Please help me find a property anywhere in uk for under 60k. Preferably under 40k. One bedroom ground floor flat maybe. Seen some places up north but it seems impossible to do nationwide check on rightmovè

I live in over-60 social housing, @Crikeyalmighty, and it's not grim! It's small, but so are most one-bed flats. Must very much depend on location.

Oh , well that puts a bit of a downer on things. One of mine did a 6 month uni exchange to Liverpool and loved it.Met his gf there ( she's Australian too, both lawyers). Irritating, nobody likes a smartarse, let alone two.
I'm a wee bit scared but he did say he preferred Scotland when he went to stay for 2 weeks , called it "Englands more established, better looking and nicer cousin". Do I have to go into hiding now?

Don't worry it happens to us all the time "Australia was a bit meh but NZ is amazing)

running away now,,,,,,,,,,,,,

We don’t have terrorism in Scotland. Years ago someone tried to ram into the airport and the locals stopped him and gave him a doing. No messing about with the Scots lol. The stabbings etc are v rare , much rarer than England anyway …crime round here is teens nicking the council bin metal insert to take to the grassy hill ground to light fires in so they can party round heat. Gotta give them credit for not just setting fires on the grass , I suppose. We did have a shop break in but the cameras had them caught in an hour 🤣

caringcarer · 01/12/2024 00:20

OP you need to find somewhere where you are within walking distance of a village/town with a GP and chemist. You'll be able to buy a flat for £60k.

Crikeyalmighty · 01/12/2024 00:22

@Garlicpest I think it very much does depend on area - land is a total premium here so we have lots of £400 k type retirement flats yes but the social ones really aren't that nice- we have a few not too bad developments but they are like gold dust!!

Why dont you try approaching your local council? You may get a medical priority one eligible for sheltered housing.

This seems a good idea.

This retirement flat is on the ground floor in Paignton.

That place looks really grim.

OP, I’d be wary of retirement apartments. I’ve read a lot about them being difficult to sell if you need to move on/move into a care home at some point.

Great find thank you

That’s also going to auction so won’t be that price.

marmamia · 01/12/2024 00:44

Well that one in Barrmill is gorgeous. Particularly the outside. So jealous.

Normallynumb · 01/12/2024 00:46

Before you consider moving enquire about social housing in your own area on medical grounds
Capital/ savings does not exclude you automatically
Without derailing there are parallels with my own situation.
I bought a flat outright but the service charges are extremely high and there is no help with that
Posters saying avoid leasehold obviously have choices and options which people with disabilities on limited income do not have
I wish you well

marmamia · 01/12/2024 00:48

Im not sure what you mean. A nursing home?
I'll go back to drooling over houses in rightmove.

lobeydosser · 01/12/2024 00:53

I really like the look of this one

Solid, ex local authority, ground floor, two bedroom, lots of outside space.
Variety of housing nearby plus medical centre and swimming pool in village apparently.
I don't know the area at all but looking at the map it appears that the garden backs onto fields and there's countryside close by.

This is a great town - so much going on and really friendly. I have been there on holiday and my BIL has taken early retirement and moved up from Kent 5 years ago. Loves it.

Christ, wereabouts in the UK do you live? None of that where I am...

marmamia · 01/12/2024 01:44

If by any chance someone is interested in the prices in Sydney look up realestate.com.au. Be prepared to be flabbergasted. The same has happened in Vancouver ( Canada) and Auckland ( NZ) and no doubt heaps of other places. Near where I lived 4 beautiful Federation houses were bought, knocked down and replaced with I don't know how many flats ( hundreds at least). The thing is they are empty half the year , same with beautiful properties along the North Shore in Sydney, Australian people can not compete with Chinese buyers. I have no idea why the govt doesn't change the law ( raking in the tax I expect) but feck it's annoying driving past 100's of empty units when there is a rental crisis here.

Here's an example of typical Sydney property prices a unit about 20 minutes from the CBD

marmamia · 01/12/2024 02:38

I guess that's roughly 900k in pounds. This is what makes me think the UK is cheap.( not in London obviously). It's a new-build unit and 134m²

You need to compare London prices with Sydney prices though. Saying how cheap the UK housing market is whilst comparing small towns in Scotland to central Sydney is a nonsense!

You don't state your age, but I'm wondering if you've considered buying a retirement flat? Some are available to anyone over 55. If so, you would probably be able to live in a more desirable area. I would avoid purchasing any property that requires renovation (however cheap) as building costs have escalated massively over the past few years.

Yes, could you not apply to live in a Bield complex, I know they are over Scotland and housing benefit is accepted.

Not sure if you get housing benefit with 66k though? I think if you searched Glasgow plus maxmiles.

If you search Glasgow, +30 miles, flat and bungalow, 60k max. There are 337 properties.

Itsaowl · 01/12/2024 03:47

The properties posted in Market Rasen were a good shout as it’s really not a dump at all.

I guess the difference is you guys have villages and we reallly dont. Not many close to capital cities at least. I still stand by my point that 1.8 mill for a smallish flat not even close to the city is madness. But it is what it is . Vancouver don't even bother.
