Private Rental costs around the country

Floopyfloop · 30/09/2023 08:32

We have lived in private rentals for 25 as we have never managed to purchase.

The cost of rentals in our town absolutely beggars belief! I live in a town that is badly in need of redevelopment.

Using rightmove…. Tell me the nearest town to where you life and the cost to rent a mid quality 3 bedroom family house. (No fancy houses)

I am genuinely intrigued as to what the variance will be.

Also tell me if your town or city is a tourist area or dormitory town for a large city.

Around £1500-£2000, market town in south manchester

Fourcandleforkhandle · 30/09/2023 13:26

Omg I am regretting letting out my 3 bedroom semi-detached house in a nice area of the town here in the NorthWest of England. It has a Drive, Garden and a huge Garage ( practically the size of a House). I Let it out last week for £650...I think I've been had😬

SherbetLemonn · 30/09/2023 13:26

Pretty rural but touristy Devon, £1000 for a 3 bed, altho they’re very few and far between. Bit dated inside but nothing major, small garden and off road parking.

waterlego · 30/09/2023 13:29

I live in a large town on the South coast of England. Properties of this type start at £1400 pcm.

RampantIvy · 30/09/2023 14:23

DD pays £600 pcm for a rather lovely two beroom flat on the north east coast - walking distance from the beach

Siouxtse1 · 30/09/2023 14:35

Area we currently live in £1150 for middling areas, £1250 for good or outstanding schools areas. Nearest large town would be Hereford. We are paying less than this for a bigger home, but the property is fully owned by the landlord, not mortgaged, so mortgage rate rises not affecting landlords affordability. Whenever EPC reforms finally have to be implemented, that will put their costs up because they never seem to budget for repairs/ improvements and always pay over the odds for work done (I often get sent invoices by mistake).
Area we'd like to relocate to is approximately £875-£925 for 3 bedroom places in good/outstanding areas for schooling. Renting here is very competitive.

SummerSazz · 30/09/2023 14:44

How much do you rent your ten BTL's for ?

The ones in and around Tamworth are £850 (3 bedroom), £850 (3 bedroom), £800 (3 bedrooms), 800 (2 bedrooms) £820 (2 bedrooms)I just put a rent increase on the last house. The ones in Hull for £650 (3 bedrooms), £650 (3 bedrooms), £650 (3 bedrooms), £625 (3 bedrooms), and one 3 bedrooms house is having extensive work including a new kitchen and shower put in downstairs cloakroom so I'm not letting that one out ATM. I have a waiting list for my houses in both Tamworth and Hull. In Tamworth I get about 3 enquires a month from word of mouth and I'm not even advertising. I'm in the process of buying another one on Hull too but a 2 bedroom this time.

Town in highlands of Scotland £1000-£1400 - median salary is something like £28k.
airbnb has absolutely wrecked our housing market.

SpaceRaiders · 30/09/2023 21:52

£2000 35 miles from central London (outside M25).

Barleymilk · 30/09/2023 22:17

No two or three beds in my local town of Daventry.
Just one one bed on for £795 and a five bed terrace for £1500.

Harrumphy · 30/09/2023 22:28

£1600 will get you a 3 bed ex council terrace here with no parking. Private developments £2000+. Just outside the M25 in a shitty town in Essex.

A 3 bed ex council 2nd floor flat (no lift) is being advertised for £1300.

Town was built for council housing funnily enough and there is a 10+ years wait on the list for it now. 16 new council houses built in the last 5 years according to a recent newspaper article but thousands of new build houses built on developments on the outskirts of town selling from £400k for a 3 bed terrace.

It’s an absolute disgrace.

DD and her bf recently had to take a 2 bed house for £1500 a month as nothing else available.

Goodornot · 30/09/2023 22:35

Richmond upon Thames about £3000

Towerofsong · 30/09/2023 23:09

Nearest town is Huntingdon, £1350 pcm. Only 4 x 3 bed houses available to rent in the whole town 😳
It's not really a wonderful town, but it's only 30 mins to Cambridge.

TerfTalking · 30/09/2023 23:22

West Yorkshire town on M62 corridor £900-£1100 (terrace to detached)

MrsMoastyToasty · 30/09/2023 23:28

In my local town (midway between Bristol and Bath) has 3 bedroom houses for anything from £700 pcm to £1400. A 4 bed flat above the local Indian restaurant is £1995 and a 2 bed house is £2300. There doesn't seem to be any reason for the huge price differences.

mjf981 · 01/10/2023 04:02

Wow. The UK rental market is well and truly broken. How do average people/earners pay these rents??! Are they all getting universal credit now as well? (I live outside the UK now).

pissyrascal · 01/10/2023 05:10

@mjf981 it is a total mess. The LHA rates which are used to assess how much people could receive as a maximum in housing benefit/universal credit housing costs are not keeping up with rents at all leaving most with a shortfall of hundreds per month, the housing crisis is just going to continue to get worse and worse.
In my area, the outer south east nearish Milton Keynes, the cheapest 3 bed ex council house is £1250 and the LHA rate is £972 per month. You can check the LHA rate via this webpage to see what the difference is via this web page: https://lha-direct.voa.gov.uk/

Search for Local Housing Allowance rates by postcode or local authority : DirectGov - LHA Rates

Rural SE Cornwall will cost about £1200 for a 3 bed. Towards the coast though it was double. There’s usually a wait list for rental as the stock is so low as many are holiday homes or air bnb. Very very rarely are rental properties actual advertised as they usually go before that.

Dibblydoodahdah · 01/10/2023 07:19

Small town 40 miles from London (but not on train line) £1500-2000 for an average 3 bed. The large five bed detached next door to us previously rented at £3500 per month.

countrygirl99 · 01/10/2023 07:23

Bedford. Looked at 3 bed semis. Only 4 listed 3 circa £1400 one at £1200

notanothernana · 01/10/2023 08:52

Isle of Wight. Rental market decimated in last couple of years (huge increase in second home purchases).

Shocked to see only one 3 bed semi on for £1350 a month 😮

Badbadbunny · 01/10/2023 09:04

DS has just had to pay £1000 per month for a tiny one bed flat on the outskirts of York. Prices and shortage is absolutely insane there, you can't even get viewings due to the high demand.
