Need a house name

Needahousename · 21/08/2022 16:41

We’re soon going to need a name for our plot of land where our house will eventually be built and need some ideas.

We are in a small village where all the houses have names and the road that runs through the village does not have a name so couldn’t give the house a number even if we wanted to.

Mama Mia fans? The Old Goathouse.

Tarn-ish.

Field House.

Not enough information on what is around to help you really.

Have a relative who has a Chanticleer. If you ignore the Chaucer ref it's very pretty.
Rivendell for an Elvish vibe.

Border Cottage

custardbear · 22/08/2022 04:59

I saw one in the Netherlands called 'Divorce Mancave' 😂

I'd pick something unusual personally, Midnight Cottage or similar, different but nice

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 22/08/2022 05:17

Taking from your update, what about 'Cornerstones' ? Feels solid, stable and reflects the look of your house?
otherwise I like the idea of planting a particular type of tree or different Gaelic words for field.,.. are there any Cumbrian words for field?

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 22/08/2022 05:29

Another idea (which would need checking with locals) is to pick some words or phrases of Cumbrian dialect... so...

Assa Marra (the name of Cumbrian dialect, partially meaning mate I think)
or Yam means home
and if you look up 'Cumbrian sheep counting numerals' each district had its own words for numbers...

Dormer view house
Dormer feilds view
New fields cottage
I saw one the other called views house.sounded funny but somehow fit and looked good on signage.

KilaJumana · 22/08/2022 07:26

Pick something easy to say over the phone so the person on the other end can have a decent attempt at spelling it.

CrapBucket · 22/08/2022 07:32

If no one else has a number or street name can you be 1 Main Street - no reason you can't be the first?!

Bourbanbiscuit · 22/08/2022 07:50

The Meadows
Beck House

A name is so much nicer than a number, unless your the postman x

SuperCamp · 22/08/2022 08:06

Lots of Cumbrian words that refer to place: Garth (field), How / Howe , Rigg, etc

Yam Garth (home field)

I love Yam Garth (If it hasn't already been used locally!)

One of the houses near us was recently renamed to 'Crock of Gold'. I don't recommend it as people with minds like mine tend to autofill this as 'crock of shit'.

My parents named their new build after the place where they met. So something like 'Lechlade Cottage'.

blitzen · 22/08/2022 11:03

Cumberland Cottage

Moonface123 · 22/08/2022 11:14

Wits End would be my choice.

The road is not named though? We can’t name the road?

The Field house !

BarbaraofSeville · 22/08/2022 19:36

The New House

Half the locals will probably call it that for the next few decades anyway.

J0y · 22/08/2022 19:36

Lol at "divorcé mancave"
😅

Needahousename · 22/08/2022 19:39

Loads to go on thank you all! I really like some will put them to the family.

It really is in keeping with the village and also larger area to have a house name.

I know it’s a pain for delivery drivers, I have been a driver in the area so know what it’s likes to have a day when you only look for named houses! I didn’t find it too bad as long as the signage was good! Same goes for the numbers, it wasn’t always easier to find a number on a street if they didn’t have it visible!

The Steadings? The outbuildings of a farm - could work if you’re going for a traditional build
