Most boring place you’ve lived?

laviniaqueenoftheromans · 02/02/2024 21:11

I’ve lived all over. London, Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Cambridge, and Singapore and Chicago.

The most boring place I lived was Cardiff. Lovely city, but lived in the bay in the redevelopment for 6 months and couldn’t wait to leave.

Spalding

🤣 I was coming on to say Holbeach!

Melton Mowbray.

Can you at least get a decent pork pie there?

Wheeeeee · 04/02/2024 08:02

I grew up in the endless suburbia between Reading and Guildford. No shops, no pubs, hardly any green space, public transport is shit and you can't do anything without driving. No sense of community at all.

Justcannot · 04/02/2024 08:14

Another vote for Singapore. 2.5 years in and I'm climbing the walls.

I said winchester 🙋🏼‍♀️ I grew up there and visit regularly.
For me the ‘dullness’ comes from the lack of diversity. Obviously not all but many live in a middle class bubble of privilege and it’s quite wearing. The shops are mostly relatively expensive so as a 30 odd year old mum of 2 the shopping is rubbish. The restaurants rarely change and are often expensive (the ivy, Rick stein) or a fairly bland pizza place.
I agree it’s pretty with good countryside nearby. But I found it dull. We live in a city in the north which is diverse, constantly changing, loads on for kids, pop up restaurants and access to amazing countryside too.
It’s personal preference- those in the bubble will love Winchester and find where I live too gritty.

I said Guildford, and i think your description fits our experience perfectly. I never lived anywhere quite so divided. It's probably nice if your face fits and you've got money to burn.

Falmouth, Cornwall.

Christ alive.

God's waiting room.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/02/2024 10:31

@GotMooMilk I do get that- which is why I said it's probably dull if you want big city type stuff and diversity- I don't think it's dull per se though in a way somewhere like a grim town in Lincolnshire is- we live in Bath which could be charged I guess with same- we do however have more mixed shopping- and as well as the posh stuff have 2 branches if Greggs, 2 superbugs, primark, new look etc- we also have a lot of family 'events' all year round, a kids theatre etc- the large 2 unis do make it more diverse - but not hugely diverse

Crikeyalmighty · 04/02/2024 10:35

@shreknjumps the thing about the north is it has far more big city's and really big towns- people forget in the south of England besides London only Bristol has a population over500k

WHAT!
How long ago was this?!
The nightlife and culture is amazing for a small town, greatly aided by the presence of the art college and University. Not to mention all the standard outdoorsy, beachy stuff.

I'm living here now and have done for decades. I must go and look for this "culture".

I was there as a student studying Camborne School of Mines Tremough Campus.

I’d just done my undergrad in Cardiff. I was so miserable in Cornwall. I’ve returned since I still hate it. Boring, overpriced, roads clogged with lost tourists and caravans for months, winter was depressing! The racism I heard from locals was unbelievable.

HelpMeGetThrough · 04/02/2024 12:37

@SquashPenguin Tremough is just up the road from me. My OH went there when it was a school.

You must have come across the "Cornwall for the Cornish" brigade. They do my head in.

Titsywoo · 04/02/2024 18:14

Ayr in Northern Queensland - I lived and worked there for 2 months about 24 years ago. Just a very backward place with very little to do. I read a lot. People were mostly lovely though.

Krampers · 04/02/2024 18:50

@GotMooMilk
You may find with time that changing- I am a minority loving in Winchester and know of others looking at moving here. We are after a quieter pace and access to good schools.

Well, you could try the Cornish Bank for a start. I'm going to see the Bug Club there in 2 weeks, which does mean I'm going to have to miss out on a rave my friend's sound system is putting on at the Fish Factory that same night. This weekend they had This is the Kit on at the Princess Pavilion, and then there's always stuff on at the Poly- we're going to see the new Studio Ghibli film at half term- I booked before I realised they were also showing it at the Phoenix, at the other end of town. Oh, and there's also Verdant Brewery- we saw the Jungle Brothers there a couple of months ago. It's sad that Penryn Space Agency don't do their raves at the Falmouth Rugby Club any more (but the absolute pinnacle for the Rugby Club was seeing Pussy Riot play there a few years ago!), but they seem to be doing a few things at the Cornish Bank, so hopefully that'll blossom. Oh, and not forgetting the Cottage parties, on Pendennis Point. And of course, there's always Chintz Symposium, and Beerwolf, and Underland...................
.....but nope, nothing going on in Falmouth 😆😆😆

@shreknjumps Barbershops...and discount Prada.

@littlefireseverywhere Agree, so many amazing places close by. I have asked my parents WTF they were thinking in choosing Kidlington, and my DM's take is that it's "near everything you want to do" which is fair, but it doesn't actually have anything you'd want to do.

😂😂 At least you can hire someone to make you a stiff G&T when you reach the ceiling.

I am a clean freak and even I found the spotless pavements and soullessness of the place disconcerting. Like the beginnings of a zombie apocalypse movie!

At least you are not in the damp, my friend and can swim outside!

Newchapterbeckons · 05/02/2024 13:59

This thread is making me itch. Like everywhere is fucking boring why are we even here type feeling! And my area hasn’t even been mentioned (yet!) although it looks so bleak and dull today.

The colour of life is on the inside folks! Or so they tell me….

😂

I’m glad someone else said this 😂.

verylongday · 03/02/2024 12:28

Sutton Coldfield. My god it was boring. Completely soulless and full of nimbys. Hated it.

Agreed. I lived there for years, snooty people and a ghost town. Used to work with the local community and can honestly say I could not wait to get away. The only redeeming feature was the park but I must have ran hundreds of miles around it (not all in one go obvs) and even that became a little stale. Luckily I moved to a beautiful market town which is the exact opposite.

MarkWithaC · 18/03/2024 15:50

East Midlands commuter belt/old pit villages, where I spent some of my childhood. Fucking nothing going on. Small-minded locals. Everyone drives everywhere, so you never get to have a chat and bump into people.
Moved to a biggish city for uni and immediately felt myself come to life. Then graduated to London and it's even better.

I'm surprised and disappointed to see Montreal on here. I've always fancied going and in my mind it's interesting and characterful.

good96 · 18/03/2024 15:54

Ilfracombe.
I moved there after coming on holiday for many years thinking it would be great - but apart from the scenary - there’s nothing there really.
Parking is a premium, if you’re not a local then you’re treated somewhat differently…

It’s also dead in the winter. Nothing really open as 60% of businesses are seasonal.

In the summer it is a tourist trap. Good for the local economy though. Unless you are retired and want a really quiet life, it’s boring. You have to travel to go to decent shopping areas too.

I now live in Barnstaple and that is somewhat better to be honest.

MrsApplepants · 18/03/2024 15:55

Haywards Heath. Where dementors go for their holidays. I’m never going back ever.

housethatbuiltme · 18/03/2024 16:03

I think everywhere is boring when you live there.

I'm from Durham City, also lived in York for a bit.

I use to think 'why on earth do Americans and Australians come HERE for holidays' of my little city growing up. They would then often point out things I never noticed before like medieval statues and Tudor buildings. From a holiday perspective I'm sure its a quaint and fascinating little city but living here while it was a 'nice' place to live its very dull day after day.
