Most boring place you’ve lived?

I’ve lived all over. London, Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Cambridge, and Singapore and Chicago.

The most boring place I lived was Cardiff. Lovely city, but lived in the bay in the redevelopment for 6 months and couldn’t wait to leave.

West Berkshire, the countryside is pretty and there are some lovely villages BUT it’s boring.

It’s not that bad, I am right in the town centre though and I do make an effort.

Amisilli · 18/03/2024 16:12

Lived in Cardiff a few years ago. Couldn't agree more it's a strange place where people just stay and never move away. I found it very insular.

First job after graduating was the Civil Service when the HQ was at Alencon Link. I got sent on a training course in Basingstoke and it was the longest week of my life. It rained every day (something to do with it being between hills that trap the rain - and I went to a Welsh university, so I knew about rain 😃).

I used to live in Basingstoke, it’s a very pleasant town, I’m not sure how or why some places get called boring or soulless.

it has 2 museums, 2 theatres, leisure activities, independent restaurants and shops, a big mall, leisure parks, cinemas etc etc. what exactly are you looking for if you think it’s boring or soulless?

The thread reminds me of the people who say ‘there’s nothing for the teenagers to do’ as an explanation for why there is antisocial behaviour in a housing estate, like teenagers should be provided with free ‘clubs’ or ‘activities’ all the time or else.

This is getting silly now. Just stop.

Edinburgh

Don’t be ridiculous. If you find Edinburgh boring you are the problem.

MarkWithaC · 18/03/2024 16:26

I think Edinburgh's quite dull, TBF. It's very small. And a bit up itself.

marshmallowfinder · 18/03/2024 16:39

Leicester.

Crikeyalmighty · 18/03/2024 21:05

@MarkWithaC as an ex Mansfield born and bred who moved away at 29 to London - I totally get that- it's all a bit Lee Anderson and blokes constantly at the pub for me . I've lived in lots of places since but nowhere that had wuite the same kind of mysoginistic vibe

Sandrine1982 · 18/03/2024 21:23

Another vote for Milton Keynes.

My first proper job too but gosh I couldn't wait to get away ...

"Bicester. Total shithole, nothing but barber shops."

Did you miss the turn off for Bicester shopping village? 🤣

Ok, barber shops and an overrated, crowded shopping centre that is always full of twats. :)

Kat2328 · 19/03/2024 08:16

I have good friends in Cardiff and visit regularly. We would never think of going to the Bay unless there was some specific event going on there.

The Bay skyline and architecture has become iconic symbol of Cardiff but ironically there is nothing much there for visitors apart from chain restaurants. I wonder if they are busy at weekends and if so, who with?

Crikeyalmighty · 19/03/2024 09:02

@PutMyFootIn lived there for 3 years- absolutely hate it- land of scrapyards and motorways

Blackdahlisthebest · 19/03/2024 09:26

Dubai. Was working there. I don't like artificial "fun" so hated it. Missed nature and being outside such a lot (extreme weather most of the time).

Another vote for Singapore. 2.5 years in and I'm climbing the walls.

Edited

We lived/worked there too. We used to say "it can't be worse than Dubai" I think it came a very close second. I absolutely hate the "life style" there.

Switzerland - it's soulless and the people I worked with had no sense of humour (apparently a common trait in the Swiss). I missed the usual banter of the British office.

Are you talking about Zug? If so, I agree. I remember going in to the completely empty post office to buy a stamp. Went to counter and was asked if I'd picked a ticket (number) when I entered. I said no, "there's nobody here". The sour faced woman made me go back and pick a ticket. They were all so miserable and it felt so artificial.

Gettingcolder · 19/03/2024 13:22

@Blackdahlisthebest Not Zug, I worked for an office in Geneva.

GasPanic · 19/03/2024 14:06

I guess it depends what kind of "interesting" you are up for.

I live in nowheresville, in the middle of nowhere. It is indeed very boring with very little to do locally. I expect Cardiff is very interesting compared with where I live.

However it has low crime, very little street violence or getting your house bust into, people dealing drugs or racing cars around on a Saturday night. The neighbours are quiet and generally polite and there is little noise and pollution, or parking wars. You can get to lots of places that are more "interesting" quite quickly and there is lots of work to be had.

They do that in the UK as well.

This is true, but I was far happier living next door to a crack house in a scuzzy bit of London than I was in the pretty, peaceful midlands village I moved to.

ShanghaiDiva · 19/03/2024 15:22

Steinhausen, near Zug - so dull.
small village in Austria- beyond dull, incredibly insular and all ds’s friends lived on farms in the middle of nowhere. Used to dread party invitations.

I kind of know what you mean.

It's a bit like working in India or Norway.

Norway is hugely prim and proper and everything works like clockwork. There aren't that many exciting events going on, most stuff is predictable and there are few surprises.

India is somewhat chaotic and there is a lot of scope for living on your wits and using them to come out on top. There is always something interesting going on. Whether that is something you actually want to be part of or not is another issue.

I am not sure which I prefer.

But the most boring place ever?
