Argument with DH. Is your draining board to the left or right of the sink?

Discussing layout of new kitchen.

DH says the space would work better if the draining board was on the left of the sink. I say the draining board is always on the right of the sink and I would feel weird washing up if it was on the left.

Who's right?

Right here, but growing up we had a double drainer and used the one on the left for putting dishes to drain; the right one was used for dishes waiting to be washed.

StarryCorpulentCunt · 13/06/2017 22:03

Left.

DarkFloodRises · 13/06/2017 22:05

Have shown this thread to DH. He is looking smug.

Both sides. I use the right one the most. I am right-handed.

MissPollyPops · 13/06/2017 22:09

Mines is on the right. I'm right handed. Do dishes in big sink which is on the right. Rinse, put in rack.

TisGlorious · 13/06/2017 22:09

Left.

MadeForThis · 13/06/2017 22:09

Right. Have never seen one to the left in any house myself, friends or family have lived in. So that's a lot!!

wisteriainbloom · 13/06/2017 22:10

Mine is on the left.

keeplooking · 13/06/2017 22:10

Left

PerspicaciaTick · 13/06/2017 22:11

Mine is on the left (I'm right-handed). My parents' is on the right. I find that I have to awkwardly reach across myself when I wash up at their house - as I reach for the dirty stuff on the left.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/06/2017 22:11

Both here but only the left gets used, my parents are left as well

KoalaDownUnder · 13/06/2017 22:12

Right!

All of the ones I can recall - including my own - are on the right. We're in Australia.

Ditto, SuperBeagle

It feels normal to 'process' things from left to right, not from right to left. That's how we write, etc.

And you really don't have to do any fancy hand-swapsies to transfer the plate to the right hand and put in the drainer (or maybe I'm super dexterous Wink)

Anyway, my sink is something like this pic (but with bigger sinky bits). So you choose where to put the drainer.

Just use your left hand? ConfusedSmile. It's just swiping stuff into a sink, it doesn't really require fine motor skills.

PickAChew · 13/06/2017 22:16

Depends on the kitchen. Ours was on the left, when we moved in, meaning that we had a load of dead space to the right that I couldn't really make much use of, plus a lack of useful space to the left. We changed the worktops and installed a new sink and moved it to the right, where the drainer is out of the way, leaving a useful chunk of worktop to the left of the sink.

5OBalesofHay · 13/06/2017 22:16

Right in the kitchen left in the scullery

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 13/06/2017 22:17

Right. Not sure it matters!?

littlemissneela · 13/06/2017 22:17

Ours is on the right which is wrong; it should be on the left. This is prob because our previous place had the drainer on the left. Our next one will have the drainer on the correct (left) side as it will be a corner sink and thats the only way it will fit in the kitchen refurb Grin

Patriciathestripper1 · 13/06/2017 22:17

Mines on right I did have a left one and changed it caus it felt all wrong.

MrsMooks · 13/06/2017 22:18

Right

PerspicaciaTick · 13/06/2017 22:19

But I prefer to pick heavy things up in my right-hand, it's part of being right-handed and feels more secure. Not sure why that has offended you Confused.

TheHobbitMum · 13/06/2017 22:20

Mines right, inlaws left 😂

KoalaDownUnder · 13/06/2017 22:20

Oh god. It hasn't 'offended' me - hence the smiley face.

Mumsnet is fucking exhausting sometimes.

minnymoobear · 13/06/2017 22:21

Ours just been fitted is to the right -starting to feel that's wrong now!

Nan0second · 13/06/2017 22:21

We just had our kitchen done and had draining slopes put into the quartz worktop on both sides!
Means that when there's a lot of pans to drain, there is plenty of room.
We also have a 1.5 sink :)

ShatnersBassoon · 13/06/2017 22:22

The one in the kitchen is on the left. In the utility room, it's on the right.

I'm no bloody help Grin
