Need a house name

Needahousename · 21/08/2022 16:41

We’re soon going to need a name for our plot of land where our house will eventually be built and need some ideas.

We are in a small village where all the houses have names and the road that runs through the village does not have a name so couldn’t give the house a number even if we wanted to.

Is there a river/stream/tree/plant on or near the plot? I would start with that.

SundayTeatime · 21/08/2022 17:14

Looking at old maps of the area can give good ideas

PumpkinClementina · 21/08/2022 17:48

What's your favorite flower/plant? Or river, birds, colour. Add House or Cottage on the end.

Mix you and your partner/child's names?

TitInATrance · 21/08/2022 18:50

Pinch something unique from the baby names board? Humphrella, Khushi?

I quite fancy ‘Dragons Nest’ or ‘Cats Cradle’.

Cornettoninja · 21/08/2022 18:51

Stan.

what’s the local history like? Any inspiration from there?

Suzy14837 · 21/08/2022 18:54

Who owned the land before? Has there every been a building on it before? What was the name of the field (all fields have names if you look on an old enough map). Go with something like that rather than a random generic name picked out of thin air, I beg you!

There is a tarn very close but so many of the houses nearby already use tarn in the name it would be impossible to find a new one unfortunately.
Other than that it’s on a very empty plot bar conifers and we don’t like them so they will go at some point (we’ll plant something more fitting in their place). We’re among fields so had considered ‘Field View’ or something.

There have been some corkers on the baby name section recently! I would like to avoid anything too out there!

I will have a look at some old maps, see if inspiration hits!

I’d definitely avoid anything like the other houses have. Three houses near me have similar names and it’s a real pita.

Needahousename · 21/08/2022 19:29

We had a business on the land for a number of years which does not lend itself to house naming unfortunately. Prior to that it was a field I think, about 20-30 years ago.

I know, I really want to avoid that! But anything inspiring in the area has already inspired several house names so we’re really struggling.

Tried that and it doesn’t work at all sadly.

Quercus, it’s the Latin name for Oak. Bonus points if you have an oak tree or one visible from the plot.

WithRosesAroundTheDoor · 21/08/2022 19:43

Could you give us an idea of where it is so that we can look for inspiration?

Also, what kind of house are you building?

Halfarsedjingler · 21/08/2022 19:47

As someone who has to find houses in streets/villages full of houses with names I would call it "wewishithadanumbertoo" 🤣

No sensible suggestions though sorry.

Sunbird24 · 21/08/2022 19:49

It’s forever going to be referred to by everyone else as ‘the new house’ anyway, maybe play on that somehow?

blitzen · 21/08/2022 19:50

Name of your hometown/river plus House or Holme etc. Eg Tyne Holme, Newcastle House

Or name of your favourite hotel eg Belle Vue

TattoedLady · 21/08/2022 20:06

Glebe House, Croft Cottage...something that speaks to the plots former life as a working field?

Cervinia · 21/08/2022 20:44

Set up a wildlife camera, see who the most frequent visitors are. Mouse House, Badger Gate, Frog Farm, Blackbird’s Nest, The Burrow, Hedgehog Croft.

Is it obvious I love wildlife…

Dilbertian · 21/08/2022 20:54

If the road has no house numbers, give your house one! Your birth year, or wedding year, or a number you like, written in words. Or in digits if it's long.

Seventy Two
Oh Eight
1966

dudsville · 21/08/2022 20:58

Could you plant a tree out front and name the house after that "oak cottage", "elm tree house", "wisteria cottage" "rose house"?

nokitchen · 21/08/2022 21:13

Anything but Rose Cottage

dementedma · 21/08/2022 21:14

Plant a rowan. These have long been considered sacred and offer protection to dwellings. Then call it Rowan Cottage
