“Naice” yummy mummy/ Gail’s area london

Hi

I would really appreciate any help!

I’m expecting my second child at the moment and we are having to upsize to a house. I’m really looking for a villagey london urban area that’s “naice”.

Think yummy mummies, coffee shops, Gail’s, Waitrose… bookshops, speciality shops, boutiques etc … basically I’m painting a picture of Richmond/Chiswick. But unfortunately they are out of our price range.

I came across "Askew village” in Shepherd’s Bush- it’s more within our price range- not far from Chiswick…Hammersmith is in close range for independent schools for secondary.

what do you think? Is it up and coming? Or am I being delusional and it’s actually not what I’m expecting.

any advice welcome!

Thank you.

Unfortunately transport is not ideal- no tube stations close by. But both DH and I work from
home- and I have the hope the children could walk to school in Hammersmith

You must be near Goldhawk Road, Ravenscourt Park and Stamford Brook tubes?

ferntwist · 24/09/2023 22:10

Following for the lols. Totally agree that you need to live in a village in Berkshire OP, inner London is not going to work for you

donkra · 24/09/2023 22:13

Everywhere in London has chicken shops. Everywhere in London has a mix of income levels. You can't afford the kind of sanitised whiteness you seem to want. You'll have to either come to terms with it or move out.

Himawarigirl · 24/09/2023 22:15

May Gail’s forever stay away from my beloved corner of London if it’s a harbinger of this kind of ‘naice’ craziness. Don’t think I’ve ever seen the word used so many times in one thread!

Bigbus · 24/09/2023 22:16

Furzedown is definitely up and coming with a real community feel and very close to an excellent secondary school, Graveney.

Balham has a Waitrose and a Gail’s. Also Abbeyville Road in Clapham and Wimbledon Village might meet your criteria but perhaps not the budget. Maybe Putney?

Xenaaa · 24/09/2023 22:16

Yes! But just off askew road.

really hope it’s a good area, just doing some research before making an offer

Streamorwatchlive · 24/09/2023 22:18

Gail’s is shit and overpriced

I’m pretty middle class I love chicken

or are you suggesting certain people frequent chicken shops 🤔

sunshineplayroom · 24/09/2023 22:18

Why did Shepherd’s Bush Market feel unsafe to you? Was there an incident when you visited?

@Chocrock she ran into a Greggs 🙀

Xenaaa · 24/09/2023 22:18

Also…ignoring the racist comments against me…just looking for an up and coming area with decent house prices…nothing to do with diversity.

ppl have placed their own connotations to the word “naice”

Streamorwatchlive · 24/09/2023 22:21

Yeah. Don’t ignore it. Examine it and stop it

StolenCookie · 24/09/2023 22:22

OP, you need to realise that your criteria for a desirable area is coming across as racist despite you not specifically saying “I only want to live near rich white people” (I think if you were being honest you’d probably have said this). Mentioning chicken shops is a racist dog whistle because certain demographics of people tend to frequent them.

NoNeedToHurry · 24/09/2023 21:48

Lol there's a Gail's and a Waitrose in Bromley but I wouldn't call that a "naice" area 😂

Not the point of the thread but... where's the Gail's in Bromley?? How have I missed it?

Pretty sure it was you who had a problem with chicken shops and found Shepherds Bush Market unsafe OP.

Maybe have one of those big thinks, so hard it almost hurts?

DilettanteMum · 24/09/2023 22:24

Askew road is quite nice actually. I think already passed the up and coming phase. Especially depending on the road.

Excellent schools nearby as well.

Xenaaa · 24/09/2023 21:56

Why is everyone saying im racist! I haven’t mentioned race once! I’m just looking for a nice area, with good investment potential in an up and coming area…which hopefully will turn “naice” and we can sell for a profit if we ever sold in future. It’s literally nothing to do with race!

It does come over a bit that you are equating chicken shops with bad, unsafe people, and a Gail’s and Waitrose with decent, safe people. It is true you haven’t mentioned race. But you do project a certain view of ‘class’ which could be deemed unfair/prejudiced?

Xenaaa · 24/09/2023 22:28

I think people are coming off as racist themselves! Why do you think certain demographics frequent chicken shops?? I love chicken myself and go to chicken shops. However it’s not a marker of an up and coming area with investment potential- and these are things I have to think about before pouring my life savings into a family home.

Shepherd’s Bush Market area seemed to be quite littered that’s all- and I did not feel safe…I can’t explain why…it was just a vibe.

Hi OP. It's a decent area to live; I know a
number of people around there with children who have gone to private primaries in Chiswick and Hammersmith as well as the local state schools. Plenty of local facilities- shops and cafes already mentioned plus a library, NHS dentist, Wendell park as well as Ravenscourt.

Streamorwatchlive · 24/09/2023 22:31

I love chicken myself and go to chicken shops.

I’m not a racist my best friend is black.,,.

no certain types of people don’t frequent chicken shops. But it’s a known racist code you’re using.

Trufflethespaniel · 24/09/2023 22:31

Please stop writing "naice". You are making yourself sound like a total wannabe cliché.

Streamorwatchlive · 24/09/2023 22:32

And your now trying to pretend your looking for an investment when a few posts ago it was your forever home and discussing the private schools your kids Could go to

Xenaaa · 24/09/2023 22:32

@Azure

Thank you so much for this. I really feel reassured.

OP posts:
Xenaaa · 24/09/2023 22:33

Well I would like my family home to be an investment too? Hopefully to pass onto the children or sel in future. There’s no shame in that.

Bellabellabelle86 · 24/09/2023 22:38

Marylebone has a Gail's, Waitrose, and Daunt bookshop.

Completely affordable and "naice". Wink

Butterfly898 · 24/09/2023 22:40

I’ve lived in many parts of West London, around Askew Road is ok, I personally find it not great for transport connections. You’d be better off looking at Acton or Ealing. Some really nice parts, well connected on the Elizabeth/central/Piccadilly line and lots of mums/families. Acton is also getting a Gail’s very soon if that’s in your criteria….
Please don’t come here and start describing it as “naice”, though.

Butterfly898 · 24/09/2023 22:43

Oh and we do have chicken shops (fortunately for my DP), sorry
