Argument with DH. Is your draining board to the left or right of the sink?

Discussing layout of new kitchen.

DH says the space would work better if the draining board was on the left of the sink. I say the draining board is always on the right of the sink and I would feel weird washing up if it was on the left.

Who's right?

I'm right handed but mines on the left and I've never seen a sink where it's on the right!

AlternativeTentacle · 14/06/2017 06:55

What I would say though is the person that does most of the washing up and food prep is the one to decide, if you are having arguments about it.

SunsetBeetch · 14/06/2017 06:57

Right. I've never seen a draining board on the left hand side. I agree that's odd, OP Grin

HoneyDragon · 14/06/2017 07:00

I have two sinks

The double sink (one big one mini) has the draining board to the right.

This is good as the mini sink is to the right so you can wash, rinse, stack in one go.

The other sink is a single sink and the draining board is to the left and is as equally comfortable to use.

FetchezLaVache · 14/06/2017 07:04

Mine's on the right, as is DP's and DSis's.

Parents' house had a draining board to either side of the sink (but we always used the right-hand side one for actual draining purposes) - perhaps, for the sake of domestic harmony, you could consider that solution, OP? :)

P1nkP0ppy · 14/06/2017 07:08

Mine's on the right, my parents' is left. I had a double drainer years ago but you can't get them now.

ToothFairiesHaveNoChange · 14/06/2017 07:15

Left. Tiny gallery kitchen so it tucks nicely in the corner.

HotelEuphoria · 14/06/2017 07:15

Mine is on the right! But that is because of the layout of the kitchen and window, it works better than way. If it was the other way I wouldn't have an even allocation of worktop or would look through the middle of a mullion when looking out.

PotteringAlong · 14/06/2017 07:16

Ours is on the left.

sashh · 14/06/2017 07:17

I have lived with both and more commonly 2 draining boards.

I NEED it to be o the right, dirty dishes stack on the left, are washed then put on the right to dry.

Took me 2 years to train my carer that dirty dishes do not go on the draining board.

Chasingsquirrels · 14/06/2017 07:21

Mine - left
Utility - left
Previous house - right
Parent - right
Utility - right
Previous house - left
Friend - left
Friend - right
Work - left

Oblomov17 · 14/06/2017 07:23

Left. And that is natural. May not be if you are left handed obviously. But traditionally it is left hand.

Sorry. But you are wrong and Dh is right on this occasion!

Faithless12 · 14/06/2017 07:26

Most houses I've been in have it on the right, however two of my friends have it on the left and it feels wrong.

beingsunny · 14/06/2017 07:30

Mines on a the right, but I am down under Hmm

Rufffles · 14/06/2017 07:46

Left. I can't remember ever living in a house with it on the right, although I've never ever thought about it until 30 seconds ago!

EpoxyResin · 14/06/2017 08:11

Mine's on the right, and I also couldn't conscience it being on the left!

I understand the "dominant hand" arguments but for be it's about the direction of process - left to right. You read (in our culture) from left to right; if you were to draw a flowchart the arrows would invariably go from left to right; things travel in a process from left to right.

My brain would explode if I had to have one on the right: wrong, wrong, wrong!

EpoxyResin · 14/06/2017 08:12

*I mean the LEFT, brain would explode if it were on the left!

Notreallyarsed · 14/06/2017 08:17

Every house I've lived in, it's been on the right which always felt awkward to me (I'm a leftie) so when I designed the layout of my new kitchen 6 years ago I asked for it to be on the left. Mind you they also dropped the worktops and cupboards up top a few inches as I'm a short arse. Didn't know DP then, it drives him nuts as he keeps hitting his head on the extractor above the hob because he's over 6ft Grin

ScarletSienna · 14/06/2017 08:20

I've never seen one on the left and think I'm going to be looking now in every house! I assumed they were only made that way! Both of ours are on the right and all previous places I've lived have been on the right, including abroad.

RoseVase2010 · 14/06/2017 08:22

On the left and I'm right handed.

Parents is also on the left.

cheesypastatonight · 14/06/2017 08:24

Mine is on the right, my parents too. I thought most were but obviously not!

allegretto · 14/06/2017 08:29

Right in our current flat, left in the old one!

BaliBound · 14/06/2017 08:35

Left at home, right at work. Right feels wrong! I'm right handed.

LBOCS2 · 14/06/2017 08:36

Right.

We're both lefties, so it works for us.

chloesmumtoo · 14/06/2017 08:44

On the left here and I like it that way
Right handed
