Argument with DH. Is your draining board to the left or right of the sink?

Discussing layout of new kitchen.

DH says the space would work better if the draining board was on the left of the sink. I say the draining board is always on the right of the sink and I would feel weird washing up if it was on the left.

Who's right?

Right. I think much depends on whether you're left or right handed

ShortLass · 14/06/2017 13:44

It feels much more natural on the right for me.

But the way the kitchen is set out, the sink is on the right of centre, so it makes sense for the draining board to be on the left. I don't like it like that, but it would look wrong on the other side as it would be very much on one side of the window.

buntingqueen · 14/06/2017 13:50

On the left definitely seems correct to me (right handed), but we now have it on the right due to the layout of the kitchen and I am very used to it now, and it seems normal.

BubblesBuddy · 14/06/2017 13:52

If you have room for a draining board, get a double sink!!! This is way more useful and draining is in the second sink with a wire basket. Positioning a draining board, if you must have one, should be where a second person can reach it. So not in a corner or in a tight space. Think about how people move around the kitchen and where crockery and pans are stored. Left or right does not matter as long as it can be used by a second person.

MikeUniformMike · 14/06/2017 13:59

Mine is on the right, but friends have it on the left.
Why don't you get a sink with a draining board either side?

delilahbucket · 14/06/2017 13:59

Ours is on the right. Out of 15 houses I can recall (not just ones I have lived in), only two have it on the left.

SingaporeSlander · 14/06/2017 14:17

So weird! Everywhere I ever lived (7 or 8 houses) it has been on the right.

AceholeRimmer · 14/06/2017 14:19

Ours is on the left, which feels right (Grin) to me.

PracticalTacticalBrilliance · 14/06/2017 15:56

I think it depends on what you're used to. My parents one has always been on the left and so was ours in our flat. When we moved house it was on the right and I just found it so incredibly awkward to use. So when we changed the kitchen I got a universal sink so the drainer could be on the left.

SquidgeyMidgey · 14/06/2017 18:40

Left, had to be because of the proximity of elec installations. We rarely wash up but it's not something I've ever thought about tbh.

MiniMum97 · 14/06/2017 18:48

Always been on the left in every house I've ever lived in. Would be weird on the right to me.

cushioncovers · 14/06/2017 18:53

It's on the left and I'm left handed so it's good for me

Eggandchipsfortea93 · 14/06/2017 18:55

I have had both, in different houses (currently right). I haven't really minded which...I guess I can feel proud of how adaptable and easy going I've been, coping with both options Grin

yomellamoHelly · 14/06/2017 19:30

To the right. Suited the layout better.

TheRealKimmySchmidt63 · 14/06/2017 22:50

Mines on the right and it feels right I know others on the left and it feels awkward

OnePlanOnHouzz · 15/06/2017 07:59

Try undermount or inset bowl ( or bowls ) with no drainer - then use drainer mats which ever side suits the person washing up ! That way you are both happy and the worktop can be used as worktop right up to the edge of the bowl - if you have drainer grooves that part can only ever be used as a drainer - so it's a waste of resources if it's a small or medium sized kitchen !

( advice offered in my experience as a kitchen designer who helps defuse this kind of disagreement between couples for over 30 years ! )

LarrytheCucumber · 15/06/2017 08:03

Kitchen sink (here when we moved in) is on the right, utility sink (which we had put in) is on the left. Both work for me.

PonderLand · 15/06/2017 14:18

Left and I've lived in 3 other houses that have all been on the left too!? I've never thought about it before but I think I'd always choose the left as that's what I'm used to.

NotMeNoNo · 15/06/2017 15:01

I'd put it on the side furthest from hob and towards crockery storage, then stacked drying doesn't get in the way. So it depends on layout.
