Need a house name

Needahousename · 21/08/2022 16:41

We’re soon going to need a name for our plot of land where our house will eventually be built and need some ideas.

We are in a small village where all the houses have names and the road that runs through the village does not have a name so couldn’t give the house a number even if we wanted to.

It's a jubilee year so if you're a royal lover you could have jubilee house/cottage.

Rina66 · 21/08/2022 21:21

What does 'what 3 words' throw up, anything you could use?

Came to suggest that!

I once walked past a cottage called Ersanmyne (not sure on spelling) which I thought was clever when I worked it out and made me smile. (Her and mine)

Sprig1 · 21/08/2022 22:41

Roughly where in the country is it? What kind of house are you planning to build?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/08/2022 22:42

I live olive trees so I'd plant an olive tree in the garden and call it Olive / Olive House / Olive Tree etc.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/08/2022 22:43

Or I'd go literary.do you have a favourite book?

lighterthenordinarychocolate · 21/08/2022 22:52

Animals?
Stag cottage, badger cottage,

Or something generic like Sky/lake/lakeside/hill cottage

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/08/2022 23:02

Rockhopper House

NancyDrooo · 21/08/2022 23:19

Be aware you have to submit your name choice to your local council who can refuse it if there are too many others with similar names in the same area. My friend had a trouble naming her new build and ended up with her fourth choice as the others weren’t allowed.

Like 2022, 2 little ducks 🦆 🦆

Field View sounds a bit dull while you're trying to find a name but nobody is going to think jayzuss how did they come up with that!

How many fields are there?

This is tough with nothing to go on!

For some reason, I feel like Five Fields is a bit more memorable than Field view. The alliteration perhaps.

Trying to think of another word for location to put after it

Five Fields Point
Five Fields Place

How near Scotland are you!? Could you squeeze in a bit of gaelic. So many of these place names that sound good just mean big hill, eg Ard Mor.

I think there are thirty Gaelic words for field. I will find that list. Maybe one of those might sound good.

Wardrobemalfunction22 · 21/08/2022 23:29

Something that makes it easy to find and matches the colour of the house e.g. Red Barn, Lilac Cottage, Green Gables, Violet Lodge.

Lots of Victorian villas near me have names of islands e.g. Lindisfarne, Arran so that was maybe was a popular choice when they were built. I also see direction type names a lot e.g. Westholme, Easter Brook Farm, North Hill Cottage.

Needahousename · 21/08/2022 23:29

Thanks everyone, lots to mull through there!

What 3 words is an interesting option, I’ll take a look.

We’re in Cumbria and we’ll be building a dormer bungalow in keeping with local style but up to date. So a mixture of white render, stone cornerstones and stone window surrounds.

Our house is named after a Stately home (inherited the name)- I'd avoid that kind of thing as we find it embarrassingly pretentious. The house is nowhere grand enough to pull that one off.

There are houses local to us called "the neuk" and "the gables", both of which I like. Will your new house have a feature you could reference?

Otherwise I like the idea of naming it after a tree and then planting one or more in the garden rowan/cherry/apple/beech/birch/willow etc could all be lovely names.

We’re really close to the border!

The High Chapparal.

DH has always wanted us to do this, but I have stood firm. He’d be so chuffed if someone else went for it.

Crumpleton · 21/08/2022 23:37

NOTARN. 😜

gulliblestravels · 21/08/2022 23:41

Dormer House. Simple.

J0y · 21/08/2022 23:41

I think Bawn is a welsh word for field. I like that.
Lea is another word that basically means field.

J0y · 21/08/2022 23:45

Oh wow! are you close to the border @Needahousename then you absolutely have to order a book on amazon called 32 words for field. it's Irish not gaelic but you'll be familiar with spelling and you could anglicise a bit anyway.

There are different words for cattle field, field for corn, field for dancing That's my favourite!

it won't let me read the other 28

Squashedraddish · 21/08/2022 23:46

The welsh for field is maes.

welsh for home is cartref. Which is nice but random if you have no welsh connections. Do you have connections to any other countries/languages that you could use?

Craftybodger · 21/08/2022 23:48

We were in a similar situation. No road name, no village, postal address is misleading - directing people to a hamlet nearly a mile away. We went with a local landmark and added ‘House’, it works and helps people find it.

Do you have a favourite tree? Could you plant them roadside after the build an use it as the house name?

Sooverthisnow · 21/08/2022 23:55

Please don’t use a mix up of names/ initials/ pets names- it’s seriously tacky and a nightmare if you ever want to sell.

J0y · 22/08/2022 00:07

Braes of Rannoch

I'm too in to this project now. I need to sleep. My house has a number! :-(
