Argument with DH. Is your draining board to the left or right of the sink?

Discussing layout of new kitchen.

DH says the space would work better if the draining board was on the left of the sink. I say the draining board is always on the right of the sink and I would feel weird washing up if it was on the left.

Who's right?

Mine is on the right, and has been in the two previous houses. My parents' old house had it on the left and I don't remember it being particularly awkward. I think you just get used to it very quickly either way.

LimitedSedition · 13/06/2017 21:43

On the right in this house, everywhere else I've lived, it's been on the left.

May50 · 13/06/2017 21:43

Mine is on the right.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 13/06/2017 21:44

Left. Makes sense if your dominant hand is right.

akkakk · 13/06/2017 21:44

I don't have a draining board, but do have two large sinks, one of which is used for draining so left and right-handed people can use the sink they prefer... and then a dishwasher

Doje · 13/06/2017 21:45

Ours is on the right and it works for me. However.... Mostly, the right hand is the dominant hand, so the cleaning implement would be in that hand. Hold item with the left hand, clean with the right, so makes sense to use your left hand to put it on the drainer - on the left hand side! Unless you want to put down the cloth/sponge/brush or lean over with the left.

I'm genuinely shocked that our drainer is on the wrong side!

HundredMilesAnHour · 13/06/2017 21:47

Mine is on the right, and has been on the right everywhere I've ever lived (which is quite a lot of places!). On the left is just weird....

Eolian · 13/06/2017 21:48

Left. I can't see that it makes much difference tbh.

EmmaC78 · 13/06/2017 21:49

Mine is on the left.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 13/06/2017 21:51

Ours is on the left. My mum's is on the right.

GraceGrape · 13/06/2017 21:51

On the right. Was on the right in my old house too. My parents' one is also on the right.

Iamcheeseman · 13/06/2017 21:52

Ours is right.

Last place was right.
Grandparents is right.
Mum's is left and she's the only left handed one of us.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/06/2017 21:52

Left.

SuperBeagle · 13/06/2017 21:53

All of the ones I can recall - including my own - are on the right. We're in Australia.

wonkylegs · 13/06/2017 21:54

Ours is on the left because that's what works best with the layout of our kitchen, we are both right handed and we have no problems with it. It's been in 3 years

In our old house, the kitchen which we had for 10yrs it was on the right, it worked with the layout and again we had no problems

I suspect you just get used to it.

ExcuseMyEyebrows · 13/06/2017 21:55

Mine is on the left because I'm right handed.

I had a drainer on the right in one kitchen and found it so awkward leaning over to the right to put dishes on it.

magicstar1 · 13/06/2017 21:57

Mines on the left...I can use the spray tap with my right hand, so it suits me

Mum2jenny · 13/06/2017 21:58

Mine is on the left, my mums is on the right. Doesn't really matter to me though.

Amammi · 13/06/2017 21:59

Left on our house DH right handed me left handed works for us both

Phalarope · 13/06/2017 21:59

Surely less about left- or right-handed, and more about how the sink is positioned in your kitchen - you don't want clean draining board things immediately next to eg food prep area.

bambisims · 13/06/2017 21:59

Left....sorry. We have a dish washer so don't actually wash up or use it Smile

GuntyMcGee · 13/06/2017 22:00

Ours is on the right.

It was on the left, but when we re-did the kitchen, turned it around because it felt wrong, there was more space for it the other side as we have unused space behind the kitchen door and we have a better view out of the window from the sink with it on the right.

Also, we're right handed so dirty plates stack on worktop on the left ready to be washed, they're held under water with left hand, scrubbed and rinsed with right hand, then placed on drainer on the right.

bambisims · 13/06/2017 22:01

Sorry dh just corrected me I'm crap with left and right...it's on the right after all !

ColourfulOrangex · 13/06/2017 22:02

Mine is on the left

Dawnedlightly · 13/06/2017 22:02
