Private Rental costs around the country

Floopyfloop · 30/09/2023 08:32

We have lived in private rentals for 25 as we have never managed to purchase.

The cost of rentals in our town absolutely beggars belief! I live in a town that is badly in need of redevelopment.

Using rightmove…. Tell me the nearest town to where you life and the cost to rent a mid quality 3 bedroom family house. (No fancy houses)

I am genuinely intrigued as to what the variance will be.

Also tell me if your town or city is a tourist area or dormitory town for a large city.

£1400 a month chapel Allerton vicinity Leeds

Hi OP, I'm in Wales in a touristy area, but far away from major places of work like Cardiff. A small, unremarkable 3 bedroom house would be anything from £900 - £1,500 a month. That's an average, although I have seen some for £700 per month, but they're very rare and there is usually a big catch.

The residential market is small and scarce. Landlords can cherrypick who they want to live in their properties, and can command high prices if they want to. Even thought the rental prices are ridiculous, they are practically doing some kind of community service if they decide to rent to the local population rather than tourists, because in the tourism market, they could be doing x 2 or x 3 the money in some places.

CornishTiger · 01/10/2023 11:51

Cornwall. Town not really touristy though. £900, £950, £1000 x 2, £1100, £1595.

Last time I looked there were no 3 beds. The real thing to consider though is how this private rentals compare to the Local Housing allowance. Here that is £733. That’s a huge shortfall to make up if suddenly needed to claim benefits due to illness or job loss.

medianewbie · 01/10/2023 11:57

Scottish Borders. 3 bed semi: rental ave: 750 pcm. purchase ave £150k. But there's almost no work or transport here. It's also very, VERY insular.

medianewbie · 01/10/2023 11:59

Add £££ for rural living transport costs, oil heating, expensive tiny village Co-op shops, rubbish Internet (no wfh). Cheap, but costly in other ways.

PatsyStonesBeehive · 01/10/2023 12:14

NW coastal town. Averaging around £900 for a 3 bed semi. This has gone up significantly in the last two years. You could have got the same house for £600 pre-pandemic. I can see from looking today it's creeping up further. Lot's of houses at London/SE prices in the nicer surrounding areas. It's terrifying and I really don't know how most families will cope if it continues.

My mum is Scottish and whilst I've never lived there I have been tempted by the low property prices etc.

But I'd struggle to find work there and the things you've raised hold me back. I think I'd struggle after living in London all my life.

thegardener67 · 01/10/2023 12:45

1000 pcm for a 3bed semi detached house in Devon, not a touristy town though.

Tequilamockinbird · 01/10/2023 12:49

I'm North East, near Newcastle but out towards the coast.

3 bed semi with garden average around £800 pcm

3 bed flats around £500 pcm

Shadypaws23 · 01/10/2023 12:57

Preston, not a tourist area

Weston Super Mare - £1250 - £1500.

Which is completely ridiculous, commuter town for Bristol, and deemed a touristy area.

Also quite deprived with mainly minimum wage jobs.

I reckon the majority (or at least a large minority) of workers work for companies in Bristol judging by the traffic issues in the morning rush hour!

HotApplePiePunch · 01/10/2023 13:10

Other side of Cardiff nearer boarder - 875-1250 pcm.

DH was pretty shocked - say shows nearby cities with better economies must be worse so looked - start at 1600 pcm and just go up and up.

Karmatime · 01/10/2023 13:37

SE coast, tourist area all year round really. Average about £2000. It’s hard to find a 2 bed flat for under £1500.
We moved from NW city and property prices and rentals are nearly twice as much here and that’s comparing with a sought after area in the north.
Salaries are not double!

Heronatemygoldfish · 01/10/2023 13:42

In the East Midlands town I grew up in its about £900. Where I actually live in home counties its £1500 for a not great house like we have and way above that for anything else.

gamerchick · 01/10/2023 15:21

Canny little scam this private rents thing isn't it? No wonder landlords are disliked.

Ireolu · 01/10/2023 15:33

I am not going to shame an area mentioned on here but I only live about 10 miles from it and it is rough as anything so if houses cost that much to rent there it shows just how fucked the rental market is.

Where I live it’s 1200 upwards PCM for a 3 bed.

Got to be Barry!

Touristy Warwickshire (Stratford-upon-Avon), cheapest 3 bed semi on Rightmove is £1400 pm currently but there are some 3 beds on for double that, so depends on area/finish etc.

Ihateboris · 02/10/2023 08:03

Chester..average £1500
