Need a house name

Needahousename · 21/08/2022 16:41

We’re soon going to need a name for our plot of land where our house will eventually be built and need some ideas.

We are in a small village where all the houses have names and the road that runs through the village does not have a name so couldn’t give the house a number even if we wanted to.

Mix you and your partner/child's names?

Do you get your own post code or Google Maps pin (I think you can put these on yourself?) or do all the delivery drivers need to remember that The Smiths live opposite the Post Office, The Jones by the bus stop and the Greens on the corner just as you enter the village?

I’ve changed usernames in case I’m recognised……

We live in Scotland (near the borders) and our house name has been admired - Ellangowan.

It’s an old Victorian manse. I think there are only a few Ellangowans in existence.

Hadley means Heather Field.
Hadley House?

My favourite out of all the suggestions is
The Meadows
Or something like Meadow View or Meadow Way

KittyCatsby · 22/08/2022 21:47

Can you see a church or near one ? If so , and you say you are on the borders , Kirk House , Kirk View ,Kirk Holme etc ( Kirk meaning = church )
Or if your field held livestock , then the breed name of the animal so for example ( sheep ) Swaledale House , cows - Highland View ?

Finally! I was only reading this thread looking for this suggestion 👏

wellhelloitsme · 22/08/2022 22:06

Do you have a favourite book? I would choose a place name or other word followed by 'house'.

SE13Mummy · 22/08/2022 22:11

Are there other bungalows? If not, call it The Bungalow. I once lived in a cottage which was called The Cottage.

Field View sounds a bit dull while you're trying to find a name but nobody is going to think jayzuss how did they come up with that!

How many fields are there?

This is tough with nothing to go on!

For some reason, I feel like Five Fields is a bit more memorable than Field view. The alliteration perhaps.

Trying to think of another word for location to put after it

Five Fields Point
Five Fields Place

How near Scotland are you!? Could you squeeze in a bit of gaelic. So many of these place names that sound good just mean big hill, eg Ard Mor.

I think there are thirty Gaelic words for field. I will find that list. Maybe one of those might sound good.

I like Five Fields Point! I bet there isn't another one in the whole country.

Suzy14837 · 22/08/2022 22:14

..... although it might cause more confusion than it's worth - the Post Office / Local Authority might veto it (visitors looking for a no.5 in a street called Fields Point)

What does 'what 3 words' throw up, anything you could use?

I like this idea.... [heads off to look at own house!]

YesitsBess · 22/08/2022 22:18

@MaudDeBohun you are welcome.

I also favour ‘Dunfartin’ but I am a massive child who ought not to be allowed to name anything. My old chickens were named things such as Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret & Hanky Bannister….

Actually, Hanky Bannister is a great name for a house.

BluePassportsAreBollocks · 22/08/2022 22:18

We’ve done this!!

We chose to name our house after where we got married. It also fitted the area quite well as it is woodland themed in our case.

For example, if you got married at Stoke Park you could call it Stoke House. Sopley Mill could be Sopley Place. Newton Hall could be Newton Field. Hengrave Hall could just be Hengrave (poor chickens…)

You get the picture!

It’s forever going to be referred to by everyone else as ‘the new house’ anyway, maybe play on that somehow?

Funny you should say that, my friend lived in "New House" and my mum lived in "New Place".

Or morph your names- there were two houses where I grew up called "Hilfred" and "Brijill" 😁

friskybivalves · 22/08/2022 22:32

Herdwick Cottage? I love those sheep. Just the best. Bonus points if you can actually see any...or even Herdwick House.

IaltagDhubh · 22/08/2022 22:32

Garth Brook - if there’s a stream or brook anywhere near
Glen Close - there must be a glen somewhere nearish
