generic cottage name.
