Most boring place you’ve lived?

I’ve lived all over. London, Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Cambridge, and Singapore and Chicago.

The most boring place I lived was Cardiff. Lovely city, but lived in the bay in the redevelopment for 6 months and couldn’t wait to leave.

Eastcote

I had the misfortune of living there in the 90's and I only just got out before I lost my soul in the IKEA ☠️

Lhasatude · 03/02/2024 21:34

@Eyesopenwideawake yep, lived in Spalding briefly. Very flat and dull.

lonelywater · 03/02/2024 22:28

I went to swindon once. it was shut.

Finallybreathe · 03/02/2024 22:44

Redditch. Couldn’t wait to leave. Dull, soulless, tired place.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 03/02/2024 23:20

@memedear - I can imagine as a student you found Farnham & Aldershot ‘boring’.

Ive plenty of experience living in this area. Like a couple of decades.

It’s horses for courses I guess 🤷🏼‍♀️

flipflopfly · 03/02/2024 23:33

@UnfriendMe I live here now 😝 of course there are worse places to live in the world and I suspect you're right Dubai would be one of them.

memedear · 03/02/2024 23:37

@Ohyeahwaitaminute I found it boring that it seemed like it hadn't progressed for like a hundred years. As a black Brit I don't feel like going somewhere and being made to feel uncomfortable so yes excuse me if it bored me but it was my experience and you're of course entitled to yours. And I didn't know that Surrey was so non diverse otherwise I would have stayed in the city.

Dubai was certainly remarkably dull. Though, on reflection, I preferred it to Leicestershire. Only marginally. Though Leicestershire’s climate was more palatable.

I'm fascinated to find where people who find Winchester and Guildford live- I can imagine if you live in London you might find them a bit dull if you want London type 'stuff going on' but given that large parts of the UK aren't that great , these seem perfectly pleasant nice places to live, with a fair bit to do .By 'dull' what is it that people are actually wanting that they aren't getting somewhere like Winchester or Guildford out of interest?? I can see it totally in places like Lincolnshire or from soulless towns but these are mid sized attractive places with decent shopping, nice pubs, nice restaurants, good countryside on doorstep etc and where a great many people aspire to. .

Is nowhere in the North boring?

Objectrelations · 04/02/2024 00:01

Was going to say the same about NZ. It's really boring. No doubt there are a lot of beaches and the countryside is beautiful.

What's the food like in NZ? Do you have to be in a city to eat well?

I have a bit of a closet dream to retire to NZ. We don't mind boring, we don't need thrills now in our 40s, we adore nature and the scenery is simply breathtaking. Like North Yorkshire on speed :)

But I cannot cope with bad food. Please tell me the local produce at least is fresh and fabulous?

Is nowhere in the North boring?

I am in the NW countryside and the most exciting thing that ever happens is the silage is put off two days by rain, the tractor takes a phone line down, and they change the road systems and the entire local FB group kicks off. Or someone has fireworks mid week and a lynch mob appears online when there is a complaint.

(They DO make some terrible road decisions)

So yeah. Not all of the North is thrills and spills :)

We also went to a massive party a few months after moving in and the only person who bothered talking to us was the person who invited us and his partner... Which was nice. We probably should have made more of an effort ourselves, I suppose. So it ain't necessarily the golden rule that everyone up north is friendly either.

Desborough Northants. One chippy and a bus stop.oh and a bowls club for the oldies. Five miles from civilisation.

It’s (kind of) got West Lodge farm park!

Veggieveggiecoke · 04/02/2024 00:50

I was brought up in Sevenoaks. Absolutely soulless for a teenager. I always went to Tunbridge Wells for a night out ! Sevenoaks is so ridiculously overrated .

WasteOfPaint · 04/02/2024 00:51

Taunton

@maddiemookins16mum It has a Waitrose! Positively glamorous compared to Kidlington.

I had Waitrose smoked salmon pate this evening…so massively disappointed ,dry and tasteless.

Welwyn Garden City in the 1980s .

It's still dull as fuck.

Anywhere in cambridgeshire.

We used to live just outside Cambridge. I don't think it's fair to say Cambridge is boring - there's loads of stuff to do.

The countryside in most of Cambridgeshire is boring though

renthead · 04/02/2024 06:11

Rugby. Should be a thriving town, what with the train line to London, grammar schools and a bit of history. Sadly, they don't make the best of any of it and it's dull as ditchwater. Couldn't wait to leave.

I used to live in Rugby and although it does not live up to its potential as a town, I loved living there. It's close enough to a lot of interesting places and has good connections to London, so it didn't really matter.

Now I live on Vancouver Island in Canada. Lots of people think it's the dream, but unless you love mountain biking, hiking and paddle boarding, it is boring as fuck. Just like NZ I imagine. I love visiting the midlands! So much to do by comparison Grin

I said winchester 🙋🏼‍♀️ I grew up there and visit regularly.
For me the ‘dullness’ comes from the lack of diversity. Obviously not all but many live in a middle class bubble of privilege and it’s quite wearing. The shops are mostly relatively expensive so as a 30 odd year old mum of 2 the shopping is rubbish. The restaurants rarely change and are often expensive (the ivy, Rick stein) or a fairly bland pizza place.
I agree it’s pretty with good countryside nearby. But I found it dull. We live in a city in the north which is diverse, constantly changing, loads on for kids, pop up restaurants and access to amazing countryside too.
It’s personal preference- those in the bubble will love Winchester and find where I live too gritty.
