Looking for suggestions to rename our house. Current name is causing a lot of confusing hence the change.

characteristics of the house;

  • built in the 1800s
  • very traditional exterior
  • Set in the countryside
  • house surrounded by gardens full of flowers and trees
  • gardens include an orchard and small lake

any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Suekev marginally better than Dickrose

The best example of a post about First World Problems I have ever come across….😂

Whatever you do, don't do what friends of ours did and combine names. Suekev anyone?

I've always said if I owned a blackpool hotel I would call it Craali a combination of my kids names 😂

wizzler · 08/12/2024 23:07

It sounds very idyllic. Potter House or Milne House?
The Lilypad?

I like The Elms. Or Elm House.

I like this too. Somehow Elm is a lovely word written down as well as a beautiful tree, and The Elms or Elm House are elegant names.

Where is the boast?

SoupDragon · 09/12/2024 09:04

Where is the boast?

In fairness, a description of the house as being a traditiinal, 19thc affair ‘surrounded by gardens full of flowers and trees’, and which include ‘an orchard and a small lake’ is making it very clear that this is no farm-labourer’s cottage or roadside bungalow.

Though it has set me off down a mental rabbit hole about what the difference between a large pond and a small lake is… Just size or water source?

TeaAndStrumpets · 09/12/2024 09:23

It's not just country houses that have names. Granted they would have had numbers as well, but growing up among a lot of tiny terrace houses there were plenty. I would look at all the house names while I was walking to school. I remember Ivanhoe was a popular one, also names of places in the lake district. When I was older our humble student house was called Ada, which for some reason we found hugely entertaining.

There you go OP - Ivanhoe or Ada!

TeaAndStrumpets · 09/12/2024 09:27

From about 1902 until 1960 our house (in town) was called Sunny Lea. It just has a number now.

Hoolahoophop · 09/12/2024 09:41

I love a named house.

Currently I would choose Nancherrow the house everyone comes home to, is welcomed with open arms and feels loved and valued, safe and welcome....Because I just read Coming Home.

Little Pemberley would definitely be on the list something from a favorite book for sure. Maybe Avalon

Histrionic House

TeaAndStrumpets · 09/12/2024 09:59

I don't understand all the snide comments. Boasting? Histrionic?

Thought this was a property discussion forum. It's an interesting topic and OP gave a list of things to factor in. Should she have said "I need a name for my house but I don't want to tell you anything about it." ?

Some rude and unhelpful posters on here.

VacuumPacked · 09/12/2024 10:02

does anyone remember ‘Benji’ on what3words 2022 still up on YT,
assuring that parcels will find the correct recipient in the face of blatant
theft

houses in the countryside have historical names, maybe after early dwellers
as in John Dawes (Jack) house became Jackdaws cottage

in rural France we don’t have numbers, but names on post boxes, in ‘le Bourg’
La Poste and everyone else knows who is who and where,

same as anywhere,
no one is invisible, no house so remote it wouldn’t be found by Google maps,
the smartly dressed couple full of missionary zeal, bailiffs

How are people meant to make suggestions if there isn't a description of the house? Telepathy?

jenevivech · 09/12/2024 11:21

What about a translation of apple/apple related, e.g Melora Cottage (Greek for golden apple)

Some people post asking for help naming their babies, dogs etc... what's the difference with a house?

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 09/12/2024 13:46

All these plant and tree names can be a bit cutesy and twee.

What is the roof made from?
What about
Slates
Pantiles

Lintels
Stone House

Lane’s End

Did no one suggest “Green Lawns”?

You might say that but postal and courier deliveries can be a real issue. My mum lives in a named house in a village - she probably only gets 2 out of 5 deliveries. She doesn't drive and has mobility issues so cannot go around the village asking for lost packages. Poor-english comprehension from couriers is one problem, not the only issue of course, but her house is well labelled and signposted. Postcode is correct. What more can she do?

Thank you for the prompt of what3words - I might suggest that to my Mum - she can put it in delivery instructions. It may not help, but if it does that's good!
