“Naice” yummy mummy/ Gail’s area london

Hi

I would really appreciate any help!

I’m expecting my second child at the moment and we are having to upsize to a house. I’m really looking for a villagey london urban area that’s “naice”.

Think yummy mummies, coffee shops, Gail’s, Waitrose… bookshops, speciality shops, boutiques etc … basically I’m painting a picture of Richmond/Chiswick. But unfortunately they are out of our price range.

I came across "Askew village” in Shepherd’s Bush- it’s more within our price range- not far from Chiswick…Hammersmith is in close range for independent schools for secondary.

what do you think? Is it up and coming? Or am I being delusional and it’s actually not what I’m expecting.

any advice welcome!

Thank you.

Lived here (half a mile from 'askew village') for 30 years and have never actually heard of Askew 'village' so that's estate agent bullcrap for you there. Is it safe? Well that depends on the hour/day of the week. I'm moving out out. If you live in a nice house/nice street here you are simply a target for the scumbags who live just a street or two away. I would spend your money elsewhere. That said the happy sky bakery is lush!

Herne Hill. Lovely Brockwell Park, lido, we have a Gail’s, lots of delis and family-friendly food pubs, nice farmer’s market, good nurseries, primaries are all outstanding. Reasonable train connections, or walk over to Brixton tube.

The only downside is the secondary schools, which are a bit of a lottery (literally, in one case).

I wish we didn’t have a Gail’s. There are two excellent independent cafes in on the same row of shops that are far better.

Anyone else fancy fried chicken now?

Perfectlystill · 24/09/2023 22:50

Askew Road area is nice and has just got a Gail's which everyone is very excited about.

Nice part of town and well located - go for it.

LongBoi · 24/09/2023 22:51

I live in a friendly residential area in SW London. We had a lovely independent bakery/coffee shop run by a local baker. Then a fucking Gail's opened literally opposite it. So if you want a really 'naice' area, you need to look for places that have Gail's that some locals glare daggers at as they walk past, while the yummies sit outside with their cockerpoos.

In Herne Hill? I’d say at least three! Blackbird, Sesame, and whatever the Sicilian deli is called. Oh, and Perks&White in the station.

Agree Gails didn’t need to open there - the Dulwich Village branch is close enough. Hopefully there is enough coffee traffic to sustain all of them - the queue outside Perks&White every morning is ridiculous.

SleepingisanArt · 24/09/2023 22:53

OP hate to tell you but the word 'naice' doesn't actually exist except in the 'urban dictionary' where it means 'nice but naive' so people can put whatever meaning they like on it, especially in the context of your posts.

Yeah I’d count the Sicilian place as more deli, Perks and White coffee - I meant Sesame and Blackbird.

Im fine with Gail’s in an appropriate location. TBH I hope they fail in Herne Hill.

It’s just a “naice” coffee shop chain. Indicates a “naice” area. Somewhere safe with, you know, yummy mummies etc.

Gail’s is awful - an overpriced Gregg’s.

Bustmybuffer · 24/09/2023 22:58

I don't know with your budget but St Margaret's and parts of Isleworth are nice.

newfriend05 · 24/09/2023 22:58

If you have looked at Queen's Park have you also looked at Kensal rise ? That has its own 'Gail's' .. but what is your price range ? That's key to these sort of areas

MorrisZapp · 24/09/2023 22:59

I only know London as a tourist, but I took a day trip to Chiswick last time I was down, to check out the charity shops and the cool vibe.

It was OK but parts of the main drag were a bit shabby and it appears to be a dual carriageway of sorts. I wanted to eat a sandwich in the sun but had to walk three streets back to get any space at all.

I certainly wouldn't pay daft money to live there.

Bustmybuffer · 24/09/2023 23:00

Although the people in Richmond are your absolute worst for attitude so it would put me off even if I had squillions.

TurquoiseDress · 24/09/2023 23:00

Sounds exactly like Blackheath village!!

bopbey · 24/09/2023 23:00

If you want somewhere naice then it's no longer up & coming?

Lamelie · 24/09/2023 23:03

ChristinaW16 · 24/09/2023 21:56

What's a "Gail's"?! (Northerner)

My hilarious habit is calling posh shops their near name non posh version so Gail’s- Gregg’s GBK- Burger-king
Their sour dough bread is addictive though I spend £10/ week on it for a family of 3

NoSquirrels · 24/09/2023 23:06

Whereabouts do you currently live, OP?

bopbey · 24/09/2023 23:11

Balham has a Waitrose and a Gail’s. Also Abbeyville Road in Clapham and Wimbledon Village might meet your criteria but perhaps not the budget. Maybe Putney?

How are these areas up & coming??

bopbey · 24/09/2023 23:12

Forget trying to make money on your house, not with todays interest rates & hybrid working.

friendlycat · 24/09/2023 23:12

I can suggest lots of suitable areas but without knowing your budget it’s rather pointless.

As you say Richmond and Chiswick are lovely so are Barnes, Ham, Mortlake, East Sheen, Putney Heath, Clapham Common, East Dulwich, DulwichVillage, Hampstead etc.

It’s impossible to give any help without knowing budget.

NewHouseNewMe · 24/09/2023 23:13

What’s your budget @Xenaaa ? Then we can assist..

bopbey · 24/09/2023 23:14

Gail's is completely overrated, people love it because they think it's like getting a posh stamp

friendlycat · 24/09/2023 23:18

Sorry it makes me laugh reading Abbeville Village and Balham and Wimbledon village as possible without a budget. All great but what about the amount of available budget to spend on a property.

You could be talking about anything from £1.25 million upwards. If money’s no object look at Wimbledon Village but if you’re struggling with Richmond and Chiswick these aren’t going to be affordable either.

mondaytosunday · 24/09/2023 23:22

@Bellabellabelle86 Marylebone affordable? Sure if you've got £1m for a two/three bed flat with hefty service charges.
For goodness sakes OP, What. Is. Your. Budget?

Iforgotmyusernameagainandagain · 24/09/2023 23:23

What does ‘naice yummy mummy’ actually mean? This is an honest question. FWIW naice autocorrected to naive.

Just because people can afford to live somewhere and they all have nice hair and nails doesn’t mean they’re kind people who will help you out in a heartbeat. TBH it feels like you’re chasing ‘the cool crowd’.

We live in the most expensive area for our postcode but would have no interest in ‘naice yummy mummies’. Much better to find a kind community you can depend on rather than chasing people who you THINK or aspire to be your equal.

The right people are those who would drop anything to help you, and you don’t find those people by checking out a postcode.
