“Naice” yummy mummy/ Gail’s area london

Hi

I would really appreciate any help!

I’m expecting my second child at the moment and we are having to upsize to a house. I’m really looking for a villagey london urban area that’s “naice”.

Think yummy mummies, coffee shops, Gail’s, Waitrose… bookshops, speciality shops, boutiques etc … basically I’m painting a picture of Richmond/Chiswick. But unfortunately they are out of our price range.

I came across "Askew village” in Shepherd’s Bush- it’s more within our price range- not far from Chiswick…Hammersmith is in close range for independent schools for secondary.

what do you think? Is it up and coming? Or am I being delusional and it’s actually not what I’m expecting.

any advice welcome!

Thank you.

What's a "Gail's"?! (Northerner)

It will be fine OP. It’s a perfectly nice area.

But is it “naice”?

@HipHipWhoRay oh amazing! So glad to hear! Is it safe? Please could you tell me of which schools are good? I saw the Shepherd’s Bush Market area which seems very busy and bustling and felt a bit unsafe…is askew completely different?

I honestly don't think you should live in London OP.

You'll be a nervous wreck! You need a quiet village somewhere.

sunshineplayroom · 24/09/2023 21:56

Maybe you'd be better off looking at rural middle England, OP.

Less chicken shops and 'undesireables'..

Xenaaa · 24/09/2023 21:56

Why is everyone saying im racist! I haven’t mentioned race once! I’m just looking for a nice area, with good investment potential in an up and coming area…which hopefully will turn “naice” and we can sell for a profit if we ever sold in future. It’s literally nothing to do with race!

Herne Hill. Lovely Brockwell Park, lido, we have a Gail’s, lots of delis and family-friendly food pubs, nice farmer’s market, good nurseries, primaries are all outstanding. Reasonable train connections, or walk over to Brixton tube.

The only downside is the secondary schools, which are a bit of a lottery (literally, in one case).

This made me smile. I’m long gone from any part of London now, but when we lived in Herne Hill (looong ago) it was cheap, decrepit and crime-ridden. We chose it because it was cheap, but left again after DH was mugged at knifepoint in early evening on Rosendale Road. I’m glad it’s gone up in the world!

A mediocre bakery chain.

sunshineplayroom · 24/09/2023 21:57

@ChristinaW16 a poncey bakery.

It’s just a “naice” coffee shop chain. Indicates a “naice” area. Somewhere safe with, you know, yummy mummies etc.

jolaylasofia · 24/09/2023 21:58

wtf is naice??

You keep describing diverse areas as 'not safe'.

HolyMolyRolyPolyGoodForTheSouly · 24/09/2023 21:59

God, I haven’t heard the term ‘yummy mummies’ in years. Makes me heave.

Sounds like you want a champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget OP!

sunshineplayroom · 24/09/2023 21:59

I'm sensing hairy hands at work here.

Surely no one is really this sappy and clueless..?

Ireolu · 24/09/2023 22:00

We were in Central London today. New chain of shops (to me anyways) called 'chicken shop' one on Baker Street and the other on Camden High Road. Don't think you could get more central and 'naicer' than these locations.

jolaylasofia · 24/09/2023 21:58

wtf is naice??

Nice, but pronounced with a tinkly laugh.

It’s both a self-mocking and utterly humourless way to say “a certain type of middle class.”

Me too. Surely this is not real?!

PamFritters · 24/09/2023 22:01

Is Gail’s a MC signifier now? Fucking hell. Ours is new and it’s bland, overpriced and shit.

NuffSaidSam · 24/09/2023 22:01

jolaylasofia · 24/09/2023 21:58

wtf is naice??

It's means 'posh' aka 'white and middle class'.

jolaylasofia · 24/09/2023 22:02

@Sleepygrumpyandnothappy it's annoying af

Doggymummar · 24/09/2023 22:03

Funny how you keep evading the budget question OP. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Chocrock · 24/09/2023 22:03

Why did Shepherd’s Bush Market feel unsafe to you? Was there an incident when you visited?

Saschka · 24/09/2023 22:05

ChristinaW16 · 24/09/2023 21:56

What's a "Gail's"?! (Northerner)

Expensive chain bakery. It does have nice cakes and sandwiches, but not somewhere you’d buy your lunch every day unless you are loaded.

mrwalkensir · 24/09/2023 22:05

you want to check the flood risk maps - decide if Askew is worth the risk

Have a look on Rightmove! Three bedroom ex-council houses go for a million quid, period properties are £1.5m and up…. I’ve also lived locally for twenty years, it is very very different now.

This thread is far more entertaining than it has any right to be. 🤣
