what could £140,000 buy you within 25 miles of where you live

Inspired by million pound thread, I thought what if anything could you buy with 4 x the average full time salary (32,000) so 128K mortgage and a 10% deposit 13K = 141K call it 140 to allow for fees
90 minutes is considered the longest reasonable commute . So I thought what is the biggest accommodation you can get near you that is liveable ie no renovation just re-decorating the electrics and plumbing are safe not necessarily modern

There is a one 1 bed retirement property with 60 years left on the lease.

Apart from that it's just parcels of land or garages.

Wow what a house for the money. Great family home

Lovely!

SgtJuneAckland · 20/02/2024 18:36

A beach hut

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 20/02/2024 18:38

140 k would buy me 2 decent terraces in a town less than 15 miles away

Riverlee · 20/02/2024 18:38

One bedroom flat.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/02/2024 18:39

Lots of properties for that price. Smart 1 bed city flats in Sheffield and Leeds to 4 bed semis in old pit villages.

LBOCS2 · 20/02/2024 18:39

Park (mobile) homes, shared ownership or retirement places and two flats with short leases. All at around the £140k mark.

WaitingfortheTardis · 20/02/2024 18:39

A fairly run down 1 bed flat a couple of towns away. We actually live in one of the cheaper areas of SW but we're in the countryside and it's an area without many newbuilds so there are mostly houses rather than flats.

SnapdragonToadflax · 20/02/2024 18:44

Two retirement properties, or a studio flat in a very grotty block.

No other properties below 150k.

Popplebop · 20/02/2024 18:45

Quite a lot of 1 bed flats and then shared ownership to 2 bed flats. By the time you get to 20 miles out still quite a lot but depends if you want to live in that particular area.

JaneLawrence · 20/02/2024 18:46

Ooh, I’ve found a 7 bed terraced house for £80k about half an hour from where I live!

It needs redecorating, but otherwise looks ok from the photos, and they want cash buyers only, but it still seems suspiciously cheap. It’s not the best part of town, but I wouldn’t have said it’s the worst either 🤷‍♀️

FizzyStream · 20/02/2024 18:49

2-3 bed terraced or end terrace.
3 bed semi in a dodgy area or a 2 bed apartment.

I'm quite surprised but we live in an area where house prices have shot up more than in other areas of the country (so I've been told by DH 🤔)

We bought our 4 bed detached for £194k 8 years ago and it's now worth about £375k.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 20/02/2024 17:36

Has to adjust it to 20 miles but basically either the teeniest of one bedroom flats, although the building is lovely. Or a couple of places where you really really wouldn’t want to live….

@MandyMotherOfBrian

why would you have to change it from 25 miles to 20 miles??

@Cottagecheeseisnotcheese

in one direction park homes.
in the other studio/1bdrm flats.

id need a lot further to get a 3bdrm house.

central SE.

iwafs · 20/02/2024 18:50

Lots of 1 bed flats. I suppose you could put your children under the bed.
Lots of retirement properties
A very grotty 3 bed house.

nocoolnamesleft · 20/02/2024 18:54

3 bed semi, or 4 bed terraced, in reasonable decorative order.

Tiddlywinks63 · 20/02/2024 18:58

Very, very little unless you want to live in an absolute tip in a very undesirable area or a mobile home.
It won’t buy you a retirement home or anywhere I would ever consider buying.

flatmop · 20/02/2024 19:00

Lots of 2 bed flats, a few run down 2 bed terraces.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/02/2024 19:03

Bath- Couple of bit tired but not terrible retirement flats , a second hand mobile home (very nice location though) and a 50% share on brand new semi about 8 miles away in ex mining village

A bed sit/1 bed apartment a bit further out.

Crazymadchickenlady · 20/02/2024 19:03

1530 properties if I search max £140000 within 20 miles! Mostly two or three bedroom terraces/semis in ok areas within easy commuting distance of a major city.
