Inspired by a recent thread that really made me realise how wildly different house prices are around the country

This is the highest listed one near me. A 5 bed barn conversion with nearly 2.5 acres of land

Check out this 5 bedroom barn conversion for sale on Rightmove

5 bedroom barn conversion for sale in Bennick Barn, Brinsea Road, Congresbury, BS49 for £1,000,000. Marketed by Robin King Estate Agents, Congresbury

There are two pages of rightmove properties within a couple miles of me ranging between £4m to £9m. I don’t live in anything like that 😆. £1m would generally get you a 4-6 bed house depending on the specific postcode area, but there are quite a few flats around that price too (coastal)

There are some beautiful houses around aren't there

Weirdly, there’s only three properties in for exactly 1 million. One is a horrible Victorian townhouse (that should be lovely but isn’t, very rundown) that is separated in to four flats - you get all of it. One is a car park, in my nearest town, with planning permission (which is interesting as it’s still being regularly used to full with parking - they really want us to stop driving don’t they?). And finally, something that looks like one of those Grand Designs build houses that is clearly very, very much, nowhere near finished and is being marketed as ‘a fantastic opportunity to finish the build to your own specifications’ - er, no thanks.

I’m in North London zone 5 … shockingly little within 10 miles that is anything other than boring 3 bed 1930’s semis with marble grey kitchen and bifold doors to the garden. There are a few half decent houses in Bushey / the odd Victorian maisonette in Hampstead but again nothing that really screams million pound pad!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 20/02/2024 17:44

4 bed 2 bathroom individual house on a country B road.

NickMarlow · 20/02/2024 17:46

A 6 bed, 5 bath detached house in a nearby village.

Or 8 3 bed, 1 bath semis like the one I live in!!!

Ooh, I like this game.
10 miles is a stretch as I live in West Yorkshire, not North, but this is what Rightmove came up with ...

“Guilt edged”

Whoever designed that thing should be guilt edged.

Illpickthatup · 20/02/2024 18:02

This is the only one around that price within a 10 mile radius.

Oh my god I want that house.

<heads off to check lottery ticket, premium bonds and the back of the sofa>

Quite a few lovely ones where l live.. very near Jane McDonald's .. although her 4 bed bungalow is worth 800 thousand ( doubled since she bought it).
I could buy a million pound house tomorrow.. but l don't want to move.. l bought my kids a 900 thousand pound house each.
I've seen a 3 bed very large Bungalow l was thinking of buying.. but what if l don't like the area or neighbours etc?

Potentially a detached 3 bed, with a nice garden and garage.
