Please help me find a property anywhere in uk for under 60k. Preferably under 40k. One bedroom ground floor flat maybe. Seen some places up north but it seems impossible to do nationwide check on rightmovè

Here's a 2 bed in Camarthen. I've not lived there but I've visited lots of times and really liked it.

It's on by auction so you'd need to make sure you really knew what you were buying!

You could maybe get a lodger in to make some money in a 2 bed.

Just recovered after fainting at how cheap flats are in the UK. In Australia it would be "please help me find a flat for under 600 thousand not 60! Even with the exchange rate call it 300 thousand pounds roughly. Well there is just nothing, except residential land ( small block with no house in literally the middle of nowhere.) And if an Australian tells you its"remote" then believe me it is. There's a reason the vast majority of us live no more than 3 hours from a capital city, and generally along the coast. The middle is a desert. I'm amazed at those prices. I could buy my kids a flat!! They are in Sydney, my oldest paid almost ( doing calculations) 350 thousand pounds for a very small 2 bedder with no parking and a teensy balcony 30 minutes from the CBD. Astounded I tell ya.

@ISeriouslyDoubtIt

They’re not all awful! The link in Carmarthen, S Wales I posted above looks lovely! I’d live in that flat myself. I grew up nearby and my husband is from Carmarthen itself. We visit several times a year. It’s nice, I promise! If anything a bit posh. Lovely little community and has an M&S and everything 👍

I was talking about the ones in the s Wales valleys or outside Newport. I'd call Carmarthen West Wales and it certainly is different from up the valleys!

Edited

A lot of these places in the links are not in great areas though. I live in Scotland and wouldn't live in some of the towns posted although I appreciate the OP has limited options.

Oh , well that puts a bit of a downer on things. One of mine did a 6 month uni exchange to Liverpool and loved it.Met his gf there ( she's Australian too, both lawyers). Irritating, nobody likes a smartarse, let alone two.
I'm a wee bit scared but he did say he preferred Scotland when he went to stay for 2 weeks , called it "Englands more established, better looking and nicer cousin". Do I have to go into hiding now?

Don't worry it happens to us all the time "Australia was a bit meh but NZ is amazing)

running away now,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Crikeyalmighty · 30/11/2024 23:55

I think one thing many aren't factoring in ( although not relevant for OP) is that many of these properties won't be mortgageable - so yes you probably could get a flat if you have £60 to £70 k cash albeit not in a very great area-

DinosaurOfFire · 30/11/2024 23:56

What about South Wales as a PP mentioned? In Swansea you can get a cheap studio flat right in the city centre. Leasehold as they are flats so I'm not sure on the charges for that, but they are within easy walking distance of the main bus station and slightly longer walking distance (10 minutes?) To two large supermarkets. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/148777838#/?channel=RES_BUY if you wanted a doer upper, there are houses on the outskirts for around 60k but they need a lot of work done from looking at the listings online.

Have you consider a canal boat?

Bit tricky climbing in and out, I don't think that would work with spinal problems!

Garlicpest · 30/11/2024 23:59

beeloubee · 30/11/2024 19:52

Ì don't work anymore. I'm ill health retired sadly with spinal problems. I have 66k cash. And I get pip and esa. Looking for anywhere. Don't have family really. I can't afford to buy in sw where I'm from. Willing to move anywhere that's not too rough although I know that will be hard to find with small budget.

Herefordshire. I live here because I couldn't afford to stay in London. It's full of people like us!

Farming country, very pretty, lots of history, terrible public services but better than most areas for health provision - both the latter are due to sparse population.

this is a retirement place but over 55’s and definitely not rough! Really close to the centre of Chester-le-street

Likely to be at least £3k pa for service charge and ground rent. Be wary of ground rent and service charges, OP. They can go up and up.

Crikeyalmighty · 01/12/2024 00:01

@FlannelandPuce I think that's a really good buy for someone. Tidy inside and outside and pleasant area

DearDenimEagle · 01/12/2024 00:01

Most if not all of the Scottish ones are mortgageable. I’ve been searching with my sons and only 2 in 3 months have been not morgageable. I’ve only posted areas I’d live in, or have lived in, too.

Turmerictolly · 01/12/2024 00:03

Why dont you try approaching your local council? You may get a medical priority one eligible for sheltered housing.

TakeMyLifeAndLetItBe · 01/12/2024 00:04

This is in between Durham and Newcastle, recently refurbished with a long leasehold on it (975 yrs) and very close to Beamish Museum too!
Edited to add that it's a ground floor flat.

DearDenimEagle · 01/12/2024 00:05

I prefer the houses to the flats. I’m always wary of common areas and unexpected bills for things that are communal responsibility. Been there, done that. Freehold house is the way to go and I only listed bungalows or ground floor flats as the OP has health issues . There is a lot to choose from .

Crikeyalmighty · 01/12/2024 00:06

@bradypuss that is an absolute bargain - it's not that grim either!!

Yes, this. Once you're over 60 the social housing options open up, especially with disabilities. You have to be resident there already, so it's the first thing to try if you don't really want to relocate.

Crikeyalmighty · 01/12/2024 00:12

@Garlicpest really depends where you live- I live in Bath and just because you are over 60 and live here the list is still huge unless like Op you have disabilities and can creep up the list - and even then the options really are not that nice either here - as they will only prioritise you then for the over 55 social housing- most of which is a bit grim
